Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 4.0, University of Engineering & Technology Peshawar, course: Project, language: English, abstract: This study introduces the need, difficulties associated with and solutions for implementing the use of High Strength Concrete in Peshawar and challenging areas in general. It does so by using Peshawar as a case study and generalizing its characteristics to any other such regions in the world. It reviews current standard methods for making High Strength Concrete in the world and investigates those used in the target region. Then compares them to find the difficulties that stand as a hindrance in achieving High Strength Concrete in said area, naming them as challenges. It uses the PEC (Pakistan Engineering Council) contractors’ categorization to provide guidelines for each category to tackle the challenge that hinders it the most. Furthermore, it provides a set of actions for PEC to follow for a successful implementation of High Strength Concrete in the area. It also gives a review of the process for use in other challenging environments, also giving examples of such environments in Pakistan and other parts of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical book from a highly experienced author presents clearly the means and methods for designing, producing and using high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete offers many benefits. Higher compressive strengths allow for a reduction in the cross-sectional dimensions of columns and walls in buildings. Its greater stiffness allows for increasing building heights while controlling sway and occupant comfort. Civil structures such as bridges have benefited from greater span lengths, shallower beam sections, wider girder spacing, and extended service life. Illustrated with real life examples, through documented case histories, High-Strength Concrete will be a valuable resource for contractors, producers, inspection agencies, as well as engineers and researchers.

Book excerpt: No new technology is necessary to produce adequately uniform concrete with unit weights of 225 to 235 lb per cu ft and 90-day strengths of 10,000 to 12,000 psi. It is necessary to control the water-cement ratio of the concrete vigilantly, and to use efficient mixers, thorough consolidation by vibration, and forms designed to resist the pressures developed by the fresh concrete. While no new technology is required, careful adherence to every aspect of the best practices in production and control is absolutely essential. High-density aggregates that are tough, well graded, and of good particle shape are more expensive than many concrete aggregates in commercial use. In this respect they differe only in degree from many other aggregates of high quality. The single greatest cause for the difference in cost between a shield constructed with concrete of normal unit weight and one constructed of high-strength, high-density concrete like those described is the excellent construction practice and rigorous control required to achieve the high-strength, high-density concrete.

Book excerpt: Concrete made using mineral cements, the raw materials which on earth are practically endless, is known as one of the oldest building materials and during the last decades of the twentieth century has become a dominant building material for general use. At the same time, the requirements of the quality of concrete and its performance properties, in particular compressive strength, durability, economical efficiency, and low negative impact of its manufacture on the environment have not yet been completely met. Bearing these requirements in mind, researchers and engineers worldwide are working on how to satisfy these requirements. This book has been written by researchers and experts in the field and provides the state of the art on recent progress achieved on the properties of concrete, including concrete in which industrial by-products are utilized. The book is dedicated to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a rational design of concrete structures, it is necessary to know both the ascending and the descending parts of the stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to uniaxial compression. It is difficult to determine the descending part experimentally because of the interaction between the testing system and the specimen, especially for concrete of high compressive strength. The influence of the testing machine depends on the stiffness of the machine, the frequency response of the system, the length and diameter of the specimen, the strength of concrete, the rate of loading, and the inherent brittleness of the material. For a closed-loop testing machine, the specimen-machine interaction also depends on the parameter chosen to control the loading. It is shown that the descending part of the curve can be obtained by controlling the circumferential strain even when the axial strain control produces an unstable failure. A method of testing specimens at a controlled rate of circumferential strain increase is described. Stress-strain curves of concrete subjected to uniaxial compression using both the axial and the lateral strain as a control were compared for compressive strengths ranging between 70 to 90 MPa (10 000 to 13 000 psi).

Book excerpt: Environmental concerns and advances in architectural technologies have lead to a greater number of green buildings or buildings with green, eco-friendly elements. However, from a practical standpoint, there is no incident reporting system in the world that tracks data on fire incidents in green buildings. Fire safety objectives are not explicitly considered in most green rating schemes, and green design features have been associated with photovoltaic panels and roof materials, lightweight timber frame buildings, and combustible insulation materials. Fire Safety Challenges of Green Buildings is the result of an extensive global literature review that sought to identify issues related to green building elements or features and ways to ensure those issues are tracked for future improvement. The book identifies actual incidents of fires in green buildings or involving green building elements, points out issues with green building elements that would increase fire risk, clarifies reports and studies that address ways to reduce fire risk in green design elements, and compares research studies that explicitly incorporate fire safety into green building design. The authors also pinpoint gaps and specific research needs associated with understanding and addressing fire risk and hazards with green building design. Using their data, the authors developed a set of matrices relating these green attributes and potential fire hazards. With these comprehensive tools, potential mitigation strategies for addressing the relative increase in fire risk or hazard associated with the green building elements and features have been identified. Fire Safety Challenges of Green Buildings is intended for practitioners as a tool for analyzing building safety issues in green architecture and developing methods for tracking data related to green design elements and their potential hazards. Researchers working in a related field will also find the book valuable.
