Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus is the embodiment of what God means for our world. The gospel writers who penned the first four books of the Christian scriptures have given us a variety of insights into who Jesus was and is, and why he matters for contemporary humankind. Every thoughtful person defines the world according to him- or her-self. This series of sermons aims to present 'the world according to Jesus.' It is hoped that clergy tasked with proclaiming the good news of Jesus, and who follow the three-year lectionary cycle of gospel texts, will find the cycle B gospel sermons of The World According to Jesus: Twelve Sermons for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany as useful starting points for creative preaching. This will easily lighten the load for any pastor on the go during the busy season of Advent, when the holidays are in full-swing. Book Synopsis Something is about to Happen by : Thomas G. Long
Download or read book Something is about to Happen written by Thomas G. Long and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously published under the title Shepherds and Bathrobes, this series of model sermons for Advent/Christmas includes such topics as John the Baptist's preaching in the wilderness, the Word made flesh, and a sound and light show on the mountaintop. Long's sermons demonstrate how preaching can be more like watching a movie than listening to a collection of ideas. They abound in a rich variety of fresh images and stories which flesh out the familiar passages and prepare both preachers and listeners for incarnational celebrations of Advent and Christmas. Wade P. Huie, Jr. Professor of Homiletics Emeritus Columbia Theological Seminary Decatur, Georgia The title says it: these are earthy sermons in which a believable voice tells our human story, recites our literature and drama, reports the news that is our daily lot, and does all this with a sharp eye for the Bible's images, a keen ear for the Tradition's youthful voices. A fine example of preaching. Charles L. Rice Professor of Homiletics Drew University Theological School Madison, New Jersey Thomas G. Long is Francis Landey Patton Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the author of many books and is one of the most well-known teachers of preachers in America.

Book Synopsis Living Between the Advents by : Michael L. Ruffin
Download or read book Living Between the Advents written by Michael L. Ruffin and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we prepare each year to celebrate the Incarnation, the Advent season reminds us that we live in an interim period between the First and Second Comings of Jesus Christ. In this book of twelve riveting sermons on a variety of Advent themes (all based on texts from Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary), Michael Ruffin explores the challenges of Christian living in this time between the First and Second Advents -- particularly the tension between the modes of patience and action. Though we await Jesus' return with hopeful anticipation, Advent waiting is active waiting. Ruffin's messages invite readers to share in the richly rewarding life of faith, while providing abundant comfort and inspiration for those who endeavor to live as disciples of Jesus in the modern world. Preachers looking for an imaginative illustration or observation to stimulate their sermons will find ample material in this book. But this is much more than just a reference for ministers preparing to preach during Advent -- it's also an excellent resource for spiritual reflections reminding us that the good news in these days between the Advents is that Jesus Christ is Immanuel, God with us. Possessed by an abiding love for the Lord Christ, Michael Ruffin approaches a season that he loves with his scholarly skills of exegesis, his insight into contemporary life issues, his common sense, and his disarming humor, crafting a collection of sermons that will bless the reader, inspire the preacher, and remind us all of the renewal that Advent brings. James C. Elder Jr. Pastor, First Baptist Church Fitzgerald, Georgia Michael L. Ruffin is the pastor of The First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia. He is a graduate of Mercer University (B.A.) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div., Ph.D.).
