Most of existing studies have focused on the vibration control using smart materials in the form of patches or films, and ring-type has seldom been used. There is not much research on control of cylindrical shells using tunable materials. To meet this need, the present study develops theoretical models for adaptively-passive and active control of vibration and wave propagation in cylindrical shells using smart materials. One unique characteristic of shape memory alloy (SMA), i.e., the controllable elastic modulus with respect to temperature, is adopted in adaptively-passive control of vibration; with the capability of providing line circumferential distributed control forces due to their property of piezoelectricity in piezoelectric ceramic materials (e.g., PZT), the ring-type actuators are proposed to actively control the forced vibration response. The cylindrical shells both in vacuo and filled with fluid are investigated, and two different problems are considered: one is the wave propagation and transmission, and the other is the forced vibration response from external excitation. With the controllable elastic modulus of SMA, SMA wall joint has the capability of controlling the vibration source with wide-band frequencies or with a time-varying frequency. With the solution of the characteristics of the free wave propagation from the dispersive equation, the vibration response and characteristics of reflection/transmission from incident wave are investigated by using the wave approach and the method of residues. Numerical simulation indicates that the SMA wall joint has the potential to solve the problem of pass-band, and the transmission loss is more than 20dB for all frequency ranges providing a proper temperature. This SMA wall joint is also adopted to adaptively control the forced vibration response from external excitation. Parametric study demonstrates that the SMA joint has the capability of controlling the forced vibration of the shell excited by external excitation, and increasing damping ratio in the SMA joint does not mean to improve its vibration control performance. With the property of piezoelectricity, the piezoelectric ceramic material is able to function as both sensors and actuators. With the capability to offer more control authority by providing active control line force/moment, the ring-type PZT actuator (being modeled as a line circumferential distributed control force) is adopted to actively control the vibration in cylindrical shell. The transmission loss of this active control method is obtained by using the theory of residues. Simulation results demonstrate that it is possible to achieve a vibration reduction of 20dB for the shells both in vacuo and filled with fluid by using only one control force. In summary, the present study illustrates the effectiveness and capabilities of smart materials (e.g., SMA and PZT) on control of vibration and wave propagation in cylindrical shells, and the proposed theoretical models provide better understanding of vibration and wave propagation behaviors of cylindrical shells with smart materials and can be used to guide design and analysis of smart cylindrical shell structures.

Book excerpt: Free Vibrations of Circular Cylindrical Shells deals with thin-walled structures that undergo dynamic loads application, thereby resulting in some vibrations. Part I discusses the treatment of problems associated with the propagation of plane harmonic waves in a hollow circular cylinder. In such search for solutions, the text employs the framework of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The text explains the use of tables of natural frequencies and graphs of representative mode shapes of harmonic elastic waves bounding in an infinitely long isotropic hollow cylinder. The tables are found to be useful as they can be used to check validity and provide estimates of the range of applicability of various shell theories. The purpose of the frequency equation and that of the numerical computations likewise are considered. The book includes a computer program written in the FORTRAN language to show how it is used in the computations, except in cases when H (the thickness of shell) and L (axial half of wavelength) result in extremely small values. Part II consists of related tables and graphs. Physicists, engineers, students, and researchers in advanced sciences will find this book of interest.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to develop, validate and evaluate novel active-passive hybrid adaptive structures for real-time vibration suppressions. These structures could have the advantages of both the passive (stable, low power requirement, tail-safe) and active (high performance, feedback actions) systems. Two types of smart structure configurations have been investigated and advanced: structures with enhanced active constrained layer (EACL) treatment, and structures with active-passive piezoelectric networks (APPN). Accomplishments include: (a) Robust control laws have been synthesized for APPN to compensate for uncertainties. (b) Nonlinear analysis and control methods have been developed to utilize the high authority actions of APPN. (c) The integrated EACL-APPN configuration has been analyzed, it is shown that both the narrowband and broadband controls can be achieved with such configurations (d) A detailed non-dimensional analysis on EACL performance has been developed to provide design guidelines. (e) A new hybrid constrained layer (HCL) configuration has been developed by mixing both active and passive materials to form hybrid coversheets - such a design can outperforms stems with pure active PZT coversheets.

The long wavelength, low frequency approximation is shown to be the zero order or Flugge approximation. The characteristics of the mode dispersion spectrum are investigated as a function of frequency for the first few roots for orders zero to four, including real, imaginary and complex wave numbers. The dependence of the complex and imaginary branches on shell geometric factors of thickness and radius are presented. Comparison is made to three-dimensional elasticity analysis and to Mirsky-Herrmann theory. The change from thin to thick shell behavior for the complex branch or end modes is traced. The radial displacement conditions for various end conditions of a thin cylindrical shell are given. Expressions are also given for the various shell impedances. (Author).

