Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Pyrhönen's innovative study is the first comprehensive overview and analysis of the academic reception of the eternally popular detective story; the discussion, using both a chronological and thematic approach, considers the changing views, and methods of analysis, of this fascinating genre. The author begins by tracing the development of detective fiction criticism from its beginnings, often written by its best authors, such as Dorothy L. Sayers; goes on to examine the structuralists' and narratologists' interest in the genre as a test case for various theories of reading; and finally outlines the current debates about the ideological underpinnings of detective fiction and its relationship to 'serious' literature. This book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of literature, but also to the countless devotees of the detective story. DR PYRHÖNENteaches literature at the University of Helsinki in the Department of Comparative Literature and Theatre Research.

Book excerpt: ‘Excellence by the Sea’ is the strap line in Stormhaven Towers school’s publicity, but when, at the end of the summer term, the hard-drinking, hard-smoking new Headmaster, Jamie King, is found dead at the bottom of the town’s famous white cliffs, this excellence comes under savage scrutiny. Suicide is assumed at first - King wouldn’t be the first tormented soul to hit those unforgiving rocks. But unanswered questions remain. Forensics find no phone by the body and the head always had his mobile with him: ‘I wouldn’t want to be out when Eton ring!’ he used to joke. Then there is a second death at the school. With the pursuit of excellence exchanged for the pursuit of a killer who is both clever and efficient, the long dark corridors of Stormhaven Towers become an education in fear. Who will be next? Leading the investigation is the attractive and ambitious Inspector Tamsin Shah, accompanied, rather unexpectedly, by Abbot Peter, recently retired from the deserts of Middle Egypt. Known locally as ‘the odd couple’, they have worked on cases together before - surprising though that the Abbot should wish to become involved again. The ruthless Shah has brought danger to his seaside door, and through events at Stormhaven Towers, will do so again. Reviews of previous Abbot Peter mysteries, A Director’s Cut (2014), A Psychiatrist Screams (2013) and A Vicar Crucified (2013, all DLT): ‘A nicely plotted, swiftly paced yarn, full of teases . . . Parke evokes the creepiness of the setting marvellously. He has a stunning ear for the way people actually speak, with pages of uninterrupted dialogue flashing by with the speed of a radio play.’ Church Times ‘Highly original . . . very different from most detective stories.’ Clerical Detectives ‘An engrossing page-turning thriller, propelling the reader through its multiple twists and turns and keeping one guessing until the final unpredictable - yet satisfying - denouement.’ Irish Independent

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough compilation of the types, specific incidents, relevant agencies, theories, responses, and prevention programs relevant to crime and violence in schools and on campuses. Encyclopedia of School Crime and Violence is the most comprehensive reference on this deeply unsettling topic ever undertaken. No other volume integrates as much information about the many types of crime and violence occurring in schools as well as the variety of responses and prevention efforts aimed at curbing it. In a series of alphabetically organized entries, Encyclopedia of School Crime and Violence looks at significant cases both at high schools and on college campuses, with coverage that includes professional and community responses, and theories as to why these events happened. Unlike other volumes that focus only on the most sensational events, the encyclopedia spans the full spectrum of school crime—not just the high profile cases like Columbine and Virginia Tech, but the insidious problems of theft, bullying, cybercrime, violence, sexual assault, and more. Coverage includes information on some cases outside the United States, as well as entries on the government agencies and other organizations dedicated to analyzing and eradicating school crime and violence.

Book excerpt: This book is an ethnographic examination of the young people who serve voluntarily as judges, advocates and other court personnel at the Red Hook Youth Court (RHYC) in Brooklyn, New York—a juvenile diversion program designed to prevent the formal processing of juvenile offenders—usually first-time offenders—for low-level offenses (such as fare evasion, truancy, vandalism) within the juvenile justice system. Focusing on the nine-to-ten-week long unpaid training program that the young people undergo prior to becoming RHYC members, this book offers a detailed description of young people’s experiences learning about crime, delinquency, justice, and law. Combining moments of self-reflection and autobiographical elements into largely "uncooked" fieldnotes, the book seeks to demonstrate the hegemonic operations of a court (the Red Hook Community Justice Center (RHCJC)—a multi-jurisdictional problem-solving court and community center where the RHYC is housed), the processes in which it secures belief in formal justice and the rule of law, ensures consent to be governed, and reproduces existing social structures. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, law, sociology, and youth justice, as well as to those undertaking ethnographic research on young people, crime and justice.

Book excerpt: This Congressional hearing report covers testimony given to the Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life-Long Learning relating to the issue of crime on college campuses. Specifically the testimony addressed a proposed bill before the House of Representatives, the Open Campus Police Logs Act, which would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965. Testimony also addressed the effectiveness of the existing Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, which was included as part of the Student Right to Know Campus Security Act, enacted to provide reliable information to parents and students about criminal activity on college campuses. Transcripts are provided of the testimony of witnesses concerning: the effectiveness of the existing law, how the law is being administered by the Department of Education, whether schools and the Department have been abiding by both the spirit and requirements of the law, what suggestions witnesses have for further changes to the law, and views of proposed Open Campus Police Logs Act. Transcripts are included of statements offered by five concerned private individuals, two school administrators, and David Longanecker, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education. In addition to the oral testimony, prepared statements, letters, and supplementary materials are included in the report. (CH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides detailed statistical information on crime in schools. It is a companion document to the "Annual Report on School Safety: 1999," which offers an overview of the nature and scope of school crime. This report is organized as a series of indicators, with each indicator presenting data on a different aspect of school crime and safety. The report contains 4 sections: Nonfatal Student Victimization--Student Reports; Violence and Crime at School--Public School Principal/Disciplinarian Reports; Nonfatal Teacher Victimization at School--Teacher Reports; and School Environment. The report shows that even though the actual rate of victimization has declined or remained constant over recent years, students feel less safe at school now than just a few years ago. Students, ages 12 through 19, who reported avoiding one or more places at school for their own safety increased between 1989 and 1995. The presence of street gangs on school property continued to concern students, reflected by the fact that the percentage of students who reported seeing street gangs at their school increased from 1989 to 1995. Alcohol and marijuana use on school property remained constant, although marijuana use anywhere by students in grades 9 through 12 increased. Three appendices list school safety practices and policies, technical notes, and other information. (RJM)

The head of the English Department is dead, and Professor Cassandra James is appointed the task of running the department. Faced with the choice of whipping her underperforming colleagues into shape or losing the much-needed funding for the program, Cassandra resigns herself to the challenge. However, when she stumbles upon the former head's private papers and realizes that the death was no accident, Cassandra is forced to use her academic expertise of solving obscure literary puzzles for a very different purpose: tracking down a killer. British Praise for Murder is Academic: "Cambridge academic Christine Poulson's first crime novel is a triumph of suspense and intrigue. A labyrinthine plot is unravelled as intriguingly as a literary puzzle." - Bodies in the Bookshop Magazine "An intriguing read...Poulson certainly keeps the reader guessing...There is a lot to enjoy in this romp through the Cambridge commons. This is Poulson's first novel, and she creates a strong sense of place with a narrative style that is both energetic and engaging." - Sherlock Magazine "A fascinating mystery..The sense of place was very strong...This is [Poulson's] debut book, and I just hope that the next one is not too long coming." - Mystery Women
