Book Synopsis Handcuffs and Chain Link by : Benjamin Gonzalez O'Brien
Download or read book Handcuffs and Chain Link written by Benjamin Gonzalez O'Brien and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handcuffs and Chain Link enters the immigration debate by addressing one of its most controversial aspects: the criminalization both of extralegal immigration to the United States and of immigrants themselves in popular and political discourse. Looking at the factors that led up to criminalization, Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien points to the alternative approach of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and how its ultimate demise served to negatively reinforce the fictitious association of extralegal immigrants with criminality. Crucial to Gonzalez O’Brien’s account thus is the concept of the critical policy failure—a piece of legislation that attempts a radically different approach to a major issue but has shortcomings that ultimately further entrench the approach it was designed to supplant. The IRCA was just such a piece of legislation. It highlighted the contributions of the undocumented and offered amnesty to some while attempting to stem the flow of extralegal immigration by holding employers accountable for hiring the undocumented. The failure of this effort at decriminalization prompted a return to criminalization with a vengeance, leading to the stalemate on immigration policy that persists to this day.

Book Synopsis The Invisible Handcuffs of Capitalism by : Michael Perelman
Download or read book The Invisible Handcuffs of Capitalism written by Michael Perelman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream economics ignores or distorts the most fundamental aspect of this reality: that the vast majority of people must, out of necessity, labor on behalf of others, transformed into nothing but a means to the end of maximum profits for their employers. The nature of the work we do and the conditions under which we do it profoundly shape our lives. And yet, both of these factors are peripheral to mainstream economics. By sweeping labor under the rug, mainstream economists hide the nature of capitalism, making it appear to be a system based upon equal exchange rather than exploitation inside every workplace.

Book Synopsis AI in Agriculture for Sustainable and Economic Management by : Sirisha Potluri
Download or read book AI in Agriculture for Sustainable and Economic Management written by Sirisha Potluri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the best practices and their respective outcomes in artificial intelligence (AI) to meet sustainable development goals and demands. It examines the practices, technologies, and innovations at the core of various research issues to meet the sustainable development demands in agriculture to balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability with AI. AI in Agriculture for Sustainable and Economic Management discusses AI-driven nanotechnology approaches for precision agriculture and solutions for the optimization of farming resources and their management. The authors examine the impact of AI in agriculture and how technology-driven sustainable farming with smart waste-water treatment for zero waste for the circular economy can extend crop shelf-life. It discusses how AI expertise can be advantageous to envisage and evaluate the increasing demands of productivity, and to help to maintain ecosystems and strengthen the capacity for crop adaptation in response to drastic changes in climate and weather, natural disasters, and other significant factors. These findings and practices are also useful to emphasize how an agricultural ecosystem can be advanced and industrialized so that it can aid not only large commercial farms but also smaller farmlands. Finally, it also discusses how AI practices will help to find a balance between the volume of food manufactured and the proper maintenance of the ecosystem. This book is intended for researchers and upper graduate students interested in artificial intelligence in agricultural engineering, AI advances in crop science and technology for sustainable development.
