Book Synopsis Charlotte Perriand by : Justin McGuirk
Download or read book Charlotte Perriand written by Justin McGuirk and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An affordable, concise survey on the influential modernist designer's interiors, buildings, furniture and more, from a sawtooth ski resort to sculptural chaises longues From the onset of her career, Charlotte Perriand was a maverick who believed in good design as a force for the betterment of society. Many young designers would be devastated by a rejection from Le Corbusier's studio, but when the great architect told her they had no use for a female furniture designer, Perriand only became more determined to prove her mettle as an artist. Under Le Corbusier, and long after she left his studio, Perriand's contributions to both furniture design and architecture demonstrated a unique attention to the organic artistry of nature as well as the egalitarian possibilities of the machine age. Her leftwing populist politics motivated much of her work, from modular furniture systems to major architectural projects. This monograph explores Perriand's most famous interiors, original furniture and architectural projects, as well as her never-before-seen sketchbooks, shedding new light on her creative process and place in design history. Charlotte Perriand (1903-99) experienced the first breakthrough in her career with Le Bar sous le toit, a 1927 interior design piece that predicted the elegant minimalism and utilitarian nature of her future work. Although today she is perhaps best known for her early chaise longue designs, Perriand also created the plans for a number of major buildings across Europe and contributed interior designs to Le Corbusier's Unit d'habitation. She worked in places as diverse as Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and London in her pursuit of accessible design.

The guide is for private and public authorities, and their architects and design teams – collating all valuable information into one easy to access document. Innovations outlined within the Project Compass Design Contest Guidance include: The guide clarifies the distinction between design contests and other forms of architectural competition, why open design contests are recommended, how parallel commissioning works, sortition selection (equal chance method of selection), wild card bidders, appointment of lot contracts by design contests, and appointment of framework contracts by design contest. The guidance charts recommended routes for private and public clients wishing to undertake a design contest It addresses how to mitigate the risk clients frequently perceive when young practitioners win design contests, by use of design contests with the negotiated procedure without prior publication The guide shows how public authorities can embed design contests in their procurement procedures, the benefits of this and why they should consider it Guidance is given on how to organise fully digital design contests Project Compass CIC will be developing further guidance in future for architecture and other construction industry tender procedures. As an independent agency Project Compass CIC’s role is vital in supporting those organisations which wish to adopt better practices, but don't know how.
Book Synopsis Designing the British Post-War Home by : Fiona Fisher
Download or read book Designing the British Post-War Home written by Fiona Fisher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Designing the British Post-War Home Fiona Fisher explores the development of modern domestic architecture in Britain through a detailed study of the work of the successful Surrey-based architectural practice of Kenneth Wood. Wood’s firm is representative of a geographically distinct category of post-war architectural and design practice - that of the small private practice that flourished in Britain’s expanding suburbs after the removal of wartime building restrictions. Such firms, which played an important role in the development of British domestic design, are currently under-represented within architectural histories of the period. The private house represents an important site in which new spatial, material and aesthetic parameters for modern living were defined after the Second World War. Within a British context, the architect-designed private house remained an important ‘vehicle for the investigation of architectural ideas’ by second generation modernist architects and designers. Through a series of case study houses, designed by Wood’s firm, the book reconsiders the progress of modern domestic architecture in Britain and demonstrates the ways in which architectural discourse and practice intersected with the experience, performance and representation of domestic modernity in post-war Britain.

Download or read book In the Shade written by Boonlert Hemvijitraphan and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An architect born and educated in Thailand for his first professional degree, Hemvijitraphan went on to study at the Bartlett School, University College London and started his own practice in 1993. Over the past fifteen years, through the ups and downs of the Thai economic climate, Hemvijitraphan has proved that his quiet architecture has never been silent. It says something fundamental to the place and time. Not so much in the "styles", for most of his buildings are different, but it is the art of enclosure articulation and spatial configeration that distinguishes Hemvijitraphan's architecture.
Book Synopsis Machine Hallucinations by : Matias del Campo
Download or read book Machine Hallucinations written by Matias del Campo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AI is already part of our lives even though we might not realise it. It is in our phones, filtering spam, identifying Facebook friends, and classifying our images on Instagram. It is in our homes in the form of Siri, Alexa and other AI assistants. It is in our cars and our planes. AI is literally everywhere. Artworks generated by AI have won international prizes, and have been sold at auction. But what does AI mean for the world of design? This issue of AD explores the nature of AI, and considers its potential for architecture. But this is no idle speculation. Architects have already started using AI for architectural design and fabrication. Yet – astonishingly – there has been almost no debate about AI within the discipline of architecture so far. Surely, nothing can be more important for the profession of architecture right now. The issue looks at all aspects of AI: its potential to assist architects in designing buildings so that it becomes a form of ‘augmented intelligence’; its capacity to design buildings on its own; and whether AI might open up an extraordinary new chapter in architectural design.
