Book excerpt: This report is based on information from the 1990-91 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Academic Libraries survey, a U.S. Department of Education vehicle for collecting data from all postsecondary institutions in the United States. The data in this report represent colleges and universities with accreditation at the higher education level as recognized by the Secretary of Education; at the national level, 87 percent of the libraries responded. The tables in the publication summarize library staff, library operating expenditures, library collections, library loan transactions, and library service per typical week for libraries in higher education institutions. Statistics are presented for the nation and state-by-state. Staff and service data are for fall 1990, while the remainder of the data cover the 1990 fiscal year (i.e., any 12-month period between July 1, 1989, and September 30, 1990, that corresponds to the institution's fiscal year). The survey form is included. (KRN)

Book Synopsis The Academic Library of the 90s by : Rashelle S. Karp
Download or read book The Academic Library of the 90s written by Rashelle S. Karp and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1994-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s have been a time of great change for academic libraries and librarians. Rapid developments in technology have revolutionized the libraries' means and mission, while declining budgets have adversely impacted the ability of librarians to carry out their roles. The literature of academic librarianship today reflects these changes and points to the direction in which academic libraries are headed. This book is a comprehensive guide to book chapters and articles written on academic librarianship between 1990 and 1993. Entries for nearly 1,700 works are grouped in six topical chapters for ease of use. Each entry includes an informative annotation that summarizes the key points made by the authors, the major findings of research projects, and the names and locations of libraries with innovative programs. Extensive author, article, book/journal title, and subject indexes conclude the work. The volume is a useful tool for locating specific information on various topics, and it is a forecast of the future of academic libraries.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1993, features the perspectives of library practitioners as well as other higher education professionals on using innovative management techniques. The book includes practical discussions of Total Quality Management, team management, the impact of gender differences, managing an older work force, and educational needs. Through this valuable book, library administrators will find the best methods for adapting management strategies to the major political upheaval, economic reprioritizing, and organizational restructuring that has been characteristic of this decade. They will benefit from the case studies and practical overview from professionals who have already experienced change in their own libraries. Some of the important topics covered by the contributors include: fostering the democratization of the workplace and the development of the staff through empowerment; proactive, assertive, and collaborative roles of libraries in the scholarly communication process; library management education that prepares professionals both to anticipate change and to bring about change in their institutions in response to societal needs and shifts; managing the academic library through teamwork; the possible impacts and implications of female leadership on the library profession; organizational change in research libraries; older workers in technical services; and using the budget as a planning tool.

Book Synopsis Academic Libraries in Urban and Metropolitan Areas by : Gerard B. McCabe
Download or read book Academic Libraries in Urban and Metropolitan Areas written by Gerard B. McCabe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1991-11-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solutions to the unique problems of academic libraries in urban and metropolitan areas are provided in this professional handbook. Issues faced by the administrators of these libraries can differ markedly from those encountered by their counterparts in residential college towns, with service demands emanating from both the surrounding community and their own academic community. Written by experienced urban university librarians, each chapter addresses issues unique to the in-city academic library. Reaching out to their communities to establish links with business, industry, and other libraries, the administrators of the urban/metropolitan libraries require a great degree of diplomacy and management skills. Service demands arising from urban high schools place additional pressures on limited resources. This handbook shows how the use of new technologies can assist the urban academic librarian in fashioning services for a nonresident faculty, as well as a usually older student body, comprised of many international and part-time students. The characteristics of city living and their impact on information-seeking behavior are discussed. Other topics covered are resource sharing, setting fees, staff and collection security, environmental pollution and space requirements.
