Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a limited airworthiness flight evaluation of an NUH-1H helicopter in which a prototype global positioning system (GPS) was installed. Flight tests were conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, between 18 and 27 January 1977. Nine test flights were conducted for a total of 11 productive flight hours. Testing was performed to determine the effect of GPS installation on vibration and pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) characteristics of the NUH-1H helicopter. During this test, one deficiency and one shortcoming were noted. The deficiency was insufficient aft longitudinal control margin in rearward flight. The shortcoming was insufficient directional control margin in hover and low-speed flight. The deficiency and the shortcoming were a result of the gross weight and center of gravity of the helicopter after installation of the GPS, although both were within normal UH-1H operating limits. There was no significant effect on vibration characteristics or increase in PIO tendencies of the NUH-1H as a result of the GPS installation. (Author).

This book was released on 1977 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the EH-1H Helicopter Quick Fix Phase 1A to determine the effects of the installation of the AN/ARQ-33 radio countermeasures system and its associated equipment on aircraft handling qualities. The helicopter was tested from 18 through 23 August 1977 at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. During the tests, nine flights totaling 8.5 productive flight hours were flown. The handling qualities of the EH-1H helicopter were determined to be satisfactory with the exception of inadequate directional control in right sideward flight. An enhancing characteristic noted was the simultaneous antenna retraction systems. Inadequate directional control at right sideward velocities between 5 and 15 knots true airspeed was a deficiency. Two shortcomings were noted: the susceptibility to damage of the right FM 10-120 homing antenna during preflight/maintenance operations and the susceptibility to damage of the FM 10-242 communications antenna during running takeoff/landing maneuvers. Book Synopsis Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of a UH-1 Equipped with a Terrain Mapping Receiver Antenna by : Frederick W. Stellar
Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of a UH-1 Equipped with a Terrain Mapping Receiver Antenna written by Frederick W. Stellar and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preliminary airworthiness evaluation of the UH-1H helicopter equipped with the receiver antenna of the Terrain Mapping Radar System was conducted in Lakehurst, New Jersey, between 21 November and 8 December 1986. The evaluation required 12 flights for a total of 14.8 hours, or which 12.0 hours were productive. Performance, handling qualities, and structural dynamic response tests were conducted. The modified UH-1H equipped with the receiver antenna demonstrated adequate handling qualities for the terrain mapping mission. However, the proposed mission profile requires extensive operation of the helicopter in an out-of-ground effect (OGE) hover. Although the handling qualities are acceptable, the degraded autorotational characteristics may preclude a safe autorotational landing in the event of a sudden engine failure at an OGE hover below 1000 feet above ground level. The minimum directional control margin and high pilot workload to maintain heading during low speed flight were a shortcoming. Three additional shortcomings were found during the evaluation.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation (PAE) of a UH-1H helicopter equipped with a Multiple Target Electronic Warfare System (MULTEWS) from 13 August through 2 December 1977. The evaluation was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and required 45 flights for a total productive flight time of 41 hours. The test program was terminated when the test aircraft sustained major damage during height-velocity testing. The addition of the MULTEWS equipment to the UH-1H airframe caused significant degradation in performance and handling qualities. Changes in the operator's manual should be made to reflect the changes in performance for MULTEWS configured aircraft. The MULTEWS installation also generally degraded the vibration characteristics of the UH-1H, increased structural loads, increased the maintenance workload, and degraded aircraft crashworthiness. The degradation in performance and handling qualities as well as the excessive vibrations and structural loads in the MULTEWS configured aircraft were attributed to the extremely high drag and turbulent wake of the externally mounted MULTEWS components.

Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-1H Helicopter with the T53-L-703 Engine Installed written by Charles E. Cassil and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance, handling qualities, and overall engine-airframe compatibility were evaluated to substantiate an airworthiness release and appropriate restrictions in the operator's manual. These tests were conducted at Bakersfield, Edwards AFB, Bishop, and Coyote Flats, California. Thirty-four flights were conducted for a total of 26.3 productive flight hours. the performance, handling qualities, and overall engine-airframe compatibility of the aircraft with the T53-L-13B engine are unchanged from those with the T53-L-13B engine when the aircraft is operated within the power-available capability of the -13B. Two shortcomings were identified: (1) poor torque gauge readability, and (2) ignition key location. Engine exhaust impingement on the tail boom produced skin temperatures high enough to cause loss of tail boom structural strength. No engine installation or maintenance problems were encountered during the evaluation.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted an Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics evaluation of the UH-1H aircraft with an Improved Engine Air Filtration System (IEAFS) installed and with the standard filter installed between 16 September 1987 and 29 February 1988. Aircraft performance and handling qualities, engine-air induction system compatibility, and engine performance with the IEAFS installed were evaluated. This evaluation was conducted at Edwards AFB, California. Twenty-five flights were conducted for a total of 20.1 productive flight hours. The aircraft performance and handling qualities, engine vibrations, and inlet temperature characteristics with the IEAFS installed are not significantly different from those of the standard UH-1H. The inlet pressure distortion and engine installation losses with the IEAFS installed are less than those of the standard UH-1H. One deficiency, the poor reliability of the IEAFS latch rivets, was identified. One shortcoming, the poor reliability of the latch lever locking device, was identified. Both the deficiency and the shortcoming should be corrected before production. Engine installation losses, Engine vibrations, Engine air filtration system, Inlet pressure distortion, Inlet temperature characteristics, Performance, Handling qualities, Standard filter. (mjm).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Army Aviation Engineering Flight Activity conducted a Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-1H/HIND-D Surrogate to determine if any significant handling qualities differences existed between the HIND-D Surrogate configured aircraft and the standard UH-1H helicopter. This evaluation was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California from 12 September to 3 October 1985. Fifteen flights were conducted for a total of 12.7 hours, of which 8.4 hours were productive. The handling qualities of the UH-1H/HIND-D Surrogate were not significantly different from the standard UH-1H helicopter. Two shortcomings were indentified: residual water collected in the bottom of the visual modification nose turret following exposure to rain, and debonding of the rubber pads located on the engine cowl near the upper aft detector belt attaching point.
Book Synopsis Combined Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation and Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation of the UH-1H with Preproduction Hub Spring and Composite Main Rotor Blades Installed by : Gary L. Skinner
Download or read book Combined Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation and Airworthiness and Flight Characteristics Evaluation of the UH-1H with Preproduction Hub Spring and Composite Main Rotor Blades Installed written by Gary L. Skinner and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army has incorporated a main rotor hub spring on the UH-1H helicopter designed to reduce large main rotor flapping angles which occur during some flight maneuvers. Composite main rotor blades (CMRB), also incorporated, are intended to increase performance and to improve reliability and survivability of the UH-1H. A preliminary airworthiness evaluation was conducted to determine suitability of the combined preproduction CMRB and hub spring configuration for compliance with the CMRB Critical Item Development Specification (CIDS). Due to high vibration characteristics and the occurrence of cyclic control feedback contributing to loss of aircraft control associated with CMRB, additional testing was conducted for comparison with standard metal main rotor blades (STD) and composite main rotor blades constructed with production tooling (PROD CMRB). Flight testing was evaluated under a variety of operating conditions from field elevations of 2302 ft to 9980 ft. Some improvement was noted in out-of-ground effect hover performance with PROD CMRB compared to CMRB, while level flight performance of the CMRB and PROD CMRB was not significantly different. Performance improved for the PROD CMRB compared to STD, but did not meet CIDS requirements. Handling qualities are similar for CMRB and PROD CMRB, and deteriorated when compared to STD with regard to maneuvering characteristics and main rotor speed control during autorotation. (edc).

Download or read book Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation of the UH-1H with Hot Metal Plus Plume Infrared Suppressor and Infrared Jammer written by Bartholomew D Picasso (III.) and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preliminary Airworthiness Evaluation (PAE) of the UH-1H, with the Infrared (IR) Suppressor and AN/ALQ-144 IR Jammer installed, was conducted using a JUH-1H helicopter. A total of 20.7 hours were flown during this test program. This PAE was an evaluation of a redesigned IR suppressor and IR jammer installation for the UH-1H helicopter. The initial design was reported to have caused a degradation in directional stability. The installation was redesigned to reduce the airflow disturbance over the tail rotor and vertical stabilizer. This evaluation was conducted in two phases. Phase I (9.5 flight hours) was a comparative evaluation of handling qualities of the UH-1H in both the standard and IR suppressor configurations. Phase II (11.2 flight hours) was primarily a pressure and temperature survey of the IR suppressor configuration. The handling qualities of the UH-1H helicopter were essentially unchanged by the IR suppressor and IR jammer installation tested. The previously reported degradation in directional stability was not observed during this test. The tail boom surface temperatures were generally higher for the initial design and the structural implications of these higher temperatures should be investigated. One deficiency, the metal to metal contact between the engine exhaust ejector and the IR suppressor inner core support struts, was identified. Three shortcomings were also identified.
