Book excerpt: The Lie Became Great explores the closed society of international plunderers and forgers which thrives as a subculture of the Art World. These multi-cultural denizens include antiquity dealers, collectors, museum curators, forgers working in conjunction with auction houses, museums and galleries. Forgeries are made to be sold, and a great number pass into the Art World - collections, exhibitions, catalogues, and popular and scholarly journals - complete with their fabricated stories of excavation, and how they were found. The Lie Became Great documents the success and activities of one small corner of this vast network - artifacts form the Ancient Near East - with hundreds of detailed catalogue entries of forgeries. The participants in this society gain money, prestige, power, position as they distort and irretrievably damage the true story of our cultural heritage. STYX PUBLICATIONS

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume derive from the proceedings of the nineteenth International Bronze Congress, held at the Getty Center and Villa in October 2015 in connection with the exhibition Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World. The study of large-scale ancient bronzes has long focused on aspects of technology and production. Analytical work of materials, processes, and techniques has significantly enriched our understanding of the medium. Most recently, the restoration history of bronzes has established itself as a distinct area of investigation. How does this scholarship bear on the understanding of bronzes within the wider history of ancient art? How do these technical data relate to our ideas of styles and development? How has the material itself affected ancient and modern perceptions of form, value, and status of works of art? www.getty.edu/publications/artistryinbronze

Paul Getty Museum's groundbreaking 1999 exhibition, Adriaen de Vries: Imperial Sculptor, which firmly established the artist's reputation and afforded a rare opportunity to study in depth a large group of bronzes. This heavily illustrated volume presents the results of the technical study of twenty-five bronzes from the exhibition. Introductory chapters provide background on the artist and technical methodologies. Subsequent chapters present case studies of individual statues, revealing the methods and materials used in their creation"--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosperity generally brings with it a desire for luxury, which finds its expression in man's endeavour to surround himself with objects of beauty. Artists of all kinds are always being attracted to the centres of wealth, which thus develop into centres of art. We observe this through the whole of history; in antiquity, in the Middle Ages and, above all, during the Renaissance in Italy, where the many States and cities vied with each other in fostering cultural life, where palaces, castles and churches were built and decorated by the greatest artists as a result of the liberality of the art-loving princes, whose example was followed by the nobility and the rich merchants. North of the Alps, it was mainly France that came into the foreground in this field. The Duc de Berry was one of the greatest patrons of art of all times. His brother Philip, Duke of Burgundy, and his successors made of their court, which frequently resided in the Southern Netherlands, a centre of culture. Under the Hapsburgs the tradition was con tinued. The Northern Netherlands, which also gradually came to be part of the Burgundian realm (Holland since 1433), at first lagged behind as far as cultural life was concerned, but little by little they caught up with their southern contemporaries. An important factor in the development of the Netherlands was their geographical po sition, which predestined them to become a great commercial centre.

Book excerpt: Aftercast is published in the context of the research and exhibition project the humility of plaster (2016-2018), initiated by Florian Roithmayr as a new partnership between the Museum of Classical Archaeology and Kettle's Yard at the University of Cambridge, and Wysing Arts Centre. Moulding and casting are widely used techniques in modern and contemporary art making. Their use and application can be found in many other areas of production and material transformation not immediately associated with art practices, and in times before casting became an acceptable form of sculptural production in its own right. Plaster as a material remains the same: its inherent properties and qualities don't change. Moulding and casting are ancient techniques of giving and taking form and shape to objects and sculptures, and they continue to do so. And yet the way casts are symbolized, the way meaning and values are attributed to these works cast in plaster, has often shifted. Aftercast includes texts by Agnieszka Gratza and Alexander Massouras and was designed by Sara De Bondt, printed by Albe de Coker and is published by Tenderbooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed account of authenticity in the visual arts from the Paleolithic to the postmodern. The restoration of works of art can alter the perception of authenticity and may result in the creation of fakes and forgeries. These interactions set the stage for the subject of this book, which initially examines the conservation perspective, then continues with a detailed discussion of notions of authenticity and philosophical background. There is a disputed territory between those who view the present-day cult of authenticity as fundamentally flawed and those who have analyzed its impact upon different cultural milieus, operating across performative, contested, and fragmented ground. The book discusses several case studies where the ideas of conceptual authenticity, aesthetic authenticity, and material authenticity can be incorporated into an informative discourse about art from the ancient to the contemporary, illuminating concerns relating to restoration and art forgery.
