However, most of the research focuses on eating disorders among Caucasian American women. African-American females, on the other hand are perceived positively in the literature in regards to self-concept and body image. In addition, the African-American subculture has historically shown greater tolerance for larger sized women than the dominant culture. Although, African-American women appear to show a healthy self-image, researchers neglect to focus on the psychological and emotional ramifications of being assimilated into the White dominant society, where thinness is widespread. African-American females are often torn between the Black subculture which states that "thickness" is a prized asset, and the White dominant culture that is in opposition with these beliefs. This quantitative study examines African-American females enrolled at two universities, a predominantly White university and a historically Black university. These two groups are studied in an effort to analyze body image perceptions when immersed in two separate environments. Two hundred thirty two subjects completed a general questionnaire, which included demographic information, and the Young Women's Experiences with Body Shape questionnaire (YWEBS). Factor analysis was utilized to determine statistically and psychologically meaningful underlying factor structures of body image as reported on the YWEBS. A Pearson r was performed to assess the magnitude of the relationship between the YWEBS and the demographic variables of the general questionnaire. A discriminant function analysis was utilized to determine differences in the two samples based on the YWEBS and the demographic variables of the general questionnaire. Finally, the chi-square method was utilized to determine the differences between the responses of the two samples. Results reveal support for the hypotheses of this study. The factor analysis revealed that there were meaningful underlying factor structures of body image, while the Pearson r showed that there is a significant relationship between the demographic variables of the general questionnaire and the YWEBS. The discriminant function analysis revealed that there are differences between the two samples, and the chi-square analysis showed that there were differences on at least five questions of the general questionnaire. Furthermore, contributions to the field, limitations, suggestions for future research, and the summary and implications for counseling are presented.

In this book, medical anthropologist Eric Bailey introduces and explains the self-acceptance and body image satisfaction of African Americans, and traces how that has spurred changes in industry. His book fills the void of scientific evidence to enhance the understanding of African Americans' perceptions related to body image and beauty—and is the first to document these issues from the perspective of an African American male. Most black women, for example, are of course concerned with how they look, but do not judge themselves in terms of their weight and do not believe they are valued mostly on the basis of their bodies. Black teen girls most often say being thick and curvaceous with large hips and ample thighs is seen as the most desirable body shape. Thus, there appears to be a wider range of acceptable body shapes and weights, and a more flexible standard of attractiveness, among black Americans as compared to whites. That fact is not lost on leaders of industries that might profit from understanding this wider range of beauty, as well as playing to it. Voluptuous supermodel Tyra Banks is just one African American who's broken the mold in that industry. The effects have been seen right down to department and local clothes stores, where lines of larger and plus-size fashions are expanding, becoming more colorful and more ornate. In the fitness industry, health gurus Madonna Grimes and Billy Blanks have been revolutionizing how people get fit and how fitness needs to be redeveloped for the African American population. Advertising has taken a similar turn, not the least manifestation of which were the major campaigns Dove and Nike ran in 2005 with plus-sized actresses (who continue to appear in promotions for both companies). In movies and on television shows, the African American beautiful body image has followed suit. It is a study done heuristically. The study is designed to explore personal experiences of body images as viewed by African-American women. This question derived from my own personal experience and it also used the experiences of eight other African-American women. All of the women are different ages, shapes, sizes, and complexions. An overview of literature included books, journals, and other theses enhanced my research. The themes that emerged from this study produced a deeper understanding of personal knowledge. These themes include gaining awareness of one's own body image, relating body image to one's individual and cultural self, and understanding the awareness of one's own body image. The basis of this research is also significant because the results have implications for further study. Not only can this study be related to African-American women, it can be applied to women of any background. We live in a world where images are inescapable. For many women, accepting their images are inescapablr. For many women, accepting their image is a key component in accepting themselves. This study is also ideal for aiding young girls to gain knowledge and understanding concerning their own body image experience. Shedding light on this phenomenon, could promote a smoother transition from adolescence to young adulthood. This information can also enable therapists to more actively and effectively work with clients. Because body images issues work effectively with a more diverse body of clientele. This study is uniquely important because it describes a full body experience as it solely relates to African-American women. It is my desire that African-American women will celebrate their individual differences by acknowledging and accepting them as their own.

Specifically, this study examined how Black women define beauty by means of variables such as body shape, skin complexion, and hair texture; whether African American women ages 18-30 compared themselves to media images; and if so, did comparison to these media images impact African American women's body satisfaction. In addition, this study explored if African American women felt pressure to adopt beauty standards attributed to the dominant culture, as well as the role of racial identity in forming beauty standards and social comparison behavior. Twelve African American women were interviewed and findings of this exploratory research illustrated that the Black community has different standards than the traditional beauty standards of the U.S. Even though interviewees articulated standards of beauty for women in the Black community, there was a lack of uniformity in how these women felt about their own attractiveness: some identified with the Black beauty standards, while others did not. In addition, opinions varied regarding Black women's engagement in social comparison behavior and whether it was related to racial identity or body satisfaction. Limitations of study included: how Black women define social comparison behavior and racial identity, self-identification of participants, and the lack of Caucasian women included in this study. However, this research still provided rich data exploring Black women's perceptions of beauty among other issues within the Black community. Future research is required to better understand influences shaping standards of beauty within this subculture of the United States and recommendations are provided in the last chapter.
