Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other symbol has more resonance in African American history than that of "40 acres and a mule"—the lost promise of Black reparations for slavery after the Civil War. In I've Been Here All the While, we meet the Black people who actually received this mythic 40 acres, the American settlers who coveted this land, and the Native Americans whose holdings it originated from. In nineteenth-century Indian Territory (modern-day Oklahoma), a story unfolds that ties African American and Native American history tightly together, revealing a western theatre of Civil War and Reconstruction, in which Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole Indians, their Black slaves, and African Americans and whites from the eastern United States fought military and rhetorical battles to lay claim to land that had been taken from others. Through chapters that chart cycles of dispossession, land seizure, and settlement in Indian Territory, Alaina E. Roberts draws on archival research and family history to upend the traditional story of Reconstruction. She connects debates about Black freedom and Native American citizenship to westward expansion onto Native land. As Black, white, and Native people constructed ideas of race, belonging, and national identity, this part of the West became, for a short time, the last place where Black people could escape Jim Crow, finding land and exercising political rights, until Oklahoma statehood in 1907.

Book excerpt: Life for a teenaged girl in the western territory of Wyoming in the 1890’s is filled with change. Alaina Marie is torn between the simple life she has grown to love, assisting her father in running a large cattle and horse breeding operation, and assisting her mother, an attorney at law, with a complicated legal case she obligated herself to in San Francisco, California. Little did Alaina know when she boarded the train with her best friend Badger, a grulla stallion, that neither of them would ever reach California. Tragedy along the way would require her to call on the training her father had instilled in her from the time she was a child, exhibit courage she never knew she had, and challenge her to push herself to do the impossible. Somewhere along the way, she became a woman—a woman with a deep sense of right and wrong and a commitment to do everything in her power to make Wyoming Territory a better place to live...even if it cost her life. The amazing adventure of a seventeen-year-old girl traveling hundreds of miles on horseback through the dead of winter, while attempting to avoid a team of murderous men, will keep you riveted to every page.

Book excerpt: The Persephone Theory By: Namir Thompson The Persephone Theory is one of the most interesting stories to read and by far one of the best books to mix comedy with horror and history. The Persephone Theory begins with the Greek myth coming to life as the goddess of harvest and fertility, Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is taken by her uncle Hades to live in the underworld to become its queen, but is allowed to live amongst the humans possessing the one called Persephone. This Persephone is argent to those who love and hate her, and make all who stand in her way pay with their own blood. Persephone, mad at existence, leaves her children behind to face their own demands and are granted everlasting life. The children of Persephone roam on Earth, daring any and everything to stop them or die trying. They leave the message that power is being abused, people are being used as puppets, and that life is an everlasting cycle of rebirth and vengeance.

Should've Known Better, a #1 bestseller in Sports Romance, Moving Day, Underneath It All, Scorin' on the Fourth of July, and The Big Man Falls. SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER: Sarah Jenkins, a math geek and hockey fanatic, is thrilled when the NHL hires her as an advisor for the Buffalo Storm. She meets Sebastian St. Amant, a young hockey player looking to make the jump from the minors to the big leagues. When Sarah and Sebastian meet, sparks immediately fly. A relationship is out of the question—Sarah’s an influential staff member and Sebastian’s a player, not to mention over ten years her junior. But the impossible becomes the necessary when they can no longer fight their attraction. Will they weather the storm, or should they have known better? MOVING DAY: It's moving day for Sebastian, who's making a home with Sarah. Though Rob couldn't be happier for his friends, after the move has been completed he finds himself at loose ends, questioning the direction his own life is heading. Unbeknownst to him, Sebastian and Sarah are worried about the same thing and hope he can find someone special. Will he ever get his happy ending, or is Rob doomed to eternal bachelorhood? UNDERNEATH IT ALL: Professional hockey player Rob D'Amico meets kindergarten teacher Alaina Rossa through a reading program for inner-city students. When Rob observes the lack of even the basic supplies for their education, he takes it upon himself to get the students what they need. Is it possible Alaina’s soul mate could be found in a world so different from her own? And for Rob, the last person he thought he'd find forever love with was an elementary school teacher. SCORIN' ON THE FOURTH OF JULY: Mikael, who just signed a free agent with the Storm, agrees to play in a charity hockey tournament over the Fourth of July weekend, where he meets Terri, a female goaltender who recently won an Olympic gold medal. Both Mikael and Terri are facing turning points in their careers. Will they have to leave their passion on the ice? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study of romance novels to focus on issues of sexuality rather than gender, Historical Romance Fiction moves the ongoing debate about the value and appeal of heterosexual romance onto new ground, testing the claims of cutting-edge critical theorists on everything from popular classics by Georgette Heyer, to recent 'bodice rippers,' to historical fiction by John Fowles and A.S. Byatt. Beginning with her nomination of 'I love you' as the romance novel's defining speech act, Lisa Fletcher engages closely with speech-act theory and recent studies of performativity. The range of texts serves to illustrate Fletcher's definition of historical romance as a fictional mode dependent on the force and familiarity of the speech act, 'I love you', and permits Fletcher to provide a detailed account of the genre's history and development in both its popular and 'literary' manifestations. Written from a feminist and anti-homophobic perspective, Fletcher's subtle arguments about the romantic speech act serve to demonstrate the genre's dependence on repetition ('Romance can only quote') and the shaky ground on which the romance's heterosexual premise rests. Her exploration of the subgenre of cross-dressing novels is especially revealing in this regard. With its deft mix of theoretical arguments and suggestive close readings, Fletcher's book will appeal to specialists in genre, speech act and performativity theory, and gender studies.
