Book Synopsis Political Settlements and Agricultural Transformation in Africa by : Martin Atela
Download or read book Political Settlements and Agricultural Transformation in Africa written by Martin Atela and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which political settlements can contribute to positive changes in Africa’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Contemporary Africa has seen many governments, donors, and commercial private enterprises supporting innovative agricultural and agroprocessing schemes with the purpose of diversifying economies. However, many of the schemes collapse or at best fail to generate the needed jobs. Focusing on case studies in Kenya, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, this book takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines economic analysis, life histories, policy approaches methods, and political economy theory to reframe the field with new questions. The contributors offer alternative explanations for the failure of employment creation schemes in Africa and show how political settlements can bring together stakeholders to settle on win–win approaches to productive employment schemes and inclusive development. Providing new insights on the political economy of agrarian and labour relations in Africa, this book will be of interest to policy actors and development practitioners wishing to support inclusive growth in Africa, as well as to scholars of African politics and economics, public policy, and development.

Download or read book Agrindus written by Haim Halperim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fascinating insight into some of the most important thinking of the industrial revolution in Israel. Technological revolution, rapid industrialization and higher levels of productivity all drew more and more people from the agricultural workforce and new ideas were needed to combat this serious loss of labour. At the time this book was first published, Professor Halperim's had somthing new and original to offer. He argued that agriculture could be combined with industry without undermining that age-old social asset, the village community, and bring it into line with changing conditions. As he predicted the development of areas comprising a score or more of villages, ranging around non-agriculture has been preserved, and rural society has continued to exist although it has assumed different forms. The name proposed by the author for this new formation is Agrindus, as it expresses the integration of AGRiculture and INDUStries.

Book Synopsis Europeanization, Integration and Identity by : Gamze Tanil
Download or read book Europeanization, Integration and Identity written by Gamze Tanil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how domestic and European structures impact on national actors’ identities, interests and foreign policy practices. Employing Norway as the case study area, the author uses this nation as an example to assess Europeanization and identity politics across the European Union (EU). Utilising an original and innovative approach called ‘social constructivist fusion perspective’, the author addresses Europeanization across several key factors. The author assesses the influence of the EU on ‘half-way member countries’, and the impact of identity politics and domestic structures, which factors contribute to or hinder Europeanization, and attempts to empirically measure Europeanization at the actor level. It analyses the impact of domestic and European structures on the identities, interests, attitudes and foreign policy practices of the Norwegian policy-makers. Whilst contributing to knowledge and literature on how constructivist approaches can be utilized in empirical studies of political elites, this book goes beyond theory to demonstrate that Europeanization is not only institutional, and provides evidence of the influence of identity politics. Europeanization, Integration and Identity will be or interest to students, scholars and policy-makers in the field of European Union politics, international relations, social constructivism and Scandinavian politics.

Book Synopsis Thawing Permafrost by : J. van Huissteden
Download or read book Thawing Permafrost written by J. van Huissteden and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a cross-disciplinary overview of permafrost and the carbon cycle by providing an introduction into the geographical distribution of permafrost, with a focus on the distribution of permafrost and its soil carbon reservoirs. The chapters explain the basic physical properties and processes of permafrost soils: ice, mineral and organic components, and how these interact with climate, vegetation and geomorphological processes. In particular, the book covers the role of the large quantities of ice in many permafrost soils which are crucial to understanding carbon cycle processes. An explanation is given on how permafrost becomes loaded with ice and carbon. Gas hydrates are also introduced. Structures and processes formed by the intense freeze-thaw action in the active layer are considered (e.g. ice wedging, cryoturbation), and the processes that occur as the permafrost thaws, (pond and lake formation, erosion). The book introduces soil carbon accumulation and decomposition mechanisms and how these are modified in a permafrost environment. A separate chapter deals with deep permafrost carbon, gas reservoirs and recently discovered methane emission phenomena from regions such as Northwest Siberia and the Siberian yedoma permafrost.
