Book Synopsis The Growing Spine by : Behrooz A. Akbarnia
Download or read book The Growing Spine written by Behrooz A. Akbarnia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spinal disorders in very young children may be caused by a variety of conditions. The treatment of such conditions is often challenging due to the age of the patient and the progressive nature of the deformity. There also may be associated problems such as congenital anomalies, respiratory insufficiency, and neurological problems. Depending on the etiology of the deformity, these children are often cared for by multiple specialists including pediatricians, pediatric orthopaedists or orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, oncologists, and/or pulmonologists. Health professionals in all of the mentioned disciplines are involved in the management of these patients, which is why compiling a comprehensive textbook that is not limited to orthopedic specialists is essential. This textbook will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients. Furthermore, other professionals such as nurses, physical therapists and healthcare professionals in training are usually not familiar with these conditions and are in need of a reference book to consult when caring for children with spinal deformities.

Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
Book Synopsis Exterior Differential Systems by : Robert L. Bryant
Download or read book Exterior Differential Systems written by Robert L. Bryant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a treatment of exterior differential systems. It will in clude both the general theory and various applications. An exterior differential system is a system of equations on a manifold defined by equating to zero a number of exterior differential forms. When all the forms are linear, it is called a pfaffian system. Our object is to study its integral manifolds, i. e. , submanifolds satisfying all the equations of the system. A fundamental fact is that every equation implies the one obtained by exterior differentiation, so that the complete set of equations associated to an exterior differential system constitutes a differential ideal in the algebra of all smooth forms. Thus the theory is coordinate-free and computations typically have an algebraic character; however, even when coordinates are used in intermediate steps, the use of exterior algebra helps to efficiently guide the computations, and as a consequence the treatment adapts well to geometrical and physical problems. A system of partial differential equations, with any number of inde pendent and dependent variables and involving partial derivatives of any order, can be written as an exterior differential system. In this case we are interested in integral manifolds on which certain coordinates remain independent. The corresponding notion in exterior differential systems is the independence condition: certain pfaffian forms remain linearly indepen dent. Partial differential equations and exterior differential systems with an independence condition are essentially the same object.

Book Synopsis Neuro-Ophthalmology by : Matthew J. Thurtell
Download or read book Neuro-Ophthalmology written by Matthew J. Thurtell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuro-ophthalmology is a field of medicine that touches on every subspecialty in neurology, but has an undeserved reputation as a branch of knowledge that is difficult to learn and practice. Many neurologists and ophthalmologists do not receive sufficient exposure to neuro-ophthalmology during their residencies, and are uncomfortable diagnosing and treating patients with neuro-ophthalmic problems. Authored by neuro-ophthalmologists whose careers span three generations in the field, Neuro-Ophthalmology helps clinicians evaluate and manage patients with neuro-ophthalmic problems. This "curb-side consult" approach is divided into five sections: afferent (visual) disorders; efferent (eye movement) disorders; eyelid disorders; pupil disorders; and combination syndromes. Based on the most current scholarly evidence and filled with practical advice, Neuro-Ophthalmology provides the answers to "what do I do now?"
