Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report on the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of the aging of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Compared to research on the aging of asphalt cement, there has been little research on the aging of asphalt mixtures. Binder studies are considered as well as mixture sutdies, the relationship between laboratory aging tests and field performance, and the relationship between chemical composition and field performance. Recommendations are made for aging procedures which show promise for laboratory investigation. Test methods to evaluate aging are also considered. It is noted that extended heating procedures show the most promise for short-term aging and pressure oxidation and/or extended heating the most promise for long-term aging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt modification is an important area in the development of new road and pavement materials. There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

Book excerpt: Aging phenomenon of asphalt material exists in the course of mixing, spreading, and rolling of asphalt mixture, as well as the use in the asphalt pavement. The indirect tensile strength test was used to evaluate the performance of asphalt mixtures at low-temperature under different aging conditions. As compared with the results from the original short-term aging and the long-term aging asphalt mixtures, the results show that the original asphalt mixture cannot reflect the real performance of the asphalt mixture in the field. The short-term aging specimens are more sensitive than long-term aging specimens in evaluating the performance of the asphalt mixture at low temperature. Tests results also indicate that the consideration of aging during the evaluation of asphalt pavement performance is necessary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook lays out the state of the art for modeling of asphalt concrete as the major structural component of flexible pavements. The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.

Book excerpt: Oxidative aging is known to be one of the main contributors to reducing the service life of asphalt pavements. Asphalt concrete becomes stiffer and more brittle when it reacts with oxygen. The aged asphalt pavement is more susceptible to crack development and damages when subjected to repeated traffic loading. The aim of this dissertation is to develop and validate a mechanistic-based aging constitutive relationship based on an aging state variable. Oxidative aging of asphalt concrete involves a thermodynamic process between reactive molecules of asphalt and oxygen. The repercussion of such a process is a change in mechanical, macroscopic properties of the material. This phenomenon is accounted for in this study by formulating an aging constitutive equation, based on continuum theory, in which the aging state variable is correlated with oxygen content via an evolution function. In this aging constitutive equation, the rate of change of the aging variable and oxygen content are formulated as conjugate variables. In other words, oxygen content is considered as the driving force for the rate of change of the aging variable. The rate of change of the aging state variable is expressed as a function of oxygen content, temperature, and level of aging at any given time. The behavior of asphalt concrete is modeled using the PANDA (Pavement Analysis Using a Nonlinear Damage Approach) framework, which accounts for the viscoelastic, viscodamage, and viscoplastic behavior of the materials. The time-dependent response of aged asphalt concrete is investigated by introducing the aging state variable to Schapery's viscoelastic model. The aging state variable causes an increase in the stiffness and viscosity of the aged material by decreasing the compliance terms and the retardation times. Because the viscoelastic, viscodamage, and viscoplastic components of PANDA are coupled or interrelated, the change in the viscoelastic properties, because of aging, affects the overall mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete. The aging constitutive equation is calibrated using data obtained from laboratory experiments, and then its predictions are validated against independent experimental data. It is shown that the proposed model is capable of predicting mechanical response of aged asphalt concrete specimens subjected to different loading conditions.
