Book excerpt: This study provides a detailed description of full-time and part-time faculty salary and fringe benefits in U.S. public community colleges nationally and by geographic type. A modified version of the 2010 Carnegie Basic Classification of Associate's Colleges was used to reclassify "Two-year Colleges under Four-Year Universities", "Primarily Associates", and "Baccalaureate/Associate's Colleges" into the seven existing geographic Carnegie classifications. Data was obtained from the National Center for Education Statistics Integrated Postsecondary Education System (IPEDS) for the 2010-2011 academic year, and the Fall 2010 Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW) Survey of Contingent Academic Work. Further analysis of salaries and fringe benefits groups states into those with and without collective bargaining, those with and without substantial local appropriations, the megastates and nonmegastates, and California compared to the rest of the nation. Significant differences in compensation for full-time faculty based on geographic type of community college were revealed. The national average salary was $63,717, while the average salary of faculty at rural medium sized community colleges was $52,893. Salaries earned by faculty at institutions with collective bargaining are far higher than in colleges without collective bargaining. Suburban faculty at institutions with local appropriations had the highest salary levels at $75,155 on average. Full-time community college faculty in California have the highest average salary of any state in the nation. The national average salary for part-time faculty per credit hour was $809.99. Part-time faculty with collective bargaining had higher salaries than those without collective bargaining. The part-time salaries of megastates and nonmegastates are similar. Fringe benefits for part-time faculty had variation by institution type, with more part-time faculty at suburban community colleges reporting fringe benefits than those attending rural or urban institutions. This study includes recommendations for further research that include (1) the adoption of the 2015 Modified Carnegie Basic Classification of Associate's Colleges, (2) performing additional quantitative statistical analysis of the data, and (3) requesting USED/NCES/IPEDS to begin again to collect fringe benefit data. Other recommendations include determining strategies to attract and retain faculty, performing a national study examining part-time instructors, and performing a similar study with K-12 faculty for comparison.

Book excerpt: Adopting curriculum vitae (CV) analysis method, this book collects CVs of university faculty from 109 universities of "The Double First Class University Plan" in China, and systematically analyses the mobility pattern of faculty in China for the first time. Examining the overall mobility frequency of Chinese faculty and its growing rate, the authors predict that after the epidemic, with the growing number of returned overseas talents, there may be a third wave of faculty mobility. They demonstrate that East Asia, the United States and Europe are the main channels for the inward talent mobility to China, and there are significant differences in China’s faculty mobility among different regions, disciplines and genders, which deserves further investigation. Furthermore, they argue the influencing factors of faculty mobility between China and foreign countries are highly different too. Scholars and students of Chinese higher education, international and comparative education may find this book helpful, and benefit from the analysis framework of Push and Pull Theory as long as CV analysis method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of original papers selected from the 19th Conference on Postal and Delivery Economics and authored by an international cast of economists, lawyers, regulators and industry practitioners addresses perhaps the major problem that has ever faced the postal sector – electronic competition from information and communication technologies (ICT). This has increased significantly over the last few years with a consequent serious drop in mail volume. All postal services have been hard hit by ICT, but probably the hardest hit is the United States Postal Service, which has lost almost a quarter of its mail volume since 2007. The loss of mail volume has a devastating effect on scale economies, which now work against post offices, forcing up their unit costs. Strategies to stem the loss in volume include non-linear pricing or volume discounts, increased efficiency and the development of new products. This loss of mail volume from ICT is one of a number of current problems addressed in this volume. The Universal Service Obligation (USO) continues to be a leading issue and concern that ICT undermines postal services' ability to finance the USO is discussed. The importance of measuring and forecasting demand and costs take on even greater importance as ICT undermines the foundations of the postal business. This thought provoking book brings to bear new analyses of the most serious threat post offices have ever faced and raises fundamental questions as to the future of mail. Multi-Modal Competition and the Future of Mail is an ideal resource for students, researchers in regulation and competition law, postal administrations, policy makers, consulting firms and regulatory bodies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is an emerging area of basic and clinical research, and has only recently been recognized as a major topic in biomedical research. Approximately 1 in 150 children are diagnosed as autistic, so it is also an intense growth area in behavioral and educational treatments. Financial resources have begun to be raised for more comprehensive research and an increasing number of scientists are becoming involved in autism research. In many respects, autism has become a model for conducting translational research on a psychiatric disorder. This text provides a comprehensive summary of all current knowledge related to the behavioral, experiential, and biomedical features of the autism spectrum disorders including major behavioral and cognitive syndromology, common co-morbid conditions, neuropathology, neuroimmunology, and other neurological correlates such as seizures, allergy and immunology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, and epidemiology. Edited by three leading researchers, this volume contains over 80 chapters and nine shorter commentaries by thought leaders in the field, making the book a virtual "who's who" of autism research. This carefully developed book is a comprehensive and authoritative reference for what we know in this area as well as a guidepost for the next several years in all areas of autism research.
