Book excerpt: A spellbinding debut about half sisters, one black and one white, on a 1950s road trip through the American South Self-educated and brown-skinned, Cassie works full time in her grandmother’s laundry in rural Mississippi. Illiterate and white, Judith falls for “colored music” and dreams of life as a big city radio star. These teenaged girls are half-sisters. And when they catch wind of their wayward father’s inheritance coming down in Virginia, they hitch their hopes to a road trip together to claim what’s rightly theirs. In an old junk car, with a frying pan, a ham, and a few dollars hidden in a shoe, they set off through the American Deep South of the 1950s, a bewitchingly beautiful landscape as well as one bedeviled by racial strife and violence. Suzanne Feldman's Absalom’s Daughters combines the buddy movie, the coming-of-age tale, and a dash of magical realism to enthrall and move us with an unforgettable, illuminating novel.

Book Synopsis Fathers and Daughters in the Hebrew Bible by : Johanna Stiebert
Download or read book Fathers and Daughters in the Hebrew Bible written by Johanna Stiebert and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The father-daughter dyad features in the Hebrew Bible in all of narratives, laws, myths and metaphors. In previous explorations of this relationship, the tendency has been to focus on discrete stories - notable among them, Judges 11 (the story of Jephthah's human sacrifice of his daughter) and Genesis 19 (the dark tale of Lot's daughters' seduction of their father). By taking the full spectrum into account, however, the daughter emerges prominently as (not only) expendable and exploitable (as an emphasis on daughter sacrifice or incest has suggested) but as cherished and protected by her father. Depictions of daughters are multifarious and there is a balance of very positive and very negative images. While not uncritical of earlier feminist investigations, this book makes a contribution to feminist biblical criticism and utilizes methods drawn from the social sciences and psychoanalysis. Alongside careful textual analysis, Johanna Stiebert offers a critical evaluation of the heuristic usefulness of the ethnographic honour-shame model, of parallels with Roman family studies, and of the application and meaning of 'patriarchy'. Following semantic analysis of the primary Hebrew terms for 'father' (אב) and 'daughter' (בת), as well as careful examination of inter-family dynamics and the daughter's role vis-à-vis the son's, alongside thorough investigation of both Judges 11 and Genesis 19, and also of the metaphor of God-the-father of daughters Eve, Wisdom and Zion, Stiebert provides the fullest exploration of daughters in the Hebrew Bible to date.

Book Synopsis The Inclusive Bible by : Priests for Equality (Organization)
Download or read book The Inclusive Bible written by Priests for Equality (Organization) and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While this new Bible is certainly an inclusive-language translation, it is much more: it is a re-imagining of the scriptures and our relationship to them. Not merely replacing male pronouns, the translators have rethought what kind of language has built barriers between the text and its readers. Seeking to be faithful to the original languages, they have sought new and non-sexist ways to express the same ancient truths. The Inclusive Bible is a fresh, dynamic translation into modern English, carefully crafted to let the power and poetry of the language shine forth--particularly when read aloud--giving it an immediacy and intimacy rarely found in traditional translations of the Bible. The Inclusive Bible contains both the Old and the New Testaments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now seen through the eyes of the young woman who became the unwilling catalyst to cruel events - incest, murder, and war, this is the controversial retelling of the epic of Absalom. Tamar, daughter of the famous King David, is raped by her half-brother. Although angered, David does nothing. Tamar's full-brother Absalom is outraged over the crime and the King's inaction. Absalom and his mother Makha plot revenge. While this turmoil unfolds, Bathsheba (David's most favored wife) quietly maneuvers to have her son Solomon inherit the throne, bypassing Absalom and the older brothers. Tamar loves her family above all others and is horrified to see her family's quarrel escalate out of control. She bravely struggles to prevent the clash from degenerating into civil war and undertakes a remarkable journey on foot to find the King. Her companion Hana accompanies her, disguised as a warrior to protect Tamar. But she cannot prevent the tragic denouement. As her world crumbles about her, Tamar keeps focus and has personal triumph in the end. After three thousand years, Tamar tells the story in her own words. The novel is an interesting study of two charismatic leaders who were themselves very flawed personalities, about the anguish within a family that was torn apart by their clash, and about a mother and daughter, whose love for each other is strained by their differing loyalties.
