Book excerpt: A nonlinear least squares algorithm for aircraft parameter estimation from flight data was developed. The postulated model for the analysis represented longitudinal, short period motion of an aircraft. The corresponding aerodynamic model equations included indicial functions (unsteady terms) and conventional stability and control derivatives. The indicial functions were modeled as simple exponential functions. The estimation procedure was applied in five examples. Four of the examples used simulated and flight data from small amplitude maneuvers to the F-18 HARV and X-31A aircraft. In the fifth example a rapid, large amplitude maneuver of the X-31 drop model was analyzed. From data analysis of small amplitude maneuvers ft was found that the model with conventional stability and control derivatives was adequate. This Special Issue covers recent computational efforts on simulation of aerospace vehicles including fighter aircraft, rotorcraft, propeller driven vehicles, unmanned vehicle, projectiles, and air drop configurations. The complex flow physics of these configurations pose significant challenges in CFD modeling. Some of these challenges include prediction of vortical flows and shock waves, rapid maneuvering aircraft with fast moving control surfaces, and interactions between propellers and wing, fluid and structure, boundary layer and shock waves. Additional topic of interest in this Special Issue is the use of CFD tools in aircraft design and flight mechanics. The problem with these applications is the computational cost involved, particularly if this is viewed as a brute-force calculation of vehicle’s aerodynamics through its flight envelope. To make progress in routinely using of CFD in aircraft design, methods based on sampling, model updating and system identification should be considered.

Book excerpt: Summary: Flight tests were made at high speeds with a P-47D airplane to determine the flow characteristics, as indicated by wool tufts, on a section of the upper surface of the wing. The behavior of the tufts, which were distributed over a section of the wing from 39.5 to 52.5 percent semispan, was determined from motion pictures. The tests were made in straight flight and in turns under conditions in which airplane lift coefficients from 0.10 to 0.54 and airplane Mach numbers from 0.58 to 0.78 were obtained. The results of the tests indicated that the flow remained smooth over the test panel until the critical Mach number of the panel was exceeded by 0.08 at a lift coefficient of 0.10 and by 0.05 at a lift coefficient of 0.50. Beyond these Mach numbers, the tufts indicated unsteadiness of flow and, finally, local separation when the Mach number exceeded the critical value by 0.13 at a lift coefficient of 0.10 and by 0.10 at a lift coefficient of 0.50. The region of separated flow originated in the neighborhood of 30 percent chord at high lift coefficients and 45 percent chord at low lift coefficients. Separation appeared to extend over not more than 15 percent chord.

Book excerpt: Applications of CFD methods to determine the regimes of applicability of nonlinear models describing the unsteady aerodynamic responses to aircraft flight motions are described. The potential advantages of computational methods over experimental methods are discussed and the concepts underlying mathematical modeling are reviewed. The economic and conceptual advantages of the modeling procedure over coupled, simultaneous solutions of the gasdynamic equations and the vehicle's kinematic equations of motion are discussed. The modeling approach, when valid, eliminates the need for costly repetitive computation of flowfield solutions. For the test cases considered, the aerodynamic modeling approach is shown to be valid.
