Book excerpt: When we acce pted th ekindinvitationof Prof. Dr. F. K. Scnxmrrto write a monographon abstract harmonic analysis for the Grundlehren. der Maihemaiischen Wissenscha/ten series, weintendedto writeall that wecouldfindoutaboutthesubjectin a textof about 600printedpages. We intended thatour book should be accessi ble tobeginners, and we hoped to makeit usefulto specialists as well. These aims proved to be mutually inconsistent. Hencethe presentvolume comprises onl y half of theprojectedwork. Itgives all ofthe structure oftopological groups neededfor harmonic analysisas it is known to u s; it treats integration on locallycompact groups in detail;it contains an introductionto the theory of group representati ons. In the second volume we will treat harmonicanalysisoncompactgroupsand locallycompactAbeliangroups, in considerable et d ail. Thebook is basedon courses given by E. HEWITT at the University of Washington and the University of Uppsala, althoughnaturallythe material of these courses has been en ormously expanded to meet the needsof a formal monograph. Like the. other treatments of harmonic analysisthathaveappeared since 1940,the book is a linealdescendant of A. WEIL'S fundamentaltreatise (WElL [4J)1. The debtof all workers in the field to WEIL'S work is wellknown and enormous. We havealso borrowed freely from LOOMIS'S treatmentof the subject (Lool\IIS[2 J), from NAIMARK [1J,and most especially from PONTRYA GIN [7]. In our exposition ofthestructur e of locally compact Abelian groups and of the PONTRYA GIN-VA N KAM PEN dualitytheorem, wehave beenstrongly influenced byPONTRYA GIN'S treatment. We hope to havejustified the writing of yet anothertreatiseon abstractharmonicanalysis by taking up recentwork, by writingoutthedetailsofeveryimportantconstruction andtheorem, andby including a largenumberof concrete ex amplesand factsnotavailablein other textbooks.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis of Probability Measures on Hypergroups by : Walter R. Bloom
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis of Probability Measures on Hypergroups written by Walter R. Bloom and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.
Book Synopsis Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis by : Alexey N. Karapetyants

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the collaboration agreement between Springer and the ISAAC society. This is the second in the two-volume series originating from the 2020 activities within the international scientific conference "Modern Methods, Problems and Applications of Operator Theory and Harmonic Analysis" (OTHA), Southern Federal University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia. This volume focuses on mathematical methods and applications of probability and statistics in the context of general harmonic analysis and its numerous applications. The two volumes cover new trends and advances in several very important fields of mathematics, developed intensively over the last decade. The relevance of this topic is related to the study of complex multi-parameter objects required when considering operators and objects with variable parameters.
Book Synopsis Probability on Compact Lie Groups by : David Applebaum
Download or read book Probability on Compact Lie Groups written by David Applebaum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory on compact Lie groups deals with the interaction between “chance” and “symmetry,” a beautiful area of mathematics of great interest in its own sake but which is now also finding increasing applications in statistics and engineering (particularly with respect to signal processing). The author gives a comprehensive introduction to some of the principle areas of study, with an emphasis on applicability. The most important topics presented are: the study of measures via the non-commutative Fourier transform, existence and regularity of densities, properties of random walks and convolution semigroups of measures and the statistical problem of deconvolution. The emphasis on compact (rather than general) Lie groups helps readers to get acquainted with what is widely seen as a difficult field but which is also justified by the wealth of interesting results at this level and the importance of these groups for applications. The book is primarily aimed at researchers working in probability, stochastic analysis and harmonic analysis on groups. It will also be of interest to mathematicians working in Lie theory and physicists, statisticians and engineers who are working on related applications. A background in first year graduate level measure theoretic probability and functional analysis is essential; a background in Lie groups and representation theory is certainly helpful but the first two chapters also offer orientation in these subjects.

Download or read book Functional Equations on Hypergroups written by L szl¢ Szkelyhidi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of hypergroups is a rapidly developing area of mathematics due to its diverse applications in different areas like probability, harmonic analysis, etc. This book exhibits the use of functional equations and spectral synthesis in the theory of hypergroups. It also presents the fruitful consequences of this delicate OC marriageOCO where the methods of spectral analysis and synthesis can provide an efficient tool in characterization problems of function classes on hypergroups. This book is written for the interested reader who has open eyes for both functional equations and hypergroups, and who dares to enter a new world of ideas, a new world of methods OCo and, sometimes, a new world of unexpected difficulties.
Book Synopsis Automorphic Representations and L-Functions for the General Linear Group: Volume 2 by : Dorian Goldfeld
Download or read book Automorphic Representations and L-Functions for the General Linear Group: Volume 2 written by Dorian Goldfeld and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate-level textbook provides an elementary exposition of the theory of automorphic representations and L-functions for the general linear group in an adelic setting. Definitions are kept to a minimum and repeated when reintroduced so that the book is accessible from any entry point, and with no prior knowledge of representation theory. The book includes concrete examples of global and local representations of GL(n), and presents their associated L-functions. In Volume 1, the theory is developed from first principles for GL(1), then carefully extended to GL(2) with complete detailed proofs of key theorems. Several proofs are presented for the first time, including Jacquet's simple and elegant proof of the tensor product theorem. In Volume 2, the higher rank situation of GL(n) is given a detailed treatment. Containing numerous exercises by Xander Faber, this book will motivate students and researchers to begin working in this fertile field of research.

Book Synopsis C*-Algebras and Their Automorphism Groups by : Søren Eilers
Download or read book C*-Algebras and Their Automorphism Groups written by Søren Eilers and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegantly edited landmark edition of Gert Kjærgård Pedersen’s C*-Algebras and their Automorphism Groups (1979) carefully and sensitively extends the classic work to reflect the wealth of relevant novel results revealed over the past forty years. Revered from publication for its writing clarity and extremely elegant presentation of a vast space within operator algebras, Pedersen’s monograph is notable for reviewing partially ordered vector spaces and group automorphisms in unusual detail, and by strict intention releasing the C*-algebras from the yoke of representations as Hilbert space operators. Under the editorship of Søren Eilers and Dorte Olesen, the second edition modernizes Pedersen’s work for a new generation of C*-algebraists, with voluminous new commentary, all-new indexes, annotation and terminology annexes, and a surfeit of new discussion of applications and of the author’s later work. Covers basic C*-algebra theory in a short and appealingly elegant way, with a few additions and corrections given to the editors by the original author. Expands coverage to select contemporary accomplishments in C*-algebras of direct relevance to the scope of the first edition, including aspects of K-theory and set theory. Identifies key modern literature in an updated bibliography with over 100 new entries, and greatly enhances indexing throughout. Modernizes coverage of algebraic problems in relation to the theory of unitary representations of locally compact groups. Reviews mathematical accomplishments of Gert K. Pedersen in comments and a biography.
