Book excerpt: The naming practices of Chinese Americans are the focus of this work. Since Chinese immigration began in the mid-19th century, names of immigrants and their descendants have been influenced by both Chinese and American name customs. This detailed study first describes the naming traditions of China, providing a base for understanding how personal names may change in the interaction between cultures. One discovers that surnames are clues to Chinese dialect sounds, that many have been Americanized, that new surnames were created and that, in more recent decades as the Chinese American population has grown, new names practices developed and surnames have proliferated. Included are ideographs to surnames and an overview of their preservation by Americans of Chinese descent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable resource for teachers and other professionals who are looking for a proven way to increase cultural appreciation and awareness. New applications of the ABCs model of Cultural Understanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done in the United States, and Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABCs model complicated and challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who were initially highly resistant to such possibilities. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives – life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. In addition to the narratives, other instruments including the Transcultural Competence Scale (TCC), provide further evidence of the positive impact of the ABCs on participants' receptivity toward cultural differences. In the TRANSABCs project, researchers from both sides of the Atlantic invited teacher candidates, students who will become workplace and other professionals to write an autobiography (A) of themselves from various cultural perspectives, a biography (B) of an individual who is culturally different from themselves along particular dimensions, and to use these documents to conduct cross-cultural comparisons (C) between themselves and the person they interviewed. Furthermore, candidates developed culturally responsive ideas for the school or the workplace (C). These exchanges and analyses produced epiphanies and insights that translated into specific actions to improve cultural understanding and communication in classrooms and workplaces. Educators and professionals can take from these examples to inspire their own personal journey toward greater cultural understanding and sensitivity.

Book excerpt: The remarkable run of self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders for president of the United States has prompted-for the first time in decades and to the shock of many-a national conversation about socialism. A New York Times poll in late November found that a majority of Democrats had a favorable view of socialism, and in New Hampshire in February, more than half of Democratic voters under 35 told the Boston Globe they call themselves socialists. It's unclear exactly what socialism means to this generation, but couple with the ascendancy of longtime leftwinger Jeremy Corbyn to the leadership of the Labour Party in the UK, it's clear there's a historic, generational shift underway. This book steps into this moment to offer a clear, accessible, informative, and irreverent guide to socialism for the uninitiated. Written by young writers from the dynamic magazine Jacobin, alongside several distinguished scholars, The ABCs of Socialism answers basic questions, including ones that many want to know but might be afraid to ask ("Doesn't socialism always end up in dictatorship?", "Will socialists take my Kenny Loggins records?"). Disarming and pitched to a general readership without sacrificing intellectual depth, this will be the best introduction an idea whose time seems to have come again.

Book excerpt: In The Real ABCs: A Surgeon’s Analysis and a Father’s Legacy, Second Edition, pioneering cataract surgeon Dr. Robert Osher reflects on his 40-year career and candidly shares that the secret to his professional success and personal happiness lies in the pursuit of “the real ABCs”—achievement, balance, and contentment. Dr. Osher was an internationally renowned surgeon and father of five when he was diagnosed with a pineapple-sized kidney cancer at age 53. Suddenly confronted with his own mortality, he resolved to write his legacy for his family, friends, and colleagues. The result is The Real ABCs, originally published after Dr. Osher’s successful recovery and newly updated with his experiences and wisdom of the last decade—an inspirational story of one man’s achievements as well as a prescriptive guide for finding balance and contentment. In The Real ABCs, Dr. Osher tells the story behind some of his accomplishments in ophthalmology, including the founding of the Cincinnati Eye Institute, the Cataract Surgery: Telling It Like It Is meeting, the Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the introduction of groundbreaking techniques in cataract surgery. Dr. Osher demonstrates the importance of hard work and enthusiasm while admitting the inevitability of adversity and setbacks, acknowledging that his achievements wouldn’t be possible without the influence of his cherished teachers, mentors, friends, and family. Throughout the book, Osher also stresses the importance of seeking balance, whether it’s through nature, adventure, service, or adherence to one’s principles. The Real ABCs: A Surgeon’s Analysis and a Father’s Legacy, Second Edition is a deeply personal story filled with universal life lessons. Ultimately, Dr. Osher shows that approaching one’s career and personal life with passion and perseverance can help anyone attain a feeling of contentment and success.

It delves deep into the origin of various behavioural theories that affect these institutions and utilizes scientific theories in mathematics, behavioural economics and psychology (social, cognitive and educational) to examine the complexities, failures and successes of school systems. The book discusses the complex and chaotic nature of schools and the fundamental psychological constructs which form the basis for curriculum and behavioural designs. It also highlights the problems and peculiarities faced by students, parents and educators and suggests alternatives and solutions through real-life case studies. Drawing on in-depth research and theoretical know-how, the book will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers of school education, organizational behaviour, behavioural sciences and applied psychology. It will also be of interest to parents of school-going children, school management heads, policy makers and educators.
