Most of the new standards like HSPA utilize the spatial multiplexing of MIMO channels to achieve higher data rates, and exploit the diversity of MIMO channels to provide better performance. Hence there is an increased interest in the analysis of MIMO communication systems. The eventual objective is to achieve higher data rates in MIMO systems under the constraints of limited bandwidth and power. The radio spectrum is a scarce resource, and very expensive to license. Hence improved and efficient channel utilization techniques are requisite, that exploit the radio spectrum more proficiently. The multipath characteristics of the environment cause the MIMO channels to be frequency selective. For frequency selective deep fading, MIMO system remains ineffective. OFDM, a multicarrier transmission scheme, is well recognized for its potential for attaining high rate transmission over frequency selective channels. It can transform such a frequency selective MIMO channel into a set of parallel frequency-flat channels. Implementing space resources based on OFDM i.e., MIMO-OFDM provides higher data rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive filtering is useful in any application where the signals or the modeled system vary over time. The configuration of the system and, in particular, the position where the adaptive processor is placed generate different areas or application fields such as: prediction, system identification and modeling, equalization, cancellation of interference, etc. which are very important in many disciplines such as control systems, communications, signal processing, acoustics, voice, sound and image, etc. The book consists of noise and echo cancellation, medical applications, communications systems and others hardly joined by their heterogeneity. Each application is a case study with rigor that shows weakness/strength of the method used, assesses its suitability and suggests new forms and areas of use. The problems are becoming increasingly complex and applications must be adapted to solve them. The adaptive filters have proven to be useful in these environments of multiple input/output, variant-time behaviors, and long and complex transfer functions effectively, but fundamentally they still have to evolve. This book is a demonstration of this and a small illustration of everything that is to come.

Book excerpt: Wireless communications has witnessed a tremendous growth during the past decade and further spectacular enabling technology advances are expected in an effort to render ubiquitous wireless connectivity a reality. Currently, a technical in-depth book on this subject is unavailable, which has a similar detailed exposure of OFDM, MIMO-OFDM and MC-CDMA. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context. Divided into three main parts: Part I provides a detailed exposure of OFDM designed for employment in various applications Part II is another design alternative applicable in the context of OFDM systems where the channel quality fluctuations observed are averaged out with the aid of frequency-domain spreading codes, which leads to the concept of MC-CDMA Part III discusses how to employ multiple antennas at the base station for the sake of supporting multiple users in the uplink By providing an all-encompassing self-contained treatment this volume will appeal to a wide readership, as it is both an easy-reading textbook and a high-level research monograph.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) techniques and Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques have gained more and more interest in the last a few years. But there are still many key problems to be solved in OFDM and MIMO, including synchronization, channel estimation, and adaptive modulation. Channel estimation is the research target in this paper. In this thesis, we introduce an optimal Pilot-Aided Channel Estimation (PACE) algorithm. It works in Non Line of Sight (NLOS) environments with low Bit Error Rate (BER) and its computation cost is relatively small.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we consider wideband extensions of narrowband signal processing techniques for MIMO wireless transceivers. The extensions are applied and analyzed on commonly used wideband systems such as W-CDMA and OFDM. We focus on signal processing techniques for channel estimation and correction, including pilot-aided and decision-directed LMS-based adaptive estimation. Simulation study compares cases with one and two transmit/receive antennas and shows that BER of W-CDMA system consistently improves by exploiting multi-path diversity through additional antenna at the receiver, while additional transmit antenna is beneficial under specific channel conditions. BER performance in OFDM is more sensitive to the value of the channel's smallest eigen-value than to the eigen-spread. In most practical cases, therefore, the sub-channels with small eigen-values are not usable due to poor BER.

Book excerpt: In a bid to cope with challenges of increasing demand for higher data rate, better quality of service, and higher network capacity, there is a migration from Single Input Single Output (SISO) antenna technology to a more promising Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology. On the other hand, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has emerged as a very popular multi-carrier modulation technique, thus it is considered as a promising solution to enhance the data rate of future broadband wireless communication systems. The first contribution of this thesis is the development of a low complexity adaptive algorithm that is robust against slow and fast fading channel scenarios, in comparison to the conventional individual parameter estimation by E. Teletar in his famous paper of 1999. Implementing the Adaptive MMSE Receivers in MIMO OFDM systems which I refer to (AMUD MIMO OFDM), combines the adaptive minimum mean square error multiuser receiver's scheme with prior information of the channel and interference cancelation in the spatial domain, achieves enhanced joint channel estimation and signal detection which makes the new technique effectively mobile. A mathematical analysis and simulation results to estimate the Information Capacity of Mobile Communication system with MMSE DFE and OFDM receivers were investigated. The capacity of a stationary channel with ISI is achievable by both the single carrier MMSE DFE and multicarrier modulation over narrow sub channels with OFDM receivers. The achieved capacity result shows that in both techniques single carrier and multicarrier, apart from different implementations are essentially identical when it comes to achievable criteria for information channel capacity. Lastly, AMUD MIMO OFDM were compared with both adaptive vector pre-coding and iterative system and their performance were fantastic, results shows that it will assure transmission over a high channel capacity.

Book excerpt: Systems which utilize multiple input-multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO OFDM) for current and emerging wireless standards benefit from its advantages in terms of resource adaptation, simplicity in equalization, and rate and reliability improvement. Realizing most of these advantages will require channel state information (CSI). Thus, reliable CSI acquisition is crucial which is typically accomplished by transmitting pilots. MIMO OFDM pilot designs have been studied, but advances in technology have caused new considerations for designing these reference signals. In-phase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalances, practical device imperfections whose impacts are more pronounced as semiconductor technology moves towards smaller scale, can have a significant impact on CSI estimation performance. Some works have addressed pilot designs considering I/Q imbalance but not in an optimal fashion in terms of estimation performance and pilot overhead. We propose new pilot designs for MIMO OFDM systems with frequency dependent and independent I/Q imbalances that meet optimal pilot conditions which we derive to maintain optimal estimation performance while minimizing overhead. Another emerging concept is the use of relay and multi-point to multi-point (MP-MP) systems for transmission of signals. How these are incorporated into the communication system will significantly affect CSI acquisition algorithms, and previous works have limited scopes. We provide pilot designs, channel estimators, and CSI acquisition/sharing algorithms for many various relay and MP-MP transmission strategies which use minimal overhead while maintaining nearly optimal estimation performance. Additionally, we present a new adaptive relay transmission scheme which utilizes an initial CSI estimate of a time varying channel to switch between relays, transmit antennas, subbands, and MIMO transmission modes to enhance reliability of the relay link. For this adaptive scheme we implement temporal power and bit loading for the cascaded source-relay-destination link with/without inter-hop power allocation to further enhance the performance. The simulation results demonstrate an improved performance in the overall bit error rate (BER) and throughput.
