Book excerpt: A theory is developed for the airfoil of finite span at supersonic speed analogous to the Prandtl airfoil theory of 1918-1919 for incompressible flow. In addition to the profile and induced drags, account must be taken at supersonic flow of still another drag, namely, the wave drag, which is independent of the wing aspect ratio. Both wave and induced drags are proportional to the square of the lift and depend on the Mach number, that is, the ratio of flight to sound speed. In general, in the case of supersonic flow, the drag-lift ratio is considerably less favorable than is the case for incompressible flow. Among others the following examples are considered: 1) lifting line with constant lift distribution (horseshoe vortex); 2) computation of wave and induced drag and the twist of a trapezoidal wing of constant lift density; 3) computation of the lift distribution and drag of an untwisted rectangular wing.

The cases considered thus far are symmetrical airfoils at zero lift having plan forms bounded by straight lines. Because of the conical form of the elementary flow fields the results are comparable in simplicity to the results of the two-dimensional thin-airfoil theory for subsonic speeds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originator of many of the theories used in modern wing design, Robert T. Jones surveys the aerodynamics of wings from the early theories of lift to modern theoretical developments. This work covers the behavior of wings at both low and high speeds, including the range from very low Reynolds numbers to the determination of minimum drag at supersonic speed. Emphasizing analytical techniques, Wing Theory provides invaluable physical principles and insights for advanced students, professors, and aeronautical engineers, as well as for scientists involved in computational approaches to the subject. This book is based on over forty years of theoretical and practical work performed by the author and other leading researchers in the field of aerodynamics. Originally published in 1990. Book excerpt: An analysis, based on the linearized thin-airfoil theory for supersonic speeds, of the wave drag at zero lift has been carried out for a simple two-body arrangement consisting of two wedgelike surfaces, each with a rhombic lateral cross section and emanating from a common apex. Such an arrangement could be used as two stores, either embedded within or mounted below a wing, or as auxiliary bodies wherein the upper halves could be used as stores and the lower halves for bomb or missile purposes. The complete range of supersonic Mach numbers has been considered and it was found that by orienting the axes of the bodies relative to each other a given volumen may be redistributed in a manner which enables the wave drag to be reduced within the lower supersonic speed range (where the leading edge is substantially subsonic). At the higher Mach numbers, the wave drag is always increased.

Book excerpt: The present paper makes use of and extends a paper by Munk in which simple dynamic concepts are used to prove that the lift-curve slope and thickness drag of supersonic airfoils or system of airfoils with supersonic edges are the same when the airfoil is flown in a reversed direction. This extension of Munk's work provides a proof that the thickness drag, lift-curve slope, damping in roll, and the damping-in-pitch parameter remain the same when any airfoil is reversed, in both subsonic and supersonic flow. The theorem applies to cases in which the trailing-edge velocities are finite; no restrictions are placed on plan form.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted at subsonic Mach numbers in the Langley rectangular high-speed tunnel on five supersonic airfoils and, for comparison, on two subsonic airfoils. Two-dimensional data were obtained by pressure measurements and schlieren photographs at angles of attack from 0 degrees to 4 degrees for Mach numbers between 0.30 and 0.90 for these 6-percent-thick symmetrical airfoils.

Book excerpt: This paper constitutes a theoretical study of the aerodynamic forces on an oscillating or steady wing of finite span moving forward at a uniform supersonic speed. The treatment is based on the linearized theory obtained by considering only small disturbances in an ideal fluid. The wing is therefore considered to be a nearly flat thin surface at a small angle of attack and the flow is considered non- viscous and free of strong shocks. The theory in this case is equivalent to finding certain solutions of the wave equation in three dimensions with respect to a moving coordinate system.

Book excerpt: The determination of optimum two-dimensional airfoils at moderate supersonic speeds is considered using linear theory and second-order theory. Three cases are investigated: (a) the airfoil of minimum drag at zero angle of attack, (b) the airfoil of minimum drag at zero lift, and (c) the airfoil of maximum lift-to-drag ratio. It is assumed that the length is given and that various constraints are imposed on the thickness, the enclosed area, the moment of inertia of the contour, and the moment of inertia of the enclosed area. If linear theory is employed, the minimum drag airfoil is symmetric with respect to the chord. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio airfoil is also symmetric with respect to the chord and identical with the minimum drag airfoil regardless of the constraints imposed on the thickness, the enclosed area, the moment of inertia of the contour, and the moment of inertia of the enclosed area. If second-order theory is employed and the analysis is confined to symmetric shapes, the minimum drag airfoil and the maximum lift-to-drag ratio airfoil are identical, regardless of the constraints imposed on the thickness, the enclosed area, the moment of inertia of the contour, and the moment of inertia of the enclosed area. Finally, if second-order theory is employed and the analysis is extended to arbitrary shapes, the minimum drag airfoil is still symmetric with respect to the chord. However, the maximum lift-to-drag ratio airfoil is asymmetric and, therefore, not identical with the minimum drag airfoil. (Author).
