Book excerpt: The long-term goals of the "Acoustic Focusing in Shallow Water and Bubble Radiation Effects" project is as follows: (1) understand the role of wave-induced bubbles in the upper ocean boundary layer on the performance of underwater communications systems and ambient noise generation, (2) study the implications of focusing by surface gravity waves on Doppler sonar and acoustic communications systems in shallow and very shallow water, and (3) study the performance of acoustic vector sensors in very shallow water. Goal 1 of this research is to measure the radiation strength of fragmenting bubbles as a function of bubble size. This research is based on the importance of ambient noise in the ocean for the operation of acoustic systems in general, and the importance of upper ocean boundary layer bubbles on the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The connection between the noise radiated by white caps and wind speed is well known, but the connection between bubble creation mechanics within white caps and noise level is not well understood. Recent advances in our understanding of the scale dependence of bubble creation mechanisms in breaking waves has raised the possibility of creating a quantitative link between ambient noise level and bubble production rates by ocean waves. Goal 2 is to measure and model the three-dimensional effects of sound focusing by shoaling surf. Wave crests focus surface reflections into high-intensity regions that propagate through the water column. These high intensity regions have a first-order impact on the performance of underwater communications systems in the surf zone. Goal 3 determines how closely the performance of an array of vector sensors deployed in an ocean environment approaches theoretical prediction; compares the performance of vector sensors with pressure sensors; and determines if any differences in performance can be related to the relevant physical properties of the water column, such as internal wave activity.

The goal was to determine the dynamics, distribution and acoustic effects of bubbles just offshore from active surf. A major component of the experiment was the "Delta Frame," an apparatus that supported two acoustic sources and eight receivers. Acoustic intensity was measured at frequencies between 39 and 244 kHz over the resulting 16 horizontal ray paths. Paths ranged in length from 2.5 to 8.6 m. In the present paper, a tomography algorithm is developed and implemented using Delta Frame data. Measurements are combined to produce quantitative cross-sectional images of the attenuation associated with the bubble cloud. Numerical simulations predict that the frame can resolve details of the field down to about 2 m. Images constructed at different acoustic frequencies are scaled and compared. A five-minute sequence of images is studied in detail. Swell waves are shown to cause rapid fluctuations in the images due to the vertical structure of the bubble cloud. At a wave trough, the bubble cloud dips into the horizontal plane probed by the Delta Frame and the attenuation increases.

Theoretical calculations are also performed using the theory developed in this thesis. Comparisons are made between theory and numerical calculations. The results presented and discussed in this thesis are related to the following issues: coherent and incoherent intensity fluctuations for adiabatic approximation, acoustic mode coupling due to IW's, transmission loss difference between adiabatic and coupled mode methods, and their dependence on range, IW amplitude and frequency.

Acoustic waves and environmental data including on-board ship radar images were collected simultaneously before, during, and after a strong internal solitary wave packet passed through a source-receiver acoustic track. Analysis of the acoustic wave signals shows temporal intensity fluctuations. These fluctuations are affected by the passing internal wave and agrees well with the theory of the horizontal refraction of acoustic wave propagation in shallow water. The intensity focusing and defocusing that occurs in a fixed source-receiver configuration while internal wave packet approaches and passes the acoustic track is addressed in this thesis. ☐ Acoustic ray-mode theory is used to explain the modal evolution of broadband acoustic waves propagating in a shallow water waveguide in the presence of internal waves. Acoustic modal behavior is obtained from the data through modal decomposition algorithms applied to data collected by a vertical line array of hydrophones. ☐ Strong interference patterns are observed in the acoustic data, whose main cause is identified as the horizontal refraction referred to as the horizontal Lloyd mirror effect. To analyze this interference pattern, combined Parabolic Equation model and Vertical-mode horizontal-ray model are utilized. A semi-analytic formula for estimating the horizontal Lloyd mirror effect is developed.
