Book excerpt: Agroforestry is an age old practice throughout the world, but its recognition as a science is nearly three decades old. The scientific and systematic research on tree-crop interactions, in India, started in late 1970's and got major support and impetus with the establishment of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Agroforestry in 1983 by ICAR. Today AICRP on Agroforestry has its network through out the country. Under AICRP and through the individual efforts of State Agricultural Universities, location specific agroforestry systems has been recommended to suit agro-climatic zones, landholdings and economic status of the region. Though extensive research had been done till date, but it is not available to scientific world, farming communities (who are the backbone of Indian rural development), students and inquisitive readers in one manuscript. This prompted the authors to club the information on agroforestry systems and practices prevailing in India in form of book. For the sake of convenience, agroforestry systems prevailing in India have been divided into four broad sections i) Agroforestry in India ii) Agroforestry system and practices in North, West and Central India iii) Agroforestry systems and practices in East, North-East and Southern India iv) Allied topics related to Agroforestry. Section one cover topics covering agroforestry experiences, research and extension efforts done in the last 25 years in India. Section two includes 13 chapters and section three covers 14 chapters wherein agroforestry research vis-à-vis agroclimatic zones of different states of India have been discussed. The last section comprising of 8 chapters includes topics related to role of agroforestry in soil conservation, women development; management of agroforestry; modeling; rehabilitation of mine spoils and breeding of agroforestry tree species.

Book excerpt: Agroforestry research is central to developing methods for the sustainable use of natural renewable resources, evolving to address the needs of the coming century. It is now necessary to consolidate the scientific gains now being made in process-oriented research and to develop a policy framework to encourage the adoption of sustainable land use practices. Agroforestry plays an important role in conserving forest resources, reducing the need for deforestation. Further, if `forest' is broadly defined as tree cover, agroforestry will also increase the proportion of woody biomass in farming landscapes. The papers selected for inclusion in Agroforestry: Science, Policy, and Practice establish agroforestry as an interdisciplinary science focused on the practical imperative of assisting farmers, forest dwellers and landscape-level planners to achieve sustainable food, fuel and timber production into the 21st century.

Book excerpt: "This project aimed to enhance the capacity of household agroforestry systems and community forests to generate livelihoods and food security in the mid-hills region of Nepal. Nepal is the 17th poorest country in the world; 41% of the population are under-nourished and 30 of its 75 districts are food insecure. 66% of the population live off a combination of agriculture and forest products. Low productivity, sub-optimal management, limited marketing opportunities, and inequitable centralised planning and service delivery prevent forestry systems from providing adequate livelihoods. This project improved management of agroforestry and community forestry systems through biophysical practices and institutional and governance models. It also provided insights into improving existing markets, creating markets for forest products, and bringing abandoned agricultural land back into productive and equitable use."--Website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry has emerged as a potential tool for checking land degradation, one of the serious threats facing mankind. Also, it has much to offer in providing diverse products for use by the ever-increasing human and livestock population on a sustainable basis. In the Asia-Pacific region the need for practicing such a technology is of special significance on account of decrease in land-man ratio and increase in deforestation rate to dangerous levels. This edited book, with papers contributed by eminent agroforestry professionals from eight countries, presents an account of land degradation and its associated risks, indigenous and improved agroforestry and grassland practices, their potential in sequestering carbon on wastelands. Socio-economic considerations of technology adoption by farmers in large numbers, and recent advances in agroforestry for specific situations in India, China, Australia, the UK, Indonesia, Nepal, Hungary, and Sri Lanka have also been accounted for. Besides these, the issues of environmental implications and for future development strategies have been highlighted.
