Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time students of mathematics and students of science or engineering took the same courses in mathematical analysis beyond calculus. Now it is common to separate" advanced mathematics for science and engi neering" from what might be called "advanced mathematical analysis for mathematicians." It seems to me both useful and timely to attempt a reconciliation. The separation between kinds of courses has unhealthy effects. Mathe matics students reverse the historical development of analysis, learning the unifying abstractions first and the examples later (if ever). Science students learn the examples as taught generations ago, missing modern insights. A choice between encountering Fourier series as a minor instance of the repre sentation theory of Banach algebras, and encountering Fourier series in isolation and developed in an ad hoc manner, is no choice at all. It is easy to recognize these problems, but less easy to counter the legiti mate pressures which have led to a separation. Modern mathematics has broadened our perspectives by abstraction and bold generalization, while developing techniques which can treat classical theories in a definitive way. On the other hand, the applier of mathematics has continued to need a variety of definite tools and has not had the time to acquire the broadest and most definitive grasp-to learn necessary and sufficient conditions when simple sufficient conditions will serve, or to learn the general framework encompass ing different examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guided tour of the mathematical principles inherent in music. Taking a "music first" approach, Gareth E. Roberts's From Music to Mathematics will inspire students to learn important, interesting, and at times advanced mathematics. Ranging from a discussion of the geometric sequences and series found in the rhythmic structure of music to the phase-shifting techniques of composer Steve Reich, the musical concepts and examples in the book motivate a deeper study of mathematics. Comprehensive and clearly written, From Music to Mathematics is designed to appeal to readers without specialized knowledge of mathematics or music. Students are taught the relevant concepts from music theory (notation, scales, intervals, the circle of fifths, tonality, etc.), with the pertinent mathematics developed alongside the related musical topic. The mathematics advances in level of difficulty from calculating with fractions, to manipulating trigonometric formulas, to constructing group multiplication tables and proving a number is irrational. Topics discussed in the book include • Rhythm • Introductory music theory • The science of sound • Tuning and temperament • Symmetry in music • The Bartók controversy • Change ringing • Twelve-tone music • Mathematical modern music • The Hemachandra–Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio • Magic squares • Phase shifting Featuring numerous musical excerpts, including several from jazz and popular music, each topic is presented in a clear and in-depth fashion. Sample problems are included as part of the exposition, with carefully written solutions provided to assist the reader. The book also contains more than 200 exercises designed to help develop students' analytical skills and reinforce the material in the text. From the first chapter through the last, readers eager to learn more about the connections between mathematics and music will find a comprehensive textbook designed to satisfy their natural curiosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling is both a skill and an art and must be practiced in order to maintain and enhance the ability to use those skills. Though the topics covered in this book are the typical topics of most mathematical modeling courses, this book is best used for individuals or groups who have already taken an introductory mathematical modeling course. Advanced Mathematical Modeling with Technology will be of interest to instructors and students offering courses focused on discrete modeling or modeling for decision making. Each chapter begins with a problem to motivate the reader. The problem tells "what" the issue is or problem that needs to be solved. In each chapter, the authors apply the principles of mathematical modeling to that problem and present the steps in obtaining a model. The key focus is the mathematical model and the technology is presented as a method to solve that model or perform sensitivity analysis. We have selected , where applicable to the content because of their wide accessibility. The authors utilize technology to build, compute, or implement the model and then analyze the it. Features: MAPLE©, Excel©, and R© to support the mathematical modeling process. Excel templates, macros, and programs are available upon request from authors. Maple templates and example solution are also available. Includes coverage of mathematical programming. The power and limitations of simulations is covered. Introduces multi-attribute decision making (MADM) and game theory for solving problems. The book provides an overview to the decision maker of the wide range of applications of quantitative approaches to aid in the decision making process, and present a framework for decision making. Table of Contents 1. Perfect Partners: Mathematical Modeling and Technology 2. Review of Modeling with Discrete Dynamical Systems and Modeling Systems of DDS 3. Modeling with Differential Equations 4. Modeling System of Ordinary Differential Equation 5. Regression and Advanced Regression Methods and Models 6. Linear, Integer and Mixed Integer Programming 7.
