Book excerpt: "Autonomy is an important developmental issue that occurs in different cultural contexts, but developmental research has shown that autonomy may conflict with cultural values for Latino adolescents, and it is unclear how adolescents weigh and balance these issues. Therefore, the present study aimed: 1) to use a social domain theory framework to describe how Puerto Rican teens prioritize their cultural values and autonomy desires in everyday situations in which they conflict; and 2) to examine how reasoning about such everyday situations was associated with adolescents' endorsement of cultural values and autonomy expectations as assessed using standard measures. The sample included 105 Puerto Rican urban, low socioeconomic status 13-18 year olds divided into two age groups. In semi-structured clinical interviews, participants evaluated hypothetical situations depicting conflicts between an adolescent's desire for autonomy (either a personal, friendship or dating activity) and a cultural value (family obligations or respeto). They judged and justified their choices regarding what adolescents should and would do and rated the desirability and difficulty of each choice and their associated feelings. Participants' endorsement of cultural values and autonomy expectations also were assessed on standard measures. Analyses of variance indicated that adolescents were more likely to judge that teens should than would prioritize cultural values over autonomy desires. In addition, judgments and reasoning were nuanced and depended on the type of autonomy desire and cultural value, and sometimes, by participants' age and gender. Finally, regression analyses revealed that adolescents' overall endorsement of cultural values and autonomy expectations assessed on standard measures showed some significant associations with teens' reasoning about the hypothetical everyday scenarios. This study contributes to our understanding of how Puerto Rican adolescents think about culture and autonomy by providing a detailed picture of within- and between- individual variations in judgments and reasoning. Consistent with social domain theory, results revealed that the salience of cultural values and autonomy varied depending on the specific context examined. In addition, this study revealed the importance of considering the type of judgment (prescriptive versus expected) as a source of within-individual variation in prioritization of culture and autonomy"--Pages vii-viii.
