Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference in Enschede, The Netherlands, is the sixth in a series of international conferences and workshops under the title Protocols for Multimedia Systems, abbreviated as PROMS. The first PROMS workshop took place in June 1994 in Berlin, Germany, followed by workshops in Salzburg, Austria (October 1995) and Madrid, Spain (October 1996). In 1997, PROMS formed a temporary alliance with Multimedia Networking, a conference previously held in Aizu, Japan, in 1995. This led to the international conference on Protocols for Multimedia Systems – Multimedia Networking, PROMS MmNet, that took place in Santiago, Chile (November 1997). Since then PROMS has been announced as an international conference, although informal contacts and interactive sessions – as in a workshop – were retained as a desirable feature of PROMS. After a gap of three years, PROMS was organized in Cracow, Poland (October 2000), for the fifth time. We consider it a challenge to make this sixth edition of PROMS as successful as the previous events. The goal of the PROMS series of conferences and workshops is to contribute to scientific, strategic, and practical cooperation between research institutes and industrial companies in the area of multimedia protocols. This is also the goal of PROMS 2001. The basic theme of this conference continues to be multimedia protocols, both at the network and application level, although the increasing interest in wireless, mobility, and quality of service as interrelated topics with relevance to multimedia are reflected in the current program.

Book excerpt: A multimedia system needs a mechanism to communicate with its environment, the Internet, clients, and applications. MPEG-7 provides a standard metadata format for global communication, but lacks the framework to let the various players in a system interact. MPEG-21 closes this gap by establishing an infrastructure for a distributed multimedia frame

Book excerpt: Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries exploit the power of human vision and spatial cognition to help individuals mentally organize and electronically access and manage large and complex information spaces. They draw on progress in the field of information visualization and seek to shift the users' mental load from slow reading to faster perceptual processes such as visual pattern recognition. Based on two workshops, the book presents an introductory overview as well as a closing listing of the top ten problems in the area by the volume editors. Also included are 16 thoroughly reviewed and revised full papers organized in topical sections on visual interfaces to documents, document parts, document variants, and document usage data; visual interfaces to image and video documents; visualization of knowledge domains; cartographic interfaces to digital libraries; and a general framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enabling group communication is one of the major challenges for the future Internet. Various issues ranging from services and applications to protocols and infrastructure have to be addressed. Moreover, they need to be studied from various angles and therefore involve skills in multiple areas. COST264wascreatedtocontributetothisinternationale?orttowardsgroup communication and related technologies. The European COST framework is ideal for establishing a new community of interest, providing an open forum for ideas, and also supporting young researchers in the ?eld. The COST264 action, o?cially started in late 1998, aims at leveraging the European research in this areaandcreatingintensiveinteractionattheinternationallevel.Tothispurpose, COST264 decided to organize an annual technical workshop, the “International Workshop on Networked Group Communication”. NGC’99 in Pisa is the ?rst event of the series. Despitethisbeingthe?rstworkshopanddespitetheveryshorttimebetween the Call for Papers and the deadline for submissions, and the other con?icting andmoreestablishedevents,theCallforPapersofNGC’99washighlysuccessful: we received 49 papers, of which 18 were selected to compose the basis of the technical program. We hope you will enjoy our paper selection, which is the VI Preface core of these proceedings, and addresses important issues in the research and development of networked group communication. In addition to refereed contributions, we scheduled two keynote speakers (Christophe Diot and Steve Deering), and four invited talks by Ken Birman (Cornell), Bob Briscoe (BT), Radia Perlman (SUN), Tony Speakman (CISCO).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the Proceedings of the First International Conference on Advanced Multimedia Content Processing (AMCP ’98). With the remarkable advances made in computer and communication hardware/software system technologies, we can now easily obtain large volumes of multimedia data through advanced computer networks and store and handle them in our own personal hardware. Sophisticated and integrated multimedia content processing technologies, which are essential to building a highly advanced information based society, are attracting ever increasing attention in various service areas, including broadcasting, publishing, medical treatment, entertainment, and communications. The prime concerns of these technologies are how to acquire multimedia content data from the real world, how to automatically organize and store these obtained data in databases for sharing and reuse, and how to generate and create new, attractive multimedia content using the stored data. This conference brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, in dustry, and public agencies to present and discuss recent advances in the acquisition, management, retrieval, creation, and utilization of large amounts of multimedia con tent. Artistic and innovative applications through the active use of multimedia con tent are also subjects of interest. The conference aims at covering the following par ticular areas: (1) Dynamic multimedia data modeling and intelligent structuring of content based on active, bottom up, and self organized strategies. (2) Access archi tecture, querying facilities, and distribution mechanisms for multimedia content.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the second IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (IEEE PCM 2001) held in Zhongguanchun, Beijing, China, October 22 24, 2001. Building upon the success of the inaugural IEEE PCM 2000 in Sydney in December 2000, the second PCM again brought together the researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators of multimedia in the Pacific area. Theoretical breakthroughs and practical systems were presented at this conference, thanks to the sponsorship by the IEEE Circuit and Systems Society, IEEE Signal Processing Society, China Computer Foundation, China Society of Image and Graphics, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Tsinghua University, and Microsoft Research, China. IEEE PCM 2001 featured a comprehensive program including keynote talks, regular paper presentations, posters, demos, and special sessions. We received 244 papers and accepted only 104 of them as regular papers, and 53 as poster papers. Our special session chairs, Shin'ichi Satoh and Mohan Kankanhalli, organized 6 special sessions. We acknowledge the great contribution from our program committee members and paper reviewers who spent many hours reviewing submitted papers and providing valuable comments for the authors. The conference would not have been successful without the help of so many people. We greatly appreciated the support of our honorary chairs: Prof. Sun Yuan Kung of Princeton University, Dr. Ya Qin Zhang of Microsoft Research China, and Prof.
