Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems of Love, Struggle, and Change By: Merredith F. Perkins Ph.D. If someone had said to her twenty-five years ago that she would be living the life she’s living, Merredith F. Perkins, Ph.D. would have questioned his or her sanity. She would have been an ardent disbeliever. The fortune of writing was bestowed upon her a long time ago, but she did not know that twenty-five years of reflective writing and her poems would show up in a book at this stage of her life. In her golden years, Dr. Perkins is writing and sharing her poetry with the public to show that we all have a lot in common and that we all stumble humbly through our life’s journey. In taking stock of her life and understanding a little bit of what her life has been for, she is learning that the puzzle pieces were being laid on a path long before she arrived at that path. Poems of Love, Struggle, and Change is a collection of poetic expressions on topics about love in relationships, struggling with expressions of self-awareness, and engaging in the friction of self-discovery as a way to gauge internal and external explorations as life unfolds.

This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The completely updated and expanded new edition of this well-established text incorporates DSM-5 changes as well as other new developments. The all-in-one guide covers the whole range of often co-existing neuro-behavioral disorders in children – from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety, to autism spectrum disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities, Tourette's, sensory integration problems, and executive dysfunction. A completely revised chapter on the autism spectrum by Tony Attwood explains not only new understanding in the field, but the new diagnostic criteria, and the anticipated usage of the term 'Asperger's Syndrome'. Dr. Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments. He presents effective behavioral strategies for responding to children who display traits of these disorders – whether at home, at school, or in other settings – along with case vignettes and practical tips. Finally, a chapter on the role of medications summarizes current knowledge. The author's sympathetic yet upbeat approach and skillful explanations of the inner world of children in the syndrome mix make this an invaluable companion for parents, teachers, professionals, and anyone else who needs fast and to-the-point advice on children with special needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the literary humanist, works of imaginative literature have an objective meaning which is fixed at the time of their production and which is the same for all readers, then and thereafter, not subject to the vagaries of individual readers' responses. Such works refer to the real world and make statements about that world which are of cognitive as well as aesthetic value; the two kinds of value are indeed intimately connected. Richard Gaskin offers a defence of literary humanism, so understood, against assault from two directions. On the one hand, some analytic aestheticians have argued that works of literature do not bear referentially on the world and do not make true statements about it; others hold that such works do not make a contribution to knowledge; others again allow that works of literature may have cognitive value, but deny that this depends on their having truth or reference. On the other hand, reception-theorists and deconstructionists have rejected the humanist's objectivist conception of literary meaning, and typically take a pragmatist and anti-realist approach to truth and meaning. This latter, poststructuralist treatment of literature has often been accompanied by a radical politicization of its study. In defending literary humanism against these various forms of attack, Gaskin shows that the reading and appreciation of literature is a cognitive activity fully on a par with scientific investigation, and that we can and should engage in it disinterestedly for the sake of what can be learnt about the world and our place in it.