Book excerpt: Cylindrical shells are common structures that are often used in industry, such as pipes, ducts, aircraft fuselages, rockets, submarine pressure hulls, electric motors and generators. In many applications it is desired to attenuate the sound radiated from the vibrating structure. There are both active and passive methods to achieve this purpose. However, at low frequencies passive methods are less effective and often an excessive amount of material is needed to achieve acceptable results. There have been a number of works regarding active control methods for this type of structure. In most cases a considerable number of error sensors and secondary sources are needed. However, in practice it is much preferred to have the fewest number of error sensors and control forces possible. Most methods presented have shown considerable dependence on the error sensor location. The goal of this dissertation is to develop an active noise control method that is able to attenuate the radiated sound effectively at low frequencies using only a small number of error sensors and secondary sources, and with minimal dependence on error sensor location. The Weighted Sum of Spatial Gradients control metric has been developed both theoretically and experimentally for simply supported cylindrical shells. The method has proven to be robust with respect to error sensor location. In order to quantify the performance of the control method, the radiated sound power has been chosen. In order to calculate the radiated sound power theoretically, the radiation modes have been developed for cylindrical shells. Experimentally, the radiated sound power without and with control has been measured using the ISO 3741 standard. The results show comparable, or in some cases better, performance in comparison with other known methods. Some agreement has been observed between model and experimental results. However, there are some discrepancies due to the fact that the actual cylinder does not appear to behave as an ideal simply supported cylindrical shell.

Book excerpt: Smart laminated composite cylindrical shells are widely used in many engineering applications such as aerospace, mechanical, civil, and marine structures. Dynamics (wave propagation and vibration) analysis of smart laminated composite shell structures plays an important role in design and fabrication of such structures. Understanding the dynamic characteristics of composite structures can be used for detecting possible defects in a structure and monitoring its structural integrity. Proper dynamics analysis of composite cylindrical shells has significant importance in accurate determination of wave propagation and vibration characteristics. In this thesis, a set of mathematical models is developed to model wave propagation and free vibration in smart laminated composite cylindrical shells reinforced with fibers with different sizes and arrangements based on different shell theories. The resulting effective material properties for composite structures reinforced with carbon nanotubes are estimated using the Mori-Tanaka micromechanics model. The hygrothermal environmental conditions are also considered in the proposed models. Wave dispersion and free vibration analyses are performed by solving an eigenvalue problem and finding the wave phase velocities and natural frequencies for different wave and vibration modes. Through numerical simulations, the effects of various parameters such as hygrothermal environmental conditions, axial and circumferential wavenumbers, arrangement and distribution of reinforcing fibers and carbon nanotubes, stacking sequence of the laminate, shell geometry parameters, piezoelectricity, and mechanical boundary conditions on the dynamic characteristics of different composites are examined. It is concluded that the shear effects on wave dynamics of smart laminated composite cylindrical shells are much more noticeable than its effects on wave dynamics of smart isotropic cylindrical shells. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcing fibers and carbon nanotubes and their volume fraction and geometrical distribution within the structure on wave propagation characteristics are significant and must be carefully considered in the analyses of such structures. The hygrothermal environmental conditions have a moderate impact on the wave propagation and vibration characteristics. Shell geometry and boundary conditions have noticeable effects on dynamic characteristics of smart composite cylindrical shells. The theoretical and mathematical framework developed in this thesis can be used by designers and manufacturers for the analyses of structural integrity and health monitoring of smart laminated composite cylindrical shell structures. It can also be used for energy harvesting through the piezoelectric materials embedded in such structures under different environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: With progress in technology, the problem of protecting human-beings, ma chines and technological processes from !>Ources of vibration and impact has become of utmost importance. Traditional "classical" methods of pro tection, based upon utilising elastic passive and dissipative elements, turn out to be inefficient in many situations and can not completely satisfy the complex and often contradictory claims imposed on modern vibration protection systems which must provide high performance at minimum di mensions. For these reasons, active vibration protection systems, which are actually systems of automatic control with independent power sources, are widely used nowadays. Appearing and developing active systems require that traditional ap proaches to the analysis and synthesis of vibration protection systems must be revised. Firstly, there exists the necessity to re-state the problem of vi bration protection from mechanical actions as an equivalent problem in closed-loop control systems design, which is to be solved by the methods of control theory. Furthermore, it turns out that certain inherent proper ties of active systems must be taken into account for a proper design. In the majority of cases, the dynamic models of the objects to be protected and the bases to which these objects are to be attached must be revised. They are no longer considered as rigid bodies but elastic bodies with weak dissipation.
