Book Synopsis Globalization and Transformations of Local Socioeconomic Practices by : Ulrike Schuerkens
Download or read book Globalization and Transformations of Local Socioeconomic Practices written by Ulrike Schuerkens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative volume provides a comprehensive overview of the transformation of socio-economic practices in the global economy. The contributors offer analytical and comparative insights at the world level, with regard to the current socio-economic practices as well as an assessment of the overall economic globalization phenomenon in the global world. Through empirical case studies of different civilizations or cultures that describe situations of intertwining of local socio-economic practices and global economic modernity, this volume assesses the overall situation in the world, looking at the world as an economic system where some countries act as winners, others as losers and some as both winners and losers of economic globalization. This exceptional book will appeal to sociologists, social and cultural anthropologists, and economists interested in development.
Book Synopsis Housing as Governance by : Astrid Ley
Download or read book Housing as Governance written by Astrid Ley and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamic roles and linkages of public sector institutions and civil society actors in housing provision for the urban poor in South Africa. Based on actor-centred and network theories, two cases of civil society alliances are analysed. The book reveals that existing civil society structures are hybrids that can oscillate between networks and organisations. Moreover, they establish informal governance spaces with state actors outside the institutional channels provided by government. The emergence of oscillating structures and the informalisation of horizontal governance represent new challenges for local decision-making processes. Co-operation and action-oriented approaches in housing seemingly need to be based on a more detailed understanding of the complex interfaces, which go far beyond the conventional ideal of partnerships and participation between sectors.

Book Synopsis Negotiating the Boundary by : Matthias Mohr
Download or read book Negotiating the Boundary written by Matthias Mohr and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1994, the year South Africa experienced her first democratic elections, the country was notorious for its ruthless apartheid policy and its violent political climate. By then, the antagonism between the recently unbanned black political parties had reached its pathetic peak. Among those who had to bear the impact of intimidation, violence and murder were the Zulu Zionists. Being part of the African Independent Churches, Zulu Zionists have always been apolitical and against any form of violence. Yet, how were they able to uphold their religious principals and ideals in a time where being impartial meant to sympathise with the political adversary? During 22 months of fieldwork, the author observed how Zulu Zionists in the township of Kwa Mashu, Durban, "walked the tightrope" in order to maintain their identity as apolitical and peace loving christians. This thesis is an excellent account based upon able, meticulous and very difficult field research and upon deep scholarly knowledge.

The contributors came from different disciplines - agriculture, law, geography, political science, and included academicians as well as development practitioners and examined the problems posed by structural adjustment, changing attitudes towards land and the deteriorationg position of pastoralists and agropastoralists. The collection presents a synopsis of the current debate about the future of rural Tanzania where economic, social, ethnic, political and legal themes are intricately intertwined. defneu#1#1 The present volume contains the papers presented at a symposium held in June 1994 which examined the challenges which rural Tanzania faced in the early 1990s. The symposium was held unter the auspices of the Special Research Programme ""Identity in Africa"" of the University of Bayreuth. The contributors included academicians as well as development practitioners who came from different disciplines - agriculture, law, geography, and political science. They examined problems arising from structural adjustment, changing attitudes to land, and from the deteriorating situation of the pastorialists and agropastoralists. The papers presented in this volume thus constitute a contribution to the current debate about the future of rural Tanzania in which economic, social, ethnic, political, and legal themes are intricately interwined.
