Book excerpt: This volume documents our growing understanding of the human major histocompatibility complex. The application of this information is ever more important as the limits of transplantation continue to be reduced, including the recent success of bone marrow transplantation between unrelated but closely matched individuals. In addition, the need to transfuse platelets in the face of immunologic barriers continues to challenge transfusion services. Thus, the serologic information summarized in this volume is essential for optimal patient care. At the same time, recombinant DNA technology has led to a revolution in our understanding of many aspects of basic biology. Among the advances has been the initial characterization of the structure of some HLA loci. While this will ultimately improve clinical services, constant reference to serologic data is essential so that the powerful new techniques can be applied in the most effective ways. The timing of the First Red Cross International Histocompatibility Workshop is fortunate as it brings together experts from around the world to address the state of the art. We are all grateful to Dr. John Lee and his colleagues for organizing the workshop, and for bringing together in this volume the material to be presented in Beijing during October 17-23, 1990. Leon W. Hoyer, M.D.

The book explores the biological significance and role of the HLA system in organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation management. This volume is an invaluable guide to the full spectrum of HLA-related science while also serving as a conceptual and technical resource for those involved in HLA-related research and in clinical or surgical practice. In addition, it will be a primary point of contact for individuals working in other areas who suddenly find that their research is drawing them into the complexities of HLA genetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a natural history of the major histocompatibility complex written for anyone who is working on the MHC but wants to step back and review the complex in its entirety; for anyone who wants to be introduced to the MHC; or for anyone who is just curious about this much talked-about chromosomal region. By natural history is meant an all encompassing treatment of the MHC, both human and mouse, in its entire range and its details - but presented in a way that anybody can understand without consulting a variety of other sources. Most of the details are summarized in the form of tables whereas the text concentrates on generalizations and discussions. Thus, the book will be of interest to immunologists and geneticists seeking an overview of the subject and to graduate students in these disciplines. It will also be of value to technicians working in HLA-typing laboratories.

This raises legal and socio-ethical and issues that have not been addressed. In this age of international biobanking involving populations, are current legal and ethical approaches sufficient? This book of selected papers covers population research and banking as well as accompanying confidentiality, and governance concerns. Possible commercialization, patents, benefit sharing, discrimination, and the role of patient organizations and of developing countries are also discussed. New perspectives and models are provided. The book concludes with a Statement of Principles on the Ethical Conduct of Human Genetic Research Involving Populations. Policymakers, academics, legislators and researchers will find this book to be current and controversial. The human genome may be mapped but the legal and socio-ethical debate is far from over.

Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s advances in DNA sequencing have enhanced our understanding of humanity and all living things. Driven by these advances, the closely related sciences of Bioinformatics and Biocomputing have become the ultimate interdisciplinary study areas, forever blurring the lines between engineering, biology and computer science and bringing together researchers who ordinarily wouldn't interact. While Bioinformatics largely focuses on the analysis, prediction, imaging and sequencing of genes, the broader, interdisciplinary field of Biocomputing includes the study of biological models of computing using traditional materials, genomic modelling and visualisation, biomaterials for non-traditional computer designs and computer architectures for those materials. In addition, Biocomputing uses the principles and tools of computer science to model or algorithmically specify complex biological information systems and computational systems with life-like capabilities. Biocomputing has manifested numerous government multi-agency programs, including the Human Genome Project, the High Performance Computing & Communications (HPCC) initiative, the Human Brain Project, and other related programs such as the National Information Infrastructure and Digital Libraries initiatives, which have strong bio-related components. This book brings together the latest research in this fast-growing field.

Issues discussed include the innovative use of vaccines against diseases such as meningococcal infection in Africa, Haemophilus influenza type b, varicella, and hepatitis, efforts to develop a new generation of vaccines against cholera and typhoid, shigella and Helicobacter pylori, as well as developments in the quest for vaccines against tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, dengue, malaria, and hookworm. It also deals with the use of vaccines to fight bioterrorism attacks; regulatory and safety issues; financing issues, impact of health sector reform and the sustainability of immunisation programmes.
