Book Synopsis Maternity Leave by : Victoria Gordon
Download or read book Maternity Leave written by Victoria Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a successful working parent? And how do working parents cope in the United States, the only developed nation with no paid parental leave requirement? Despite some positive advancement in the voluntary adoption of paid parental leave, many organizations over the past 25 years have instead decreased paid leave benefits offered to employees in the United States, choosing instead to let unpaid leave under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) serve in its place. This regression in practice is perhaps the greatest unintended consequence of FMLA and surely was not the intent of Congress. Maternity Leave: Policy and Practice, Second Edition approaches parental leave from a variety of perspectives: legal, political, social, institutional, organizational, and, most importantly, from the personal perspectives of the women and men interviewed expressly for the book. This second edition offers two new chapters: the first puts the issue of maternity leave within the context of work–life balance issues, and the second explores case studies from states, cities, and private organizations. Incorporating new census data, related reports, and academic studies, authors Victoria Gordon and Beth M. Rauhaus utilize relevant and cutting-edge research in their exploration of parental leave, and they enrich this research with the individual stories of ordinary working parents as well as those who choose not to have children. Assuming no prior specialized knowledge, this book can be assigned on a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in politics, public policy, public administration, gender studies, and human resource management, and will equally be of interest to parents, policy makers, and C-suite managers.

Book Synopsis Copyright, Fair Use, and the Challenge for Universities by : Kenneth D. Crews
Download or read book Copyright, Fair Use, and the Challenge for Universities written by Kenneth D. Crews and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-12-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent lawsuit against Kinko's Copies for copyright infringement has exposed the confusion and heightened the fear of liability surrounding copyright issues in colleges and universities. This volume offers an enlightening explanation of copyright and the ambiguous concept of fair use as they affect and are affected by higher education. In the first large-scale study of its kind, Kenneth D. Crews surveys the copyright policies of ninety-eight American research universities. His analysis reveals a variety of ways in which universities have responded to—and how they could better manage—the conflicting goals of copyright policies: avoiding infringements while promoting lawful uses that serve teaching and research. He explains in detail the background of copyright law and congressional guidelines affecting familiar uses of photocopies, videotapes, software, and reserve rooms. Crews concludes that most universities are overly conservative in their interpretation of copyright and often neglect their own interests, adding unnecessary costs and obstacles to the lawful dissemination of information. Copyright, Fair Use, and the Challenge for Universities provides administrators, instructors, lawyers, librarians, and educational leaders a much-needed exegesis of copyright and how it can better serve higher education.

Book Synopsis Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency by : Association of American Medical Colleges
Download or read book Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency written by Association of American Medical Colleges and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark publication published by the AAMC identifies a list of integrated activities to be expected of all M.D. graduates making the transition from medical school to residency. This guide delineates 13 Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) that all entering residents should be expected to perform on day 1 of residency without direct supervision regardless of specialty choice. The Core EPAs for Entering Residency are designed to be a subset of all of the graduation requirements of a medical school. Individual schools may have additional mission-specific graduation requirements, and specialties may have specific EPAs that would be required after the student has made the specialty decision but before residency matriculation. The Core EPAs may also be foundational to an EPA for any practicing physician or for specialty-specific EPAs.Update: In August 2014, the AAMC selected ten institutions to join a five-year pilot to test the implementation of the Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for Entering Residency. More than 70 institutions, representing over half of the medical schools accredited by the U.S. Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), applied to join the pilot, demonstrating the significant energy and enthusiasm towards closing the gap between expectations and performance for residents on day one. The cohort reflects the breadth and diversity of the applicant pool, and the institutions selected are intended to complement each other through the unique qualities and skills that each team and institution brings to the pilot.Faculty and Learners' Guide (69 pages) - Developing faculty: The EPA descriptions, the expected behaviors, and the vignettes are expected to serve as the foundation for faculty development. Faculty can use this guide as a reference for both feedback and assessment in pre-clinical and clinical settings.- Developing learners: Learners can also use this document to understand the core of what is expected of them by the time they graduate. The EPA descriptions themselves delineate the expectations, while the developmental progression laid out from pre-entrustable to entrustable behaviors can serve as the roadmap for achieving them.
