Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how parenting styles influence African American children and adolescents’ academic success. The theory guiding this study was Diana Baumrind’s parenting typologies authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles. A sample size of 10 African American participants who had at least one child, 3 months to 18 years of age, were recruited and selected through purposeful and snowball sampling. Each participant was interviewed via recorded Zoom meetings and data were collected utilizing open-ended, semistructured, in-depth interview questions. Three research questions guided this study: (a) what response is given that characterizes parents’ relations with their children at home in relation to their academic achievement? (b) regarding scholastic performance, which PS do African American parents exhibit at home most frequently, and (c) what initiatives may be applied in the school systems to help bridge the educational gap for children from minority groups, particularly, African American pupils? The data were analyzed to form themes and subthemes using the grounded theory method. The study findings revealed that authoritative parenting style was the participants’ primary parenting style of interaction. This research offered practical implications for teachers, parents, school officials, and law enforcement. Five emerging themes (autonomy, literacy builders/literacy enrichment, generational parenting differences/generational parenting similarities, parental academic quality time, and school quality) and six subthemes were derived from the study.

Reginald M. Clark contends, however, that such structural characteristics of families neither predict nor explain the wide variation in academic achievement among children. He emphasizes instead the total family life, stating that the most important indicators of academic potential are embedded in family culture. To support his contentions, Clark offers ten intimate portraits of Black families in Chicago. Visiting the homes of poor one- and two-parent families of high and low achievers, Clark made detailed observations on the quality of home life, noting how family habits and interactions affect school success and what characteristics of family life provide children with "school survival skills," a complex of behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge that are the essential elements in academic success. The content of the book comes from discovering actual parental practices used by minority families whose children excel at school. Our research teams went to public schools in minority neighborhoods in New York City and Long Island to find high-achieving minority children. We then visited their families and interviewed the parents and children separately to uncover what the parents did to warrant such high achievement. It is these minority parents who are the instructors in this book. We have talked with them, wrote down their stories, and extracted the parental practices that we call kernels. Kernels are seeds in the plant world. The kernels on an ear of corn are the seeds needed to grow the next generation of corn. We use this term in the sense that each parental practice that we highlight in this book should be viewed as a seed for a childs academic growth. Our research teams highlight ninety-six kernels and embed many more practices in the text that bolster academic achievement. It is a resource that minority parents can use to give their children the opportunities that result from an emphasis on academics. The book is also designed for educators to use in their everyday interactions with minority and nonminority parents.

From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to discover the characteristics of African American parental behavior regarding the importance of school, and its influence on their high school children’s academic success in a rural school district, for recent African American graduates in Mountain County, North Carolina. The research study utilized a collective case study approach and included five African American parents and, their children that had graduated from Mountain County High School and gained college acceptance. Guided by Ecological Theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), and Risk and Resilience Theory (Catalano, Hawkins, 1996), data collection methods included interviews, document analysis and, focus groups. Methods of analysis included thick description, categorical aggregation, pattern checking, and coding. After data collection and coding, the following themes were developed: “woke”, parental expectations, parental friendship, pursuing future dreams, and parental encouragement. The study concluded that the behavioral characteristics of African America parents provided protective and promotive environment for their children. Recommendations for further research included case studies that examine different geographic regions that were part of the focus of this study or phenomenological studies that can exam African American parental behavior as a behavioral response to environmental conditions, utilizing risk and resilience theory as part of the theoretical frame work.
