Book excerpt: Ability grouping is a common instructional practice in the early grades, but little is known about its effects over time. This study examined long-term academic and motivational outcomes of reading ability grouping. Using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010–11, children’s reading ability group placements in kindergarten were used to predict their reading achievement and aspects of their motivation for reading in third grade. Patterns of ability group placement from kindergarten through second grade were then identified and used to predict third-grade academic and motivational outcomes as well. Results show that both kindergarten ability group placement and placement patterns from grades K–2 predicted third-grade reading achievement. Kindergarten grouping also predicted students’ perceived competence in reading, and K–2 placement patterns predicted both perceived competence and intrinsic motivation for reading in third grade. This research has implications for reading instruction in primary grades and underscores the importance of examining children’s academic and motivational outcomes concurrently.

Book excerpt: "This two-phased study looked at the effectiveness of ability grouping children for literacy instruction at a time when current literature has mixed reviews on the concept of grouping in this manner. The Phase One participants were kindergarten-level children and the Phase Two participants were Grade 1-level children. The students were assessed at the beginning and ending of each phase, the kindergarten-level students with the locally developed Reading Group Assessment and the Grade 1-level students with the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment instrument. The DIBELS scores were compared to Prince George School District Grade One Norms. This comparison determined that the Grade 1-level students in this research made a statistically significant amount of improvement in Phoneme Segmentation Fluency and a smaller amount of improvement in Nonsense Word Fluency over their Prince George counterparts. Overall, student assessment scores indicated reading improvement. Results of this study allowed me to conclude that ability grouping children for literacy instruction was an effective strategy that should be repeated."--P. ii.

With this idea in mind, Slavin comments in the middle of his review on the effects of grouping: "there is not enough research on within-class ability grouping in reading to permit any conclusions" (Slavin, 1987, p. 320). Because of this, the question of whether "and" how to group students is often cast and answered ideologically rather than empirically. This review attempts to see if the empirical research available can answer either or both of these questions. It will contribute to the literacy field by focusing specifically on reading outcomes for classroom teachers, who instruct a wide variety of students. Informed by previous research on within-class grouping, the following three research questions guide the present study: (1) To what extent does within-class grouping impact student achievement in reading?; (2) For which grade(s) or which students is within-class grouping most or least beneficial?; and (3) Do any moderators, especially those identified by previous research (measurement source, teacher development, and grouping type), help explain this effect? All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Ability grouping has been highly debated in the educational field for years. This study aimed to test the effect of ability grouping on Hong Kong children. A between-subjects design was used to investigate whether students' achievement in English would be affected by the practice of ability grouping 102 Hong Kong primary school children studying in Primary One took part in the investigation. All participants first undertook a pre-test that determined their ability level- high, average or low. 51 Students were then grouped homogeneously (HM) according to ability level while students from another 51 students were grouped in heterogeneous (HT) ability setting. After attending two English lessons on the topic of singular/plural noun, students completed the post-test and a survey on ability grouping. It was hypothesised that ability grouping would have positive effect on average and high ability students while low ability students would benefit more from heterogeneous grouping. The not significant effect between HM and HT groups, F(1,96)=0.210, p=0.648, and between the ability levels between two groupings, F(2,96)=0.020, p=0.980, found in this study failed to support the research hypotheses. The findings tended to support the work of Oakes (1985, 1995, 2005), Oakes and Lipton (1990) and Slavin (1987). Yet, it was suggested that no conclusion on the effectiveness of grouping on student learning could be reached. Further implications and recommendations were included in this research.
