Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an analysis of the air entrainment processes in free-surface flows. These flows are investigated as homogeneous mixtures with variable density. Several types of air-water free-surface flows are studied: plunging jet flows, open channel flows, and turbulent water jets discharging into air. Experimental observations reported by the author confirm the concept that the air-water mixture behaves as a homogeneous compressible fluid in each case. This book will be of great interest to professionals working in many fields of engineering: chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical, mining, metallurgy, and nuclear. Covers new information on the air-water flow field: air bubble distributions, air-water velocity profiles, air bubble sizes and bubble-turbulence interactions Features new analysis is developed for each flow configuration and compared successfully with model and prototype data Includes over 372 references and more than 170 figures with over 60 photographs Presents useful information for design engineers and research-and-development scientists who require a better understanding of the fluid mechanics of air-water flows

Book excerpt: Science and Technology of Concrete Admixtures presents admixtures from both a theoretical and practical point-of-view. The authors emphasize key concepts that can be used to better understand the working mechanisms of these products by presenting a concise overview on the fundamental behavior of Portland cement and hydraulic binders as well as their chemical admixtures, also discussing recent effects in concrete in terms of rheology, mechanics, durability, and sustainability, but never forgetting the fundamental role played by the water/binder ratio and proper curing in concrete technology. Part One presents basic knowledge on Portland cement and concrete, while Part Two deals with the chemical and physical background needed to better understand what admixtures are chemically, and through which mechanism they modify the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete. Subsequent sections present discussions on admixtures technology and two particular types of concrete, self-consolidating and ultra-high strength concretes, with final remarks on their future. Combines the knowledge of two leading authors to present both the scientific and technology of admixtures Explains what admixtures are from a chemical point-of-view and illustrates by which mechanisms they modify the properties of fresh and hardened concrete Presents a fundamental, practical, and innovative reference book on the topic Contains three detailed appendices that can be used to learn how to use admixtures more efficiently

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst most structures made using concrete and cement-based composites have not shown signs of premature degradation, there have been notable exceptions. In addition, there is increasing pressure for new structures to remain in serviceable condition for long periods with only minimal maintenance before being recycled. All these factors have highlighted the issues of what affects the durability of these materials in different circumstances and how material properties can be measured and improved. Durability of concrete and cement composites summarises key research on these important topics. After an introductory chapter, the book reviews the pore structure and chemistry of cement-based materials, providing the foundation for understanding the particular aspects of degradation which are discussed in the following chapters. These include dimensional stability and cracking processes, chemical and microbiological degradation of concrete, corrosion of reinforcing and prestressing steels, deterioration associated with certain aggregates, effects of frost and problems involving fibre-reinforced and polymer-cement composites. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Durability of concrete and cement composites is a standard reference for all those concerned with improving the service life of structures using these materials. Analyses a range of materials such as reinforced steel in concrete, pre-stressed concrete and cement composites Discusses key degradation phenomena such as cracking processes and the impact of cold weather conditions A standard reference for those concerned with improving the service life of structures using concrete and cement based composites

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that air entrainment, a purposeful introduction of small air bubbles in concrete, is critical to the long-term durability of concrete in freeze-thaw environments. Air entraining admixtures (AEA) are added to the mixture to stabilize air bubbles created during mixing, ensuring a proper air void system in the hardened concrete. Despite the complexity of creating a suitable air void system in concrete, previous study and experience established the reliability and robustness of such systems under a variety of conditions through use of neutralized vinsol resin (NVR) AEA products. In recent years, synthetic AEAs have been used more frequently due to limited supply of NVR to the concrete industry. With the use of synthetic AEAs, there are more reports of new problems including difficulties in accurately measuring the air content. This study was conducted to find the root cause of the increasing difficulties in controlling the air contents in portland cement concrete associated with synthetic AEAs. Main challenges included the lack of existing techniques to evaluate AEAs and air bubbles in concrete, and lack of data to help identify causes. Given these challenges, a multi-scale experimental study that included testing of field and laboratory concrete, and testing of foam and individual air bubbles was undertaken. The results indicate that the disparity between QC test results and the actual air contents in concrete pavements associated with the use of synthetic AEAs could be attributed to less robust air bubbles stabilized with synthetic AEAs compared to those entrained with NVR and the resulting increased loss of these air bubbles during concrete sampling. The cause of this decreased robustness and resulting air loss was traced directly to the properties of the bubble shells. The shells of air bubbles in concrete entrained with synthetic AEAs were thinner and less stiff than those associated with an NVR AEA. Through this research new test protocols were developed to measure stiffness and thickness of the shell of air bubbles extracted from cement paste and to quantify stability of foams of AEAs in a cementitious environment. These tests could be used by researchers and practitioners who are interested in developing new admixtures and/or identifying admixtures with undesirable performance.

Book excerpt: This is the state-of-the-art report prepared by the RILEM TC “Application of Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) in concrete construction”. It gives a comprehensive overview of the properties of SAP, specific water absorption and desorption behaviour of SAP in fresh and hardening concrete, effects of the SAP addition on rheological properties of fresh concrete, changes of cement paste microstructure and mechanical properties of concrete. Furthermore, the key advantages of using SAP are described in detail: the ability of this material to act as an internal curing agent to mitigate autogenous shrinkage of high-performance concrete, the possibility to use SAP as an alternative to air-entrainment agents in order to increase the frost resistance of concrete, and finally, the benefit of steering the rheology of fresh cement-based materials. The final chapter describes the first existing and numerous prospective applications for this new concrete additive.

Book excerpt: Pore Structure of Cement-Based Materials provides a thorough treatment of the experimental techniques used to characterize the pore structure of materials. The text presents the principles and practical applications of the techniques used, organized in an easy-to-follow and uncomplicated manner, providing the theoretical background, the way to analyze experimental data, and the factors affecting the results. The book is the single comprehensive source of the techniques most commonly used for pore structure analysis, covering simple techniques like mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption, to the more sophisticated small-angle scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance. The book is an essential reference text for researchers, users, and students in materials science, applied physics, and civil engineering, who seek a deep understanding of the principles and limitations of the techniques used for pore structure analysis of cement-based materials.
