Book Synopsis Alaga'upu Fa'a - Samoa by : Erich Schultz
Download or read book Alaga'upu Fa'a - Samoa written by Erich Schultz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of rhetoric Samoans have shown both skill and artistry. The most frequently used and best beloved embellishment of the language to which the orator resorts, is the "muagagana", or "alaga'upu". This is a proverbial expression, taken from mythology, history, or even the every day lives of the people to illustrate opinions or utterances. Dictionaries have tended to include few "muagagana". This collection is an attempt to rectify this deficiency. First published in 1953, this is a new edition of this classic text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ua fuifui faatasi, ae vaoeseese "Gathered into one flock from different parts of the forest" The beauty of this Samoan proverb poetically describes The Samoans: A Global Family. From the tea estates of Sri Lanka to the deserts of the Sudan, from the Himalayas of Bhutan to the jungles of Brazil, and from the People's Republic of China to Papua New Guinea, a family is gathered in 285 color photographs captioned with the proverbs of 30 languages. Each person recounts his or her autobiography: a cardinal in Rome, a cowboy in the outback of Australia, a champion sumo wrestler in Japan, a jet pilot in nothern Alaska, an NFL football player at the Super Bowl, a nun in the slums of Lima, Peru. Each brings a story from his part of the "forest." The book is the result of a two-and-a-half-year odyssey around the world, through 45 countries and 20 states and into the lives of over 125 Samoans documenting what it means to be Samoan not only in Samoa but in the farthest reaches of the globe.
Book Synopsis Law Reform in Plural Societies by : Teleiai Lalotoa Mulitalo Ropinisone Silipa Seumanutafa
Download or read book Law Reform in Plural Societies written by Teleiai Lalotoa Mulitalo Ropinisone Silipa Seumanutafa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asserts that the Pacific Islands continue to struggle with the colonial legacy of plural legal systems, comprising laws and legal institutions from both the common law and the customary legal system. It also investigates the extent to which customary principles and values are accommodated in legislation. Focusing on Samoa, the author argues that South Pacific countries continue to adopt a Western approach to law reform without considering legal pluralism, which often results in laws which are unsuitable and irrelevant to Samoa. In the context of this system of law making, effective law reform in Samoa can only be achieved where the law reform process recognises the legitimacy of the two primary legal systems. The book goes on to present a law reform process that is more relevant and suitable for law making in the Pacific Islands or any post-colonial societies.

Book Synopsis Anoafale O Le Gagana Ma Le Aganuu by : Pemerika L. Tauiliili
Download or read book Anoafale O Le Gagana Ma Le Aganuu written by Pemerika L. Tauiliili and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Language and culture can be easily forgotten especially in today's society where it is not spoken and practiced all the time. Compounding the problem is the lack of written litterature, competition with other languages, especially the English language, the advent of modern technological advances promoting other languages, and the migration of Samoans to foreign lands. In the "Anoafale" the author tries to script Samoan cultural practices and language used during cultural ceremonies. Much of this appropriate language is foreign to many Samoans, even adults. These practices and ceremonial words were observed and learned by the author during his life time. The Kava ceremony, the presentaion of foods and gifts, the duties of the talking chief to his high chief are some of the etiquettes that soon will be forgotten if not written, spoken and practiced.

When should you be teine Samoa? And how can you be teine Samoa outside of Samoa? Lani is an afakasi, and is unsure of her Samoan heritage and what being Samoan even means. But one thing she knows for sure is that she's afraid of Vai and the 'Real Samoans'.
