Book excerpt: Addresses of the Mississippi Philosophical Association is a collection of presidential and invited addresses from the members of the Mississippi Philosophical Association (MPA). Papers date from the inception of the association in the mid-1940s and continue through 1999. The common thread in these addresses is the authors' service to or leadership in the MPA. The content and methods in the chapters are diverse, including addresses on ethics, political philosophy, history of philosophy, epistemology, aesthetics, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, and philosophical theology. Some unique features of this book are a history of the MPA, biographical sketches and photographs of each contributor, and the inclusion of the unpublished 1988 Dunbar Lectures from Millsaps College and the unpublished 1992 Akin Lecture from Mississippi College. These essays and lectures reveal the vitality of philosophy in the colleges and universities of Mississippi. As part of the special series, Histories and Addresses of Philosophical Societies in the larger Value Inquiry Book Series, this book documents - in a unique historical format - the value and vitality of a state philosophical organization. “There has been no attempt to mold these addresses into a unity; rather, the addresses offer a glimpse of the pluralistic philosophical reflection among the philosophical faculties of the private colleges and public universities in the state of Mississippi. To the surprise of some people, philosophy is alive, well, diverse, and flourishing in Mississippi!” (from the Preface).

Book excerpt: Like the first three volumes in this series, this text contains the record of leaders of this philosophical society during a decade in the 20th century. Along with the addresses delivered before the Association's meetings during the years of the Great Depression, the collection provides an image and biographical sketch of the past presidents of the three divisions of the Association who served during the period 1931-1940. Included is the first English publication of one of the lost presidents of the Western Division, Charles Bruce Vibbert. While some other works are now appearing that contain some biographical facts and brief characterizations of the lives and works of some of the past presidents of The APA, this volume and its companions in the American Philosophical Association Centennial Series presents the full array of individuals who served the organization as its presidents.

Book excerpt: The volume deals with ontological and semantical issues concerning things, facts and events. Ontology tells us about what there is, whereas semantics provides answers to how we refer to what there is. Basic ontological categories are commonly accepted along with basic linguistic types, and linguistic types are accepted as basic if and because they refer to acknowledged ontological categories. In that sense, both disciplines are concerned with structure - the structure of the world and the structure of our language. An extended introduction overviews the topic as a whole, presenting in detail its history and the main contemporary approaches and discussions. More than 20 contributions by internationally acknowledged scholars make the volume a comprehensive study of some very fundamental philosophical entities.

Book excerpt: Inaugurates an 11-volume set covering the century decade by decade and concluding with a collection of historical essays in 20th century American philosophy. Short biographical sketches and photographs are provided for the nine speakers (Frank Tilly served two years from 1900 to 1902). Probably the two most widely known names are John Dewey, writing about beliefs and realities, and William James writing about the energies of men. Others include James Edwin Creighton on the purposes of a philosophical association, Frederick James Eugene Woodbridge on the problems of metaphysics, George Thomas White Patrick on vacation, Harry Norman Gardiner on the problem of truth, and John Grier Hibben on the philosophical aspects of evolution. Supporting the addresses are a chronology of the Association, what university departments the presidents were in, and their birthplaces listed by state and country. The series celebrates the centennial of the Association. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: The American Philosophical Association was founded in 1900 to promote the exchange of ideas among philosophers, to encourage creative and scholarly activity in philosophy, to facilitate the professional work and teaching of philosophers, and to represent philosophy as a discipline. Having grown from a few hundred members to over 10,000, the American Philosophical Association is one of the largest philosophical societies in the world and the only American philosophical society not devoted to a particular school or philosophical approach. This volume contains the presidential addresses given during the first decade, including works by William James and John Dewey, along with biographies and photographs of the APA presidents, a list of their birthplaces, a chronology of the APA, a list of presidents per decade, a list of universities and colleges closely associated with each president, and name and subject indices.

Book excerpt: Since the fall of communism in 1989 Southeast Europe has been a site of far-reaching societal transformation, much of it marked by political crisis, economic upheaval, ethnic tension, and bitter war. The book comprises articles investigating the history and development of civil society in post-communist Southeast Europe. How is civil society to be grasped, what are the historical factors shaping the civil societies of the region?, what is the function of civil society in the transition to democracy and a market-economy?, and what are the prospects for the future development of the civil societies of the region in an age of globalization?, –these are just a few of the major questions addressed in this collection of articles. Many of the authors are social scientists, philosophers, and activists from the region, offering first-hand critical analysis of the state of civil society in Southeast Europe and suggesting theoretical and practical strategies for the future course of its development. The aim is to provide the reader with insight into the complex challenges that face the civil societies of the region.

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to read the totality of Camus’s oeuvre as a voyage, in which Camus approaches the fundamental questions of human existence: What is the meaning of life? Can ultimate values be grounded without metaphysical presuppositions? Can the pain of the other penetrate the thick shield of human narcissism and self-interest? Solipsism and solidarity are among the destinations Camus reaches in the course of this journey. This book is a new reading of one of the towering humanists of the twentieth century, and sheds new light on his spiritual world.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that the most forceful contribution to George Gurdjieff's world-view is Sufism, understood as the tradition of seeking truth wherever it can be found, especially at the meeting place of the world religions. Gurdjieff's masterpiece, Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, is philosophically analyzed in its use of literary devices to jolt the reader into radical transformation.
