Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the finalized versions of the papers presented at the third Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware. The diversity of the contributions reflects the widening range of options for graphics hardware that can be exploited due to the constant evolution of VLSI and software technologies. The first part of the book deals with the algorithmic aspects of graphics systems in a hardware-oriented context. Topics are: VLSI design strategies, data distribution for ray-tracing, the advantages of point-driven image generation with respect to VLSI implementation, use of memory and ease of parallelization, ray-tracing, and image reconstruction. The second part is on specific hardware, on content addressable memories and voxel-based systems. The third part addresses parallel systems: massively parallel object-based architectures, two systems in which image generated by individual rendering systems are composited, a transputer-based parallel display processor.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers representing a comprehensive record of the contributions to the fifth workshop at EG '90 in Lausanne. The Eurographics hardware workshops have now become an established forum for the exchange of information about the latest developments in this field of growing importance. The first workshop took place during EG '86 in Lisbon. All participants considered this to be a very rewarding event to be repeated at future EG conferences. This view was reinforced at the EG '87 Hardware Workshop in Amsterdam and firmly established the need for such a colloquium in this specialist area within the annual EG conference. The third EG Hardware Workshop took place in Nice in 1988 and the fourth in Hamburg at EG '89. The first part of the book is devoted to rendering machines. The papers in this part address techniques for accelerating the rendering of images and efficient ways of improv ing their quality. The second part on ray tracing describes algorithms and architectures for producing photorealistic images, with emphasis on ways of reducing the time for this computationally intensive task. The third part on visualization systems covers a num ber of topics, including voxel-based systems, radiosity, animation and special rendering techniques. The contributions show that there is flourishing activity in the development of new algorithmic and architectural ideas and, in particular, in absorbing the impact of VLSI technology. The increasing diversity of applications encourage new solutions, and graphics hardware has become a research area of high activity and importance.

Book excerpt: EUROGRAPHICS workshops on Graphics hardware have now become an established forum for an exchange of information con cerning the latest developments in this field of growing importance. The first workshop took place during EG'86 in Lisbon. All parti cipants in this event considered it a very rewarding workshop to be repeated at future EG conferences. This view was reinforced at the EG'87 Hardware Workshop in Amsterdam which firmly esta blished the need for and a high interest in such a colloquium of technical discussion in this specialist area within the annual EG conference. The third EG Hardware Workshop took place in Nice in 1988 and this volume is a record of the fourth workshop at EG'89 in Hamburg. The material in this book contains papers representing a com prehensive record of the contributions to the 1989 workshop. The first part considers Algorithms and Architectures of graphics systems. These papers discuss the broader issues of system design, without necessarily raising issues concerning the details of the implementation. The second part on Systems describes hardware solutions and realisations of machines dedicated to graphics processing. Many of these contributions make important references to algorithmic and architectural issues as well, but there is now a greater emphasis on realisation. Indeed many VLSI designs are described.

Book excerpt: The latest developments in rendering, visualization, and rasterization hardware are reported in this volume, which contains revised versions of thecontributions to the Sixth Eurographics Workshop on Graphics Hardware, held in Vienna in September 1991 in conjunction with the Eurographics '91 Conference. The book has five parts and a keynote paper, "Issues and Directions for Graphics Hardware Accelerators", by Kurt Akeley. The first part of the book concerns graphics hardware design, including simulation and silicon compilers. The second part contains two papers on graphics systems. The third part focuses on volume (voxel-based) machines, describing two devices to facilitate transformations of volumes. The fourth part includes papers on rasterization systems, including character rasterization and scan-conversion of triangular faces. The papers in the last part of the book focus on rendering machines. They include a programmable rendering engine, primitive shaders, and radiosity implementation on a parallel architecture.

Book excerpt: The Blaubeuren Conference "Theory and Practice of Geometric Modeling" has become a meeting place for leading experts from industrial and academic research institutions, CAD system developers and experienced users to exchange new ideas and to discuss new concepts and future directions in geometric modeling. The relaxed and calm atmosphere of the Heinrich-Fabri-Institute in Blaubeuren provides the appropriate environment for profound and engaged discussions that are not equally possible on other occasions. Real problems from current industrial projects as well as theoretical issues are addressed on a high scientific level. This book is the result of the lectures and discussions during the conference which took place from October 14th to 18th, 1996. The contents is structured in 4 parts: Mathematical Tools Representations Systems Automated Assembly. The editors express their sincere appreciation to the contributing authors, and to the members of the program committee for their cooperation, the careful reviewing and their active participation that made the conference and this book a success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 7th International Confer ence of the Computer Graphics Society, CG International '89, held at the University of Leeds, UK, June 27-30, 1989. Since 1982 this confer ence has continued to attract high-quality research papers in all aspects of computer graphics and its applications. Originally the conference was held in Japan (1982-1987), but in 1988 was held in Geneva, Switzerland. Future conferences are planned for Singapore in 1990, USA in 1991, Japan in 1992, and Canada in 1993. Recent developments in computer graphics have concentrated on the following: greater sophistication of image generation techniques; advances in hardware and emphasis on the exploitation of parallelism, integration of robotics and AI techniques for animation, greater integ ration of CAD and CAM in CIM, use of powerful computer graphics techniques to represent complex physical processes (visualization), advances in computational geometry and in the representation and modelling of complex physical and mathematical objects, and improved tools and methods for HC!. These trends and advances are reflected in this present volume. A number of papers deal with important research aspects in many of these areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth issue in the EurographicSeminars Series. This series has been set up by Eurographics, the European Association for Computer Graphics, in order to disseminate surveys and research results out of the field of Computer Graphics. Computer Graphics constitute a powerful and versatile tool for various application areas. The rapidly increasing use of Computer Graphics techniques and systems in many areas is caused by the availability of more powerful hardware at lower prices,' by the concise specification of Computer Graphics Interfaces in commonly·.agreed standards, and by the inven tion of new and often astonishing methods and algorithms for com position andpreserit~ti6n of pictJres and for graphical interaction. While s,o~e issues of this se.ries contain latest research results, e.g. the issues in window management systems or user interface manage ment systems, this book has the character of a state-of-the-art survey on important areas .of Computer Graphics. Starting from current practice and agreed consens, it will lead to the latest achievements in this field. The contributions in this issue are largely based on tutorials and seminars held at the Eurographics conferences 1984 in Copen hagen and 1985 in Nice.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its very existence as a separate field within computer science, computer graphics had to make extensive use of non-trivial mathematics, for example, projective geometry, solid modelling, and approximation theory. This interplay of mathematics and computer science is exciting, but also makes it difficult for students and researchers to assimilate or maintain a view of the necessary mathematics. The possibilities offered by an interdisciplinary approach are still not fully utilized. This book gives a selection of contributions to a workshop held near Genoa, Italy, in October 1991, where a group of mathematicians and computer scientists gathered to explore ways of extending the cooperation between mathematics and computer graphics.
