Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report briefly summarizes to late 1970 Rand's findings concerning aircraft inspection intervals and content at base and depot levels. In 1966, the Military Airlift Command switched from a flying hour inspection of their C-141s to an isochronal or calendar time inspection at base level. This allowed a team of investigators to study the effects that variable flying hours have on aircraft. They found that between inspections, aircraft with many flying hours appeared to perform no differently on maintenance and operations measures than aircraft with fewer flying hours. These data suggested that some aircraft inspection intervals could be safely extended, and in some instances this has already begun. (Author).

Embark on a fascinating journey into the intricate world of aircraft maintenance with "Aircraft Inspection." This comprehensive guide takes you through the evolution of Inspection and Maintenance History, unveiling the vital role played by the Maintenance Steering Group (MSG) to ensuring the safety, dependability, and economical operation of aircraft. Dive into the Federal Aviation Regulations (Fares) with confidence after exploring Chapter 2, where complex concepts are demystified, making them accessible and advantageous for readers. Gain a profound understanding of the disparities between FAR Part 91, Part 121, and Part 135, delving into the depths of regulations designed to safeguard the flying public. Explore "The Forces of Attrition" and discover the relentless wear and tear aircraft endure daily. Armed with this knowledge, inspectors are equipped to conduct meticulous inspections, ensuring the safety and longevity of these flying marvels. The Inspection chapter covers Safety, Tools, Types of Inspections, Inspection Guides, Techniques, and Strategies, offering a comprehensive framework for conducting thorough examinations. Non-Destructive Testing, Engine Borescope, and Aircraft Representative Duties are also explored, providing a well-rounded perspective on inspection practices. Recognize the pivotal role of Maintenance and Inspection Records, emphasizing the importance of accurate documentation for effective maintenance applications. Delve into the intricacies of Discrepancy and Correction action recording, highlighted through real stories that underscore the consequences of inaccuracies in records. The narrative unfolds with 16 gripping stories of Aircraft Accidents, offering invaluable lessons derived from incidents involving mechanics or inspectors. Analyze these scenarios to understand what went wrong and, more importantly, how to prevent similar accidents in the future. Corrosion emerges as a significant challenge for aircraft, addressed with precision in Chapter 9. Sharpen your senses as you delve into the intricacies of corrosion detection during inspections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condition-Based Maintenance in Aviation: The History, The Business and The Technology describes the history and practice of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) systems by showcasing ten technical papers from the archives of SAE International, stretching from the dawn of the jet age down to the present times. By scientifically understanding how different components degrade during operations, it is possible to schedule inspections, repairs, and overhauls at appropriate intervals so that any incipient failure can be detected well in advance. Today, this includes more sensors and analytics so that periodic inspections are replaced by automated "continuous" inspections, and analytical methods that detect imminent failures and predict degradation issues more economically and efficiently. Similar concepts are also being developed for delivering prognostics functions, such as tracking of remaining useful life (RUL) of life-limited parts in aircraft engines. The discipline within CBM that deals with this is called prognostics and health management (PHM), which covers all aspects of diagnostics and prognostics, including modeling of systems and subsystems, sensing, data transmission, storage and retrieval, analytical methods, and decision making. Traditionally, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been employed during the major airplane checks to assess structural damage. These techniques are enhanced with in- situ sensing techniques that can continuously monitor aircraft structures and report on their health. The move to condition-based assessment of maintenance needs to be balanced by the assurance that safety is not compromised, that initial cost of new equipment is amortized by the savings, and that regulatory authorities are on board with any modifications to the planned maintenance schedule. The trend is clearly to include more CBM functions into Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) processes so better cost control can be achieved without ever comprising passenger safety.

Book excerpt: The Air Force Logistics Command (AFLC), the Ogden Air Materiel Area (OOAMA), and The Rand Corporation are jointly conducting a Levels of Maintenance Study (LOMS). This report describes a portion of that study. It presents the charts and text of a briefing concerning an alternative arrangement for performing major base-level scheduled inspections on F-4 aircraft to reduce redundancy between base and depot inspections. It explains the proposed method, describes several factors that make it seem both sensible and appropriate, and suggests field testing. In addition, it extends the information presented at the briefing by providing background research.
