Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Through the Eyes of High School Youth The appearance OF this volume at the close of the Lincoln Sesquicentennial Year brings to a fitting climax the observance of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln by youth throughout the Nation. When the Lin coln Sesquicentennial Commission was appointed by President Eisenhower in November 1957, one of its first official actions was the development of a program of participation in the Sesquicentennial by the youth of America and the appointment of a committee to carry out this program. At the high school level it was decided that participation in various kinds of appropriate activities would be suggested to the schools, and that a volume would be published representing some of the outstanding contributions to the Sesquicentennial on the part of high school youth. The various poems, essays, plays, etc., printed in this volume are the result of an effort by teachers and students in public, private, and parochial Schools all over America to evoke a thoughtful appraisal of Lincoln as he is seen by high school youth of today. In this volume we have ust such a thoughtful appraisal, an appraisal marked with a newness, a youthful vigor, a directness that could come only from young Americans who appreciate what Lincoln means today. Book excerpt: Abe Lincoln is growing up on the American frontier in Indiana. It s cold, there isn t usually enough to eat, there s nothing at all to read, and the one job that awaits him is farmer, like his overbearing father. But a chance to travel down the Mississippi river offers Abe the opportunity to see and meet people he has never dreamed of. Abe s eyes are opened and he can t go back to being the boy he was before. With the help of his friends, Abe will strike out to find his own path. Obstacles wait around every river bend, and the shadow of death is never far, but nothing will stop him from becoming the man he knows he can be. You might think you know the end of his story, but you have no idea what it took to get there. Researched and written by award-winning educator, Jan Jacobi, Young Lincoln brings history to life through a familiar hero who will jump off the page. For ages 12-16.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American There is not one who reads these lines who was born in humbler circumstances than Abraham Lincoln; not one whose opportunities in life are so limited as those which surrounded him; and yet he became one of the greatest of men. His life proves to all generations the power of an indomitable will and a resolute purpose; that man, when he conquers him self, can conquer the world. Do you remember that old homestead where you were born? It was a mansion compared with that rough log cabin in the Kentucky wilderness where Abraham Lincoln began life on that cold winter day on the twelfth of February, in 1809. Do you remember the dear old village where you spent your child hood days; its long country roads, shaded with towering maples and elms, along which you romped and shouted and played on your way to school those good old days in the country? It was a, great world of light and laughter, of pleasure and friendship, of wonderful Opportunities, compared with that forest home of Abraham Lincoln where only the growl of the bear echoed along the trail, where the ring Of the ax was the only sound of civilization, and desolation and poverty were his only friends - and they were staunch friends. Every American is rich today in comparison with the worldly posses sions of Abraham Lincoln during his childhood, his youth, and his early manhood - rich in surroundings of home; rich in the comforts of life; rich in the opportunities for learning and education. There is not an American youth who is not a millionaire In the possibilities of vast success in life, compared to the possibilities that were within the grasp of Abraham Lincoln on the day that he left his father's roof to go out into the great world, of which he knew only the knowledge that comes from the school of the woods and the motherhood of Nature. There was one thing that he did not know and never learned - and that was Fear. He learned early that man is his own master; that with a strong arm, a strong heart, and a strong will, there is no power on earth that he need fear; that with his conscience clear and his mind clean the future will take care of itself and even Death is conquered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Pioneer Home to the White House: Life of Abraham Lincoln: Boyhood, Youth, Manhood, Assasination, Death The chief object of the book is to show how its hero won his position; yet it incidentally exhibits the manners and customs of the times, and section of country, in which he was reared. Provincialisms are intentionally avoided, as well as that singular perversion of the English language that characterized the unlettered people of Kentucky and Indiana sixty years ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate, moving portrait of Abraham Lincoln as rarely seen—through the eyes of his children—and captured in exquisite illustrations. Historians claim him as one of America’s most revered presidents. But to his rambunctious sons, Abraham Lincoln was above all a playful and loving father. Here is Lincoln as seen by two of his boys: Willie, thrilled to be on his first train trip when Lincoln was deciding to run for president; Willie and Tad barging into Cabinet meetings to lift Lincoln’s spirits in the early days of the Civil War, Tad accompanying him to Richmond just after the South’s defeat. With the war raging and the Union under siege, we see history unfolding through Willie’s eyes and then through Tad’s -- and we see Lincoln rising above his own inborn sadness and personal tragedy through his devotion to his sons. With evocative and engaging illustrations by P.J. Lynch, Rosemary Wells offers a carefully researched biography that gives us a Lincoln not frozen in time but accessible and utterly real. Back matter includes an author’s note.

