Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice to a Young Woman at Service: In a Letter From a Friend When I first heard that you had come to town, in order to go to service, I was exceedingly anxious for you. For several nights my sleep was disturbed, by thinking of the temptations to which you were expos ed among strangers in a great city. Your sister call ed yesterday, on her way home, and told me that you -had got into a respectable tamily. This good news relieved my mind very much; but still my-thoughts dwell upon the trials that every day will bring with it; for'you have left your native village, your pious parents, your snug and quiet home, and have placed yourself in a situation where every thing is new: you will therefore have other temptations to resist, and other exertions to make, than have ever been requir ed of you before. M y age and long experience, and especially my friendship for your mother, entitle me to some of your regard. I know that your disposition is good, and that you are ready to listen to advice. I have therefore determined, as I cannot conveniently come to you, to write you a letter; it will be a long one, and will cost me a good deal of pains, for I do not often write letters. I shall not expect you to read and destroy it, nor to lay it away in a drawer where it will not be seen; but keep it where you may fre quently look at its contents, and always remember that it was written by one who has lived many years, and experienced many changes, and can 'now say in her old age, that she has never been so happy as when she most nearly conformed to the rules which she now gives to you. But the sun has set on the golden age of exploration, and the records of these fearless, mustachioed adventurers have vanished from the shelves. In their place have appeared timorous travel guides written by authors who could hardly locate Rhodesia on a classroom globe let alone comment on the proper etiquette of an Italian duel. Now, with the publication of Vic Darkwood's How to Make Friends and Oppress People, at long last today's aspiring adventurers can avail themselves of the best of classic travel advice on such invaluable topics as: -Using Anthills as Ovens -Hunting Elephants and Hippos with a Javelin -Sleeping on a Billiard Table as a Means of Avoiding Vermin -Digging a Well with a Pointy Stick Fully illustrated with over 150 drawings and woodcuts, this inestimable collection of wisdom drawn from actual 19th- and early 20th-century guidebooks will prove essential to any traveler looking to enjoy his excursion abroad or hoping to avoid death at the hands of inhospitable natives.

"For never-resting time leads summer on To hideous winter, and confounds him there: Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone, Beauty o'ersnowed and bareness everywhere: Then were not summer's distillation left A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass, Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft, Now it nor no remembrance what it was, But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet Leese but their show, their substance still lives sweet." A Book of Friendship is an attempt to collect some of these "flowers distilled" from the world's literature. As the generations pass, friends are separated. But theirs are expressions of feeling that are imperishable. The "substance still lives sweet." It is pleasant not only to know what wise men have thought about friendship, but how friendly souls have actually felt. There must be a vast variety in the incidents of friendships and a unity in its essential nature. No abstract or philosophical description can satisfy us in regard to an intimate personal experience which we all have felt. I can imagine a warm-hearted friend reading Emerson's Essay on Friendship, and wondering what it is all about.
