This project was carried out jointly by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Boeing Phantom Works, and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center. At NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, the technology was flight tested on a modified McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. Active Aeroelastic Wing Technology is a technology that blends the aerodynamics, controls, and structure of a wing in order to harness and regulate the aeroelastic twist that a wing experiences under dynamic stresses and high speeds. The use of multiple leading and trailing edge controls, such as "aerodynamic tabs," enables subtle amounts of aeroelastic twist to be controlled to provide large amounts of wing control power, while simultaneously minimizing maneuver air loads under high wing strain conditions or aerodynamic drag under low wing strain conditions. This is accomplished while maintaining a balance between the two extremes of wing strain conditions. This operation served as the very first demonstration of AAW technology on a large scale.
