Book excerpt: This autobiography is not a story of a few great men and women, but ordinary men and women who struggled to survive during the Great Depression and World War II. Their stories are our version of the gossip-filled and wonder-working and sometimes doom-laden careers of god and goddesses of Homer. The book traces, through the Genesis of the Adams family and after that, both the immense changes that have occurred in the 20th and the start of the 21st Century but also the difference in our conception of greatness itself.

However, such presentations as "Gone with the Wind" often ignore the evil of slavery and the times of complex political and social realities. The antebellum period came to an end with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. In "Gone with the Wind,"we visit a fictional family of the early pre-Civil War days in the Old South. However, in this writing, we see non-fictional families who migrated to and lived in the Old South. We follow their descendants who never achieved fame on the movie screen but were important in early American history..

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."Professor Louis Adams grew up near Chillicothe, Ohio during the Great Depression and World War II. After graduation from Southeastern high school he served in the U.S. Navy with his two brothers. Naval service during the 1960's and the Cold War years, took him and his family to Morocco--- a country of many contrasts and at a time of new challenges. Culture shock was part of this new adventure. His medical duties were varied and included working with the Moroccan Ministry of Health conducting epidemiological studies, enteric diseases monitoring, and the training of Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) as laboratory technicians. The author returned to Morocco as the Director of two groups of PCV Lab Techs who were stationed in hospitals and clinics throughout the country to fill a void left by the exodus of French health care workers after Moroccan Independence in 1956. The overall success of the program was marginal due to many factors: limited number of well-trained medical technologists, demands for additional lab tests overwhelmed AB generalists, lab bench work too mundane, work lacked opulence, provided limited self-gratification, and impeded cross-culture exchange and social interaction, loyalty to work ethics was limited, and social revolution occurring in the 1960's accentuated the character flaws and immaturity of some PCVs. Cities like Tangier, Tetouan, and Marrakesh in the 1960's provided adventure, deception, intrigue, mystery, and high-octane thrills that attracted expatriates, writers, poets, exotic travelers, and PCVs who got caught up in the drug scene.

Book excerpt: About this Book: Dating back to the dawn of American independence, Moroccan and American relations are among the strongest, richest, and most diverse relations binding two different nations together for hundreds of years. Despite the volatility of the international political scene in the modern era, these relations have remained stable, giving a stunning example of solid bilateral cooperation. The Moorish empire - shrunk through different historical processes to what is known today as Morocco - was the leading power in North Africa and a major player on the international scene for centuries. Its territory once stretched over the Maghreb and the Iberian Peninsula into France, especially during the reign of the Almoravid's dynasty in the 11th century (1). Its political influence on the world was enormous not only because of its powerful army and control over the sea, but also because of its strategic location at the crossroads between Africa, Europe, America, and Asia. When America was in an arduous struggle for independence from Britain, Morocco was the first country to recognize the still-contentious independence of the United States by decree of Sultan Mohamed Ben Abdallah in December 1777. Morocco also immediately granted the American ships permission to "come and traffic freely in Moroccan ports in like manner as they formerly did under the English flag.[2]

Book excerpt: An absorbing, insightful profile of the revolutionary leader, president, husband, and father from one of our best historians, now in a beautiful new package. John Adams was unique among the nation’s founders in leaving a record of his most intimate thoughts and feelings. Instinctively candid and politically incisive, Adams offers the clearest view of the ambitions and principles that drove the revolutionary generation. Passionate Sage offers a brilliant introduction to the second president: his politics, his affinities for family and friendship even with political opponents like Jefferson, and his enduring significance. “Ellis’s palpable affection lends a pleasing glow to his profile of Adams, which is why Passionate Sage is his best book.”—Judith Shulevitz, New York Times Book Review “Impassioned and erudite. . . . A captivating portrait of this Massachusetts native as a wonderfully contrary genius possessed of an uncommon moral intelligence and farsighted political wisdom.”—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times “The best portrait of a Revolutionary-era statesman.”—Evan Thomas, Wall Street Journal

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning, bestselling biography of America’s founding father and second president that was the basis for the acclaimed HBO series, brilliantly told by master historian David McCullough. In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as “out of his senses”; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the moving love stories in American history. This is history on a grand scale—a book about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, John Adams is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.