One who knew him well said of him: "He was a man of great drollery, and it would almost make you laugh to look at him. I never saw but one other man whose quiet, droll look excited in me the disposition to laugh, and that was 'Artemus Ward.'"Mordecai was quite a story-teller, and in this Abe resembled his 'Uncle Mord, ' as we called him. He was an honest man, as tender-hearted as a woman, and to the last degree charitable and benevolent.

Book excerpt: The boy or girl who reads to-day may know more about the real Lincoln than his own children knew. The greatest President's son, Robert Lincoln, discussing a certain incident in their life in the White House, remarked to the writer, with a smile full of meaning:"I believe you know more about our family matters than I do!"This is because "all the world loves a lover"-and Abraham Lincoln loved everybody. With all his brain and brawn, his real greatness was in his heart. He has been called "the Great-Heart of the White House," and there is little doubt that more people have heard about him than there are who have read of the original "Great-Heart" in "The Pilgrim's Progress."Indeed, it is safe to say that more millions in the modern world are acquainted with the story of the rise of Abraham Lincoln from a poorlybuilt log cabin to the highest place among "the seats of the mighty," than are familiar with the Bible story of Joseph who arose and stood next to the throne of the Pharaohs.Nearly every year, especially since the Lincoln Centennial, 1909, something new has been added to the universal knowledge of one of the greatest, if not the greatest man who ever lived his life in the world. Not only those who "knew Lincoln," but many who only "saw him once" or shook hands with him, have been called upon to tell what they saw him do or heard him say. So hearty was his kindness toward everybody that the most casual remark of his seems to be charged with deep human affection-"the touch of Nature" which has made "the whole world kin" to him.He knew just how to sympathize with every one. The people felt this, without knowing why, and recognized it in every deed or word or touch, so that those who have once felt the grasp of his great warm hand seem to have been drawn into the strong circuit of "Lincoln fellowship," and were enabled, as if by "the laying on of hands," to speak of him ever after with a deep and tender feeling. There are many such people who did not rush into print with their observations and experiences. Their Lincoln memories seemed too sacred to scatter far and wide. Some of them have yielded, with real reluctance, in relating all for publication in THE STORY OF YOUNG ABRAHAM LINCOLN only because they wished their recollections to benefit the rising generation.

Michael and Derek don’t expect the adventure of a lifetime while visiting a Civil War museum with their grandmother. But when the mysterious museum keeper invites them to play a special history game, they suddenly find themselves walking through a door into a very realistic depiction of 1862. It’s only the beginning of their journey as they are whisked away by a carriage to nearby Antietam only days after a violent battle. There, they see for themselves the tragic aftermath of war and come face-to-face with Abraham Lincoln. Suddenly, the boys begin to wonder—is this all real? Patricia Polacco brings history to vibrant life and uses facts and primary sources to open a doorway through time into a pivotal moment of the Civil War.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Centennial: A Collection of Authentic Stories, With Poems, Songs, and Programs, for the Boys, Girls, and Teachers of Elementary Schools One of the greatest features of the Lincoln Centennial should be to bring to the children of this country those elements of his character, influence, and greatness which they can appreciate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Democracy of Abraham Lincoln: Address by Henry Cabot Lodge Before the Students of Boston University School of Law on March 14, 1913 The men who object to what they style government by injunction are, as regards the essential principles of government, in hearty sympathy with their remote skin clad ancestors, who lived in caves, fought one another with stone-headed axes, and ate the mammoth and woolly rhinoceros. They are interesting as representing a geological survival, but they are dangerous whenever there is the least chance of their making the principles of this ages-buried past living factors in our presentlife. They are not in sympathy with men of good minds and sound civic morality. Furthermore, the Chicago convention attacked the Supreme Court. Again, this represents a species of atavism - that is, of recurrence to the ways of thought of remote barbarian ancestors. Savages do not like an independent and upright judiciary. They want. The judge to decide their way, and if he does not they want to behead him. The Populist-s experience much the same emotions when they realize that the judi ciary stands between them and plunder. Let us now examine what Lincoln said or wrote and try to deter mine whether he stood for the new or the old, for self-limited or for direct and unlimited democracy with especial reference to the two points of government by representation and judicial independ ence. On one most memorable occasion Lincoln told the world what the Government was for which the people whom he led were pouring out their treasure and offering up their lives. I will not use my own words to describe what he then said but those of an impartial English historian. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
