Book excerpt: The sun tower concept of collecting solar energy in space and beaming it down for commercial use will require very affordable in-space as well as earth-to-orbit transportation. Advanced electric propulsion using a 200 kW power and propulsion system added to the sun tower nodes can provide a factor of two reduction in the required number of launch vehicles when compared to in-space cryogenic chemical systems. In addition, the total time required to launch and deliver the complete sun tower system is of the same order of magnitude using high power electric propulsion or cryogenic chemical propulsion: around one year. Advanced electric propulsion can also be used to minimize the stationkeeping propulsion system mass for this unique space platform. 50 to 100 kW class Hall, ion, magnetoplasmadynamic, and pulsed inductive thrusters are compared. High power Hall thruster technology provides the best mix of launches saved and shortest ground to Geosynchronous Earth Orbital Environment (GEO) delivery time of all the systems, including chemical. More detailed studies comparing launch vehicle costs, transfer operations costs, and propulsion system costs and complexities must be made to down-select a technology. The concept of adding electric propulsion to the sun tower nodes was compared to a concept using re-useable electric propulsion tugs for Low Earth Orbital Environment (LEO) to GEO transfer. While the tug concept would reduce the total number of required propulsion systems, more launchers and notably longer LEO to GEO and complete sun tower ground to GEO times would be required. The tugs would also need more complex, longer life propulsion systems and the ability to dock with sun tower nodes. This book provides an up-to-date overview of all kinds of propulsion systems ranging from classical rocket technology, nuclear propulsion to electric propulsion systems, and further to micro-, propellantless and even breakthrough propulsion, which is a new program under development at NASA. The author shows the limitations of the present concepts and how they could look like in the future. Starting from historical developments, the reader is taken on a journey showing the amazing technology that has been put on hold for decades to be rediscovered in the near future for questions like how we can even reach other stars within a human lifetime. The author is actively involved in advanced propulsion research and contributes with his own experience to many of the presented topics. The book is written for anyone who is interested in how space travel can be revolutionized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics, Volume 9: Electric Propulsion Development covers the proceedings of the Second Electric Propulsion Conference of the American Rocker Society, held in Berkeley, California on March 14-16, 1962. The conference focuses on the existing problems in electric propulsion and their possible solutions. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 35 chapters. The first section deals with the thermodynamics of arcs; the problems of heat and momentum transfer; the chemical processes within arcs; the arc system materials; and the arc jet design problems. The second section considers the problems of ion systems, the various ion sources, and the neutralization of ion beams. This section also looks into the basic ionization processes, the production and charging of heavy particles, the corrosive properties of cesium, and the ion-optical designs. The third section describes various plasma systems, including helical transmission lines, pulsed pinch accelerators, coaxial systems, and j x B accelerators. The theoretical analyses of these systems are briefly examined. The fourth section includes papers on flight testing of electric propulsion models, on vertical rocket probes, and on satellites, This section also discusses some advanced concepts in electric propulsion, such as air scooping during ascent through the atmosphere, systems design and optimization, and planetary and interplanetary missions. This book is of great value to physicists, space engineers and designers, as well as researchers in the fields of astronautics and aeronautics.

Book excerpt: What Is Space Based Solar Power The notion of space-based solar power refers to the gathering of solar energy in outer space by solar power satellites (SPS) and the subsequent transmission of that energy to Earth. Outside of the atmosphere, sunlight is able to shine for longer periods of time and is brighter overall. Solar power systems that are stationed in space are able to transform sunlight into another kind of energy that is then able to be sent via the atmosphere to receivers located on the surface of the earth. Those who are looking for answers on a massive scale to problems like anthropogenic climate change or the depletion of fossil fuels may find it appealing. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Space-based solar power Chapter 2: Spacecraft propulsion Chapter 3: Space colonization Chapter 4: Solar sail Chapter 5: Beam-powered propulsion Chapter 6: Starwisp Chapter 7: Lightcraft Chapter 8: Rectenna Chapter 9: Laser propulsion Chapter 10: Wireless power transfer Chapter 11: Chang'e 1 Chapter 12: Lunar space elevator Chapter 13: Project Echo Chapter 14: NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts Chapter 15: Lunar habitation Chapter 16: Thinned-array curse Chapter 17: LADEE Chapter 18: Stationary High Altitude Relay Platform Chapter 19: Thermal rocket Chapter 20: Lunar Flashlight Chapter 21: Queqiao relay satellite (II) Answering the public top questions about space based solar power. Book excerpt: Solar power satellites, if developed, could supply a large proportion of the world's future electrical energy requirements in a safe and pollution-free manner. However, such enormous orbiting structures, with masses of up to 100000 tonnes, can only be built and operated if suitable transportation systems are provided. This Report reviews the options available for lifting both heavy payloads and personnel to low earth orbit, and from there to geostationary orbit. It is concluded that conventional launcher technology, using liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen engines, should be adequate for the former task. The latter can best be accomplished using electric propulsion, with ion thrusters being the most suitable devices, owing to their high efficiency and advanced state of development. Environmental effects of such a transportation system are considered, and it is concluded that they should not prove to be unacceptable. (Author).
