"This is not reverent, definitive history. This is a tactician’s bible." --Parul Sehgal, The New York Times Twenty years in the making, Sarah Schulman's Let the Record Show is the most comprehensive political history ever assembled of ACT UP and American AIDS activism In just six years, ACT UP, New York, a broad and unlikely coalition of activists from all races, genders, sexualities, and backgrounds, changed the world. Armed with rancor, desperation, intelligence, and creativity, it took on the AIDS crisis with an indefatigable, ingenious, and multifaceted attack on the corporations, institutions, governments, and individuals who stood in the way of AIDS treatment for all. They stormed the FDA and NIH in Washington, DC, and started needle exchange programs in New York; they took over Grand Central Terminal and fought to change the legal definition of AIDS to include women; they transformed the American insurance industry, weaponized art and advertising to push their agenda, and battled—and beat—The New York Times, the Catholic Church, and the pharmaceutical industry. Their activism, in its complex and intersectional power, transformed the lives of people with AIDS and the bigoted society that had abandoned them. Based on more than two hundred interviews with ACT UP members and rich with lessons for today’s activists, Let the Record Show is a revelatory exploration—and long-overdue reassessment—of the coalition’s inner workings, conflicts, achievements, and ultimate fracture. Schulman, one of the most revered queer writers and thinkers of her generation, explores the how and the why, examining, with her characteristic rigor and bite, how a group of desperate outcasts changed America forever, and in the process created a livable future for generations of people across the world.
Book Synopsis Humanitarian Intervention by : Aleksandar Jokic
Download or read book Humanitarian Intervention written by Aleksandar Jokic and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-02-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law makes it explicit that states shall not intervene militarily or otherwise in the affairs of other states; it is a central principle of the charter of the United Nations. But international law also provides an exception; when a conflict within a state poses a threat to international peace, military intervention by the UN may be warranted. (Indeed, the UN Charter provides for an international police force, though nothing has ever come of this provision). The Charter and other UN documents also assert that human rights are to be protected — but in the past the responsibility for the protection of human rights has for the most part been allowed to rest on the government of the state where the violation of rights occurs. Not surprisingly in this context, the question of what protection (if any) should be provided by the UN or otherwise to individuals when their human rights are violated by their governments or with the complicity of their governments remains a contentious issue. Should the principle of respect for state sovereignty trump the principle of respect for human rights? Historically it has been allowed to do so, but recently it has been more and more widely argued that when states fail to respect the human rights of their citizens (or of others who reside within their boundaries), they may be held accountable for their actions. Is military humanitarian intervention justifiable? And if so, under what circumstances? Those are the questions addressed in this collection of essays. The focus of the volume is on the abstract principles involved; though reference is sometimes made to specific cases, the essays here consist primarily of philosophical reflection on the abstract issues. (A companion volume on the specific issues surrounding a particular case, Lessons of Kosovo, is being published simultaneously.)

Book Synopsis Humanitarian Intervention by : Sean D. Murphy
Download or read book Humanitarian Intervention written by Sean D. Murphy and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1996-11-29 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries, societies have gradually developed constraints on the use of armed force in the conduct of foreign relations. The crowning achievement of these efforts occurred in the midtwentieth century with the general acceptance among the states of the world that the use of military force for territorial expansion was unacceptable. A central challenge for the twenty-first century rests in reconciling these constraints with the increasing desire to protect innocent persons from human rights deprivations that often take place during civil war or result from persecution by autocratic governments. Humanitarian Intervention is a detailed look at the historical development of constraints on the use of force and at incidents of humanitarian intervention prior to, during, and after the Cold War.
Book Synopsis Crisis Intervention Handbook by : Kenneth Yeager
Download or read book Crisis Intervention Handbook written by Kenneth Yeager and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fewer concepts in American society have received more attention recently than the need for skilled crisis intervention. Images of crises inundate internet and newspaper headlines, television screens and mobile devices. As a result of the growing amount of acute crisis events portrayed in the media that impact the lives of the general public, interest in crisis intervention, response teams, management, and stabilization has grown tremendously. Skills and methods to effectively manage acute crisis situations are in high demand. While many claim to understand the rapidly growing demand for effective crisis management, few provide clearly outlined step-by-step processes to educate and guide health and mental health professionals. This is a thorough revision of the first complete and authoritative handbook that prepares the crisis counselor for rapid assessment and timely crisis intervention in the 21st century. Expanded and fully updated, the Crisis Intervention Handbook: Assessment, Treatment, and Research, Fourth Edition focuses on crisis intervention services for persons who are victims of natural disasters, school-based and home-based violence, violent crimes, and personal or family crises. It applies a unifying model of crisis intervention, making it appropriate for front-line crisis workers-clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatric-mental health nurses, and graduate students who need to know the latest steps and methods for intervening effectively with persons in acute crisis.

Book Synopsis Cardiovascular Catheterization and Intervention by : Debabrata Mukherjee
Download or read book Cardiovascular Catheterization and Intervention written by Debabrata Mukherjee and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of invasive and interventional cardiology is dynamic with frequent advances in both technique and technology. An internationally-renowned team of editors and over 100 contributors have shaped this textbook to provide clinicians with a thorough guide that covers the procedural and peri-procedural aspects of coronary, peripheral, and structural heart disease diagnostics and interventions. This comprehensive and highly illustrated textbook presents critical information for anyone active in the field of cardiovascular interventions, including: Practical suggestions on how to set up a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, choose the right equipment and minimize radiation exposure. A careful analysis of the general principles of percutaneous coronary interventions, the specific knowledge needed in different clinical scenarios, as well as the patient selection criteria for each invasive procedure. In-depth coverage of non-coronary interventions, including 13 chapters on peripheral vascular interventions, including carotid artery stenting, as well as newer procedures for intracranial stenosis treatment, septal defect repair, and left atrial appendage closure. An incorporation of emerging procedures in structural heart disease, such as percutaneous aortic valve replacement and mitral valve repair—that although not presently mainstream, will likely become an important domain of interventional cardiologists. Given the importance of appropriate training and credentialing for clinicians, the textbook also includes current national guidelines and policies on the performance of the various procedures.
Book Synopsis International Intervention in a Secular Age by : Audra Mitchell
Download or read book International Intervention in a Secular Age written by Audra Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International intervention is not just about ‘saving’ human lives: it is also an attempt to secure humanity’s place in the universe. This book explores the Western secular beliefs that underpin contemporary practices of intervention—most importantly, beliefs about life, death and the dominance of humanity. These beliefs shape a wide range of practices: the idea that human beings should intervene when human lives are at stake; analyses of violence and harm; practices of intervention and peace-building; and logics of killing and letting die. Ironically, however, the Western secular desire to ensure the meaningfulness of human life at all costs contributes to processes of dehumanization, undercutting the basic goals of intervention. To explore this paradox, International Intervention in a Secular Age engages with examples from around the world, and draws on interdisciplinary sources: anthropologies of secularity and IR, posthumanist political philosophy, ontology and the sociology of death. This book offers new insight into perennial problems, such as the reluctance of intervenors to incur fatalities, and international inaction in the face of escalating violence. It also exposes new dilemmas, such as the dehumanizing effects of quantifying casualties, Western secular logics of killing, and the appropriation of lives and deaths through peace-building processes. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, political philosophy, international ethics and social anthropology.
