Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever the field of human activity-domestic or scientific, work or leisure-it is likely that some knowledge of the behaviour of electrical circuits is required to keep the processes moving, the wheels turning. In many cases, a knowledge of Ohm's law may suffice. In others, an understanding of more complex relationships may be necessary. In this book an attempt is made to provide, in a concise manner, an introduction to the main methods of treating electrical networks, whether they be carrying direct (de) or alternating (ac) electrical currents. Clearly, the range of possible circuits is vast so that the simplifications which are demonstrated in the pages that follow are of great importance to the student. However, to gain the fullest benefit from such a concise presentation, the student must devote some time to the exercises which are provided in Appendix B. The units used throughout the book are those of the International System (or SI). The various quantities which are introduced-such as current and potential and resistance-are summarized in Appendix A together with the symbols used to represent them, the unit associated with each quantity and the formula used to derive that unit from four fundamental or MKSA units.

Book excerpt: This fundamental alternating current (AC) theory book, now in its second edition, offers a user-friendly approach and practical examples to keep industry professionals up-to-date. Designed to provide a thorough introduction to AC theory from its production, to its uses and circuitry; AC Theory, 2E uses the basics of direct current theory to explain the various facets of AC theory. The book begins by covering the primary components of AC circuits, such as resistors, inductors, and capacitors. The chapters that follow build upon the basic principles learned in these chapters, gradually introducing increasingly complex topics such as applying AC principles in power generation and generators, parallel and combination circuits, and more. With updated sidebars that provide a real-world context for the topics covered, users will develop strong connections between theory and applications, preparing them for work in the electrical field.

Book excerpt: A Course in Game Theory presents the main ideas of game theory at a level suitable for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, emphasizing the theory's foundations and interpretations of its basic concepts. The authors provide precise definitions and full proofs of results, sacrificing generalities and limiting the scope of the material in order to do so. The text is organized in four parts: strategic games, extensive games with perfect information, extensive games with imperfect information, and coalitional games. It includes over 100 exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book on The General Theory of Electrical Machines, by B. Adkins, which was published in 1957, has been well received, as a manual containing the theories on which practical methods of calculating machine performance can be based, and as a text-book for advanced students. Since 1957, many important developments have taken place in the practical application of electrical machine theory. The most important single factor in the development has been the increasing availability of the digital computer, which was only beginning to be used in the solution of machine and power system problems in 1957. Since most of the recent development, particularly that with which the authors have been concerned, has related to a. c. machines, the present book, which is in other respects an up-to-date version of the earlier book, deals primarily with a. c. machines. The second chapter on the primitive machine does deal to some extent with the d. c. machine, because the cross-field d. c. generator servesas an introduction to the two-axis theory and can be used to provide a simple explanation of some of the mathematical methods. The equations also apply directly to a. c. commutator machines. The use of the word 'general' in the title has been criticized. It was never intended to imply that the treatment was comprehen sive in the sense that every possible type of machine and problem was dealt with.

Book excerpt: Information theory and inference, taught together in this exciting textbook, lie at the heart of many important areas of modern technology - communication, signal processing, data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, computational neuroscience, bioinformatics and cryptography. The book introduces theory in tandem with applications. Information theory is taught alongside practical communication systems such as arithmetic coding for data compression and sparse-graph codes for error-correction. Inference techniques, including message-passing algorithms, Monte Carlo methods and variational approximations, are developed alongside applications to clustering, convolutional codes, independent component analysis, and neural networks. Uniquely, the book covers state-of-the-art error-correcting codes, including low-density-parity-check codes, turbo codes, and digital fountain codes - the twenty-first-century standards for satellite communications, disk drives, and data broadcast. Richly illustrated, filled with worked examples and over 400 exercises, some with detailed solutions, the book is ideal for self-learning, and for undergraduate or graduate courses. It also provides an unparalleled entry point for professionals in areas as diverse as computational biology, financial engineering and machine learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book on the market that has been conceived and deliberately written as a one-semester text on basic electric circuit theory. As such, this book employs a novel approach to the exposition of the material in which phasors and ac steady-state analysis are introduced at the beginning. This allows one to use phasors in the discussion of transients excited by ac sources, which makes the presentation of transients more comprehensive and meaningful. Furthermore, the machinery of phasors paves the road to the introduction of transfer functions, which are then used in the analysis of transients and the discussion of Bode plots and filters. Another salient feature of the text is the consolidation into one chapter of the material concerned with dependent sources and operational amplifiers. Dependent sources are introduced as linear models for transistors on the basis of small signal analysis. In the text, PSpice simulations are prominently featured to reinforce the basic material and understanding of circuit analysis. Key Features* Designed as a comprehensive one-semester text in basic circuit theory* Features early introduction of phasors and ac steady-state analysis* Covers the application of phasors and ac steady-state analysis* Consolidates the material on dependent sources and operational amplifiers* Places emphasis on connections between circuit theory and other areas in electrical engineering* Includes PSpice tutorials and examples* Introduces the design of active filters* Includes problems at the end of every chapter* Priced well below similar books designed for year-long courses

Book excerpt: A lively and accessible introduction to themes and debates in archaeological theory for students of all levels Archaeological Theory is a relatable, accessible, reader-friendly first step into the world of theory for archaeology students. Recognizing that many students shy away from the study of theory for fear that the material is too difficult or obscure, Archaeological Theory maintains that any student can develop an understanding of theory and that a knowledge of theory will lead to better practice. As one of the leading texts for introductory courses in archaeology and archaeological theory, it has provided many students with the essential foundation for a complete education in the discipline. With a focus on clarifying the history and development of archaeological theory, this valuable text serves as a roadmap to the different schools of theory in archaeology, clarifying the foundations of these schools of thought, the relationships between them, and the ideas that distinguish each from the other. Students will also learn about the relationship between archaeology and cultural and political developments, the origins of New and ‘post-processual’ archaeology, and current issues shaping the field. Written in a clear and informal style and incorporating examples, cartoons, and dialogues, this text provides an ideal introduction for students at all levels. The revised third edition has been updated with new and revised chapters and an expanded glossary and bibliography, as well as new readings to guide further study. Engages readers with informal and easy-to-understand prose, as well as examples, cartoons, and informal dialogues Prepares students to understand complex topics and current and perennial issues in the field such as epistemology, agency, and materiality in the context of archaeological practice Discusses current developments in associated disciplines New and revised chapters on the material turn, politics and other issues, and an expanded glossary and bibliography with updated reading suggestions Offers expanded coverage of materiality, cultural-historical archaeology, evolutionary theory, and the work of scholars of diverse backgrounds and specializations Engaging and illuminating, Archaeological Theory is an indispensable resource for undergraduate and graduate students in archaeology and related disciplines.
