Book excerpt: This book focuses on the advanced soft computational and probabilistic methods that the authors have published over the past few years. It describes theoretical results and applications, and discusses how various uncertainty measures – probability, plausibility and belief measures – can be treated in a unified way. It also examines approximations of four notable probability distributions (Weibull, exponential, logistic and normal) using a unified probability distribution function, and presents a fuzzy arithmetic-based time series model that provides an easy-to-use forecasting technique. Lastly, it proposes flexible fuzzy numbers for Likert scale-based evaluations. Featuring methods that can be successfully applied in a variety of areas, including engineering, economics, biology and the medical sciences, the book offers useful guidelines for practitioners and researchers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception by Professor Lotfi Zadeh about 18 years ago, the theory of fuzzy sets has evolved in many directions, and is finding applications in a wide variety of fields in which the phenomena under study are too complex or too ill-defined to be analyzed by conventional techniques. Thus, by providing a basis for a systematic approach to approximate reasoning and inexact inference, the theory of fuzzy sets may well have a substantial impact on scientific methodology in the years ahead, particularly in the realms of psychology, economics, engineering, law, medicine, decision-analysis, information retrieval, and artificial intelli gence. This volume consists of 24 selected papers invited by the editor, Professor Paul P. Wang. These papers cover the theory and applications of fuzzy sets, almost equal in number. We are very fortunate to have Professor A. Kaufmann to contribute an overview paper of the advances in fuzzy sets. One special feature of this volume is the strong participation of Chinese researchers in this area. The fact is that Chinese mathematicians, scientists and engineers have made important contributions to the theory and applications of fuzzy sets through the past decade. However, not until the visit of Professor A. Kaufmann to China in 1974 and again in 1980, did the Western World become fully aware of the important work of Chinese researchers. Now, Professor Paul Wang has initiated the effort to document these important contributions in this volume to expose them to the western researchers.

The original data for this processing comes from measurements or from experts, and both sources are subject to uncertainty. Traditionally, probabilistic methods have been used to process uncertainty. However, in many practical situations, we do not know the corresponding probabilities: in measurements, we often only know the upper bound on the measurement errors; this is known as interval uncertainty. In turn, expert estimates often include imprecise (fuzzy) words from natural language such as "small"; this is known as fuzzy uncertainty. In this book, leading specialists on interval, fuzzy, probabilistic uncertainty and their combination describe state-of-the-art developments in their research areas. Accordingly, the book offers a valuable guide for researchers and practitioners interested in data processing under uncertainty, and an introduction to the latest trends and techniques in this area, suitable for graduate students.

Book excerpt: In probability and statistics we often have to estimate probabilities and parameters in probability distributions using a random sample. Instead of using a point estimate calculated from the data we propose using fuzzy numbers which are constructed from a set of confidence intervals. In probability calculations we apply constrained fuzzy arithmetic because probabilities must add to one. Fuzzy random variables have fuzzy distributions. A fuzzy normal random variable has the normal distribution with fuzzy number mean and variance. Applications are to queuing theory, Markov chains, inventory control, decision theory and reliability theory.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy logic, which is based on the concept of fuzzy set, has enabled scientists to create models under conditions of imprecision, vagueness, or both at once. As a result, it has now found many important applications in almost all sectors of human activity, becoming a complementary feature and supporter of probability theory, which is suitable for modelling situations of uncertainty derived from randomness. Fuzzy mathematics has also significantly developed at the theoretical level, providing important insights into branches of traditional mathematics like algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, and more. With such widespread applications, fuzzy sets and logic are an important area of focus in mathematics. The Handbook of Research on Advances and Applications of Fuzzy Sets and Logic studies recent theoretical advances of fuzzy sets and numbers, fuzzy systems, fuzzy logic and their generalizations, extensions, and more. This book also explores the applications of fuzzy sets and logic applied to science, technology, and everyday life to further provide research on the subject. This book is ideal for mathematicians, physicists, computer specialists, engineers, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students who are looking to learn more about fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, and their applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world we live in is pervaded with uncertainty and imprecision. Is it likely to rain this afternoon? Should I take an umbrella with me? Will I be able to find parking near the campus? Should I go by bus? Such simple questions are a c- mon occurrence in our daily lives. Less simple examples: What is the probability that the price of oil will rise sharply in the near future? Should I buy Chevron stock? What are the chances that a bailout of GM, Ford and Chrysler will not s- ceed? What will be the consequences? Note that the examples in question involve both uncertainty and imprecision. In the real world, this is the norm rather than exception. There is a deep-seated tradition in science of employing probability theory, and only probability theory, to deal with uncertainty and imprecision. The mon- oly of probability theory came to an end when fuzzy logic made its debut. H- ever, this is by no means a widely accepted view. The belief persists, especially within the probability community, that probability theory is all that is needed to deal with uncertainty. To quote a prominent Bayesian, Professor Dennis Lindley, “The only satisfactory description of uncertainty is probability.

Book excerpt: Mainly focusing on processing uncertainty, this book presents state-of-the-art techniques and demonstrates their use in applications to econometrics and other areas. Processing uncertainty is essential, considering that computers – which help us understand real-life processes and make better decisions based on that understanding – get their information from measurements or from expert estimates, neither of which is ever 100% accurate. Measurement uncertainty is usually described using probabilistic techniques, while uncertainty in expert estimates is often described using fuzzy techniques. Therefore, it is important to master both techniques for processing data. This book is highly recommended for researchers and students interested in the latest results and challenges in uncertainty, as well as practitioners who want to learn how to use the corresponding state-of-the-art techniques.

Book excerpt: This book presents a variety of recently developed methods for generating fuzzy rules from data with the help of neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. Special efforts have been put on dealing with knowledge incorporation into neural and evolutionary systems and knowledge extraction from data with the help of fuzzy logic. On the one hand, knowledge that is understandable to human beings can be extracted from data using evolutionary and learning methods by maintaining the interpretability of the generated fuzzy rules. On the other hand, a priori knowledge like expert knowledge and human preferences can be incorporated into evolution and learning, taking advantage of the knowledge representation capability of fuzzy rule systems and fuzzy preference models. Several engineering application examples in the fields of intelligent vehicle systems, process modeling and control and robotics are presented.

Book excerpt: This book introduces fuzzy set theory to social science researchers. Fuzzy sets are categories with blurred boundaries. With classical sets, objects are either in the set or not, but objects can belong partially to more than one fuzzy set at a time. Many concepts in the social sciences have this characteristic, and fuzzy set theory provides methods for systematically dealing with them. A primary reason for not going beyond programmatic statements and rather unsophisticated uses of fuzzy set theory has been the lack of practical methods for combining fuzzy set concepts with statistical methods. This monograph takes that topic as its major focus, and provides explicit guides for researchers who would like to harness fuzzy set concepts while being able to make statistical inferences and test their models. Real examples and data-sets from several disciplines illustrate the techniques and applications, demonstrating how a combination of fuzzy sets and statistics enable researchers to analyze their data in new ways.
