Book excerpt: "The Buxheim Organ Book, the largest fifteenth-century manuscript of keyboard tablature, has never before been examined as a whole in light of musica ficta issues, although it contains far more accidentals than any contemporaneous source in mensural notation. Although tablature has been used by various scholars to examine accidentals in sixteenth-century music, studies of fifteenth-century accidentals have focussed on theoretical evidence and small groups of pieces from mensural sources. The author uses the Buxheim Organ Book to extend the investigations of accidentals in tablature back into the fifteenth century, combining the large data set provided by this manuscript with a statistical approach modelled on that of Thomas Brothers's smaller-scale study of the chansons of Binchois. Specialised computer programs are introduced, which detect musical structures relevant to the analysis of Renaissance music such as different types of cadential voice leading. These programs function as extensions to David Huron's Humdrum Toolkit. With these tools, signing practises in the intabulations are statistically compared with all of the concordances of the models. Conclusions are suggested pertaining to issues of signature accidental transmission, partial signatures, mode, and musica ficta, which can be used as a contextual backdrop for the analysis of individual pieces. The evidence provided by the accidentals in Buxheim and its concordances draws a clear picture of how a group of fifteenth-century musicians added accidentals to polyphonic music. For the first time, this study provides us with principles and guidelines for musica ficta -decisions based on actual practice." --

Book excerpt: Of the many classes of variant found among sources of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century music, accidentals were particularly vulnerable to scribal preference and thus to alteration during copying: although musicians were trained to infer unwritten inflections from notated accidentals and musical context, there existed a certain amount of leeway for different choices of inflection. In addition to changes made according to taste, accidentals might be sparingly marked where a source was intended for well-trained performers, but added by a scribe or editor where performers were unfamiliar with the style of the music in question, for example through geographical or chronological. distance. This is particularly true of the music of Machaut, whose sometimes unconventional treatment of counterpoint often presented scribes with unfamiliar situations. However, because the copying of the manuscripts of Machaut's collected works was controlled to an unusual degree, it becomes possible to compare accidentals and suggest reasons for the differences in scribal practice. More problematic are the variant readings of Machaut's chansons found in late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century anthologies, whose scribes were outside Machaut's immediate circle and could not benefit from proximity to his exemplars, or knowledge of his editing procedures. These later and more distant sources illustrate the ways in which his music was performed during the years after his death - some suggesting a concern to preserve the inflections of the Machaut manuscripts, others adding new or alternative voices which could affect or alter the contrapuntal framework of those central readings.

He was under the thumb of the Secretary of State for India, the shrewd and ambitious Third Marquess of Salisbury, during most of his four years in India. During his viceroyalty, Lytton had to deal with shifting British policies, a major famine, the freedom-loving people of Afghanistan, an entrenched civil service, and a rising generation of patriotic Indians. In the 1880 elections, Disraeli’s Conservatives were defeated by Gladstone’s Liberals, and Lytton resigned.

It is true that all divisions of history wish to incorporate all other divisions unto themselves, but in the essays of our first collection there are specific cases and analyses clearly delineated to show how technologies and systems for the production, reproduction and representation of technological changes emerged out of fundamental aspects of European society and mentality. The question must be: How far were such fundamental aspects unique (in their entirety and configuration) to Europe? The second collection on patent agency takes the modern industrialization of Europe as its focus, and illustrates the manner in which systems of intellectual property rights generated manifold agencies that acted to both spread and control the use of knowledge in advanced sites. Patent agency has been generally neglected by historians, one reason for this being the difficulty of defining effective agency beyond the obvious confines of those who were actually trained and remunerated as agents of invention. Informal networks or sites may have been crucial in converting general patent systems into local environs of technical advance.
