Book excerpt: We have parameterized Einstein’s thought experiment with atomic clocks, supposing that we knew neither if the space and time are relative or absolute, nor if the speed of light was ultimate speed or not. We have obtained a Parameterized Special Theory of Relativity (PSTR) (1982).

Book excerpt: Following our preceding article, where we discussed alternative interpretations of the advanced perihelion of Mercury, the present article revisits the 1919 solar eclipse expedition led by Arthur Eddington, which famously provided the first observational confirmation of Einstein's theory of general relativity. We focus on the deflection of starlight data obtained during the eclipse, a cornerstone of this validation. Here, we explore three alternative explanations for the observed light bending that challenge the sole attribution to general relativity. Firstly, the paper begins by arguing based on criticisms raised by Tullio Levi-Civita, a contemporary mathematician, regarding Einstein's use of pseudo-tensors in his calculations. Levi-Civita argued that this approach introduced unnecessary complexity and obscured alternative interpretations of the data. Secondly, we delve into astrophysical phenomena that could mimic the observed light deflection, based on the varying speed of light, by assuming a photon has mass. (cf. ‘t Hooft et al., Light is Heavy). Moreover, in the literature, Molodtsov initiated soft set theory as an extension of fuzzy set theory to deal with uncertainties occurring in the natural and social sciences. It attracted the attention of mathematicians as well as social scientists due to its potential to unify certain mathematical aspects and applications in decision making processes; therefore, we shall discuss a bit how to model the photon as an extended massive particle of light, possibly related to such a soft set point [15, 16]. For further exploration, it is possible to assume the crystalline lattice of subvacuum structure (cf. Gremaud) as part of hypersoft topological spaces [16, 16a]. We strongly believe that the true strength of science lies in its continuous search for evidence and refinement of existing models. Therefore, it can be expected that new data can be helpful to reevaluate these matters, for instance, in the upcoming eclipse in the next month of 2024.

By showing that the concepts of this theory are interrelated to form a unified totality David Bohm supplements some of the more specialist courses which have tended to give students a fragmentary impression of the logical and conceptual nature of physics as a whole.

Book excerpt: The Special Theory of Relativity: Based on a short course of lectures delivered in the late 1930s, this short book presents the theory of Special Relativity by formulating a redefinition of the measurement of length, and thus will appeal to students of physics who wish to think through Einstein’s thought without the encumbrance of quasi-scientific concepts and language. Relativity: A Very Elementary Exposition: This brief lecture, delivered in October 1921 and published for the first time in 1925, offers an explanation of Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity for the non-scientist, giving a general overview that does justice both to the actual physics involved, and the wider implications of this revolutionary discovery of the 20th century.

Treated in detail are the Lorentz transformations, their kinematical consequences (the so-called paradoxes), relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics as an example of a relativistic field theory, and the principal features of relativistic hydrodynamics. The book offers a logical development of special relativity from Einstein's principle of relativity alone; arrives at the essential statements of the theory by a direct approach ? this emphasis is different from that of most books; and offers a concise introduction to tensor calculus as needed in special relativity. A selection of problems and documentation of the experimental tests of special relativity are given.

Book excerpt: Interpreting general relativity relies on a proper description of non-inertial frames and Dirac observables. This book describes global non-inertial frames in special and general relativity. The first part covers special relativity and Minkowski space time, before covering general relativity, globally hyperbolic Einstein space-time, and the application of the 3+1 splitting method to general relativity. The author uses a Hamiltonian description and the Dirac–Bergmann theory of constraints to show that the transition between one non-inertial frame and another is a gauge transformation, extra variables describing the frame are gauge variables, and the measureable matter quantities are gauge invariant Dirac observables. Point particles, fluids and fields are also discussed, including how to treat the problems of relative times in the description of relativistic bound states, and the problem of relativistic centre of mass. Providing a detailed description of mathematical methods, the book is perfect for theoretical physicists, researchers and students working in special and general relativity.

Book excerpt: Writing a new book on the classic subject of Special Relativity, on which numerous important physicists have contributed and many books have already been written, can be like adding another epicycle to the Ptolemaic cosmology. Furthermore, it is our belief that if a book has no new elements, but simply repeats what is written in the existing literature, perhaps with a different style, then this is not enough to justify its publication. However, after having spent a number of years, both in class and research with relativity, I have come to the conclusion that there exists a place for a new book. Since it appears that somewhere along the way, mathem- ics may have obscured and prevailed to the degree that we tend to teach relativity (and I believe, theoretical physics) simply using “heavier” mathematics without the inspiration and the mastery of the classic physicists of the last century. Moreover current trends encourage the application of techniques in producing quick results and not tedious conceptual approaches resulting in long-lasting reasoning. On the other hand, physics cannot be done a ́ la carte stripped from philosophy, or, to put it in a simple but dramatic context A building is not an accumulation of stones! As a result of the above, a major aim in the writing of this book has been the distinction between the mathematics of Minkowski space and the physics of r- ativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses in detail the special theory of relativity without including all the instruments of theoretical physics, enabling readers who are not budding theoretical physicists to develop competence in the field. An arbitrary but fixed inertial system is chosen, where the known velocity of light is measured. With respect to this system a moving clock loses time and a moving length contracts. The book then presents a definition of simultaneity for the other inertial frames without using the velocity of light. To do so it employs the known reciprocity principle, which in this context serves to provide a definition of simultaneity in the other inertial frames. As a consequence, the Lorentz transformation is deduced and the universal constancy of light is established. With the help of a lattice model of the special theory of relativity the book provides a deeper understanding of the relativistic effects. Further, it discusses the key STR experiments and formulates and solves 54 problems in detail.
