Book excerpt: More Than The House Is Under Construction! A penthouse condo, the corner office—life was easy for Aaron, the youngest McKade brother, who by his own admission sometimes rode on the coattails of his wealthy family. Until his grandfather exiled him to a job building homes in the barrio of south central L.A., that is. Not knowing the difference between a nail and a screw made things tough—but not nearly as tough as figuring out Jennifer Alvarado, the curvaceous Latina in charge of the crew. Despite her suspicion that he'd never done an honest day's work, Jennifer decided to give Aaron a break. Yet even after the mystery rookie had worked overtime to prove his newfound sense of responsibility, she wasn't ready to lower her guard. Because Jennifer had learned the hard way that love without trust was a house without a foundation…and too easy to tear down. The McKade Brothers

Book excerpt: “This is the management book of the year. Clear, powerful and urgent, it's a must read for anyone who cares about where they work and how they work.” —Seth Godin, author of This is Marketing “This book is a breath of fresh air. Read it now, and make sure your boss does too.” —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take, Originals, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg When fast-scaling startups and global organizations get stuck, they call Aaron Dignan. In this book, he reveals his proven approach for eliminating red tape, dissolving bureaucracy, and doing the best work of your life. He’s found that nearly everyone, from Wall Street to Silicon Valley, points to the same frustrations: lack of trust, bottlenecks in decision making, siloed functions and teams, meeting and email overload, tiresome budgeting, short-term thinking, and more. Is there any hope for a solution? Haven’t countless business gurus promised the answer, yet changed almost nothing about the way we work? That’s because we fail to recognize that organizations aren’t machines to be predicted and controlled. They’re complex human systems full of potential waiting to be released. Dignan says you can’t fix a team, department, or organization by tinkering around the edges. Over the years, he has helped his clients completely reinvent their operating systems—the fundamental principles and practices that shape their culture—with extraordinary success. Imagine a bank that abandoned traditional budgeting, only to outperform its competition for decades. An appliance manufacturer that divided itself into 2,000 autonomous teams, resulting not in chaos but rapid growth. A healthcare provider with an HQ of just 50 people supporting over 14,000 people in the field—that is named the “best place to work” year after year. And even a team that saved $3 million per year by cancelling one monthly meeting. Their stories may sound improbable, but in Brave New Work you’ll learn exactly how they and other organizations are inventing a smarter, healthier, and more effective way to work. Not through top down mandates, but through a groundswell of autonomy, trust, and transparency. Whether you lead a team of ten or ten thousand, improving your operating system is the single most powerful thing you can do. The only question is, are you ready?

Book excerpt: This book is not so much a deliberate intention to create and develop a possible income-generating hobby but an evolution of ideas around a certain scenario. This is a departure from the who had done it, the convoluted romance, the thriller, the science fiction, or other kinds of genre. It is a human experience with a bit of everything: humour, sadness, a bit of fantasy, a bit of romance, suspense, and inspiration. It's been difficult to look back and see what originally inspired me to write this. No doubt people who know me will say it's based on similar experiences I've had in my life as they say with a lot of writers. I could also say it reveals a life I was not able to experience in my youth as well as a parenthood I've been unable to have. I was never in a situation these boys found themselves in during my youth. I tended to be an observer of life rather than a participant. So you could say the original idea for writing this book is born out this. It could also be said a genre like this is mixture of psychology and philosophy, with the character building involved in the boys at that sensitive age, having to deal with the trauma, but it was really a case of the boys, their parents, everyone else involved applying, with some professional help, a bit of common sense in what was thought to be a crisis turning out to be a mini crisis. Liam and Shane, in the end, are neither heroes nor villains but are as human as you and I. I didn't write this to set some ultraistic ideal or attempt to propose a method of bringing up children but to just portray how a middle-class family would, although not perfectly, deal with a given set of circumstances. The impact of the violent incident the story's centered round is increased by the somewhat ideal holiday experience. This is what we kiwis call kiwiana, that idealistic pastime of the family getting in the car and holidaying up the coast or to the lake and enjoying the scenery that is often only several hours drive from home. But life was never meant to be all fun and pleasure as adolescent boys can quickly find out. So you can enjoy this book because it's an uncomplicated saga of life itself.

This time she has tackled a love story set in an enchanted bookshop. Chicago's enchanted secondhand bookshop owner Nash Greene has been given a second chance at life. He never imagined that he'd also be given a second chance on love with Chef Clara Tyler. Their leap from friendship to lovers was magical enough without the interference of the books on the second floor. Each move the couple makes seems to be punctuated in the pages of the well-loved novels of the last few centuries.Books are powerful things. They can bring on emotions and encourage the timid heart to accept love. Some books are written to take the reader into a world that only the brave dare to tread. Unfortunately, there are books that are created not to entertain, amuse, or nurture. These are life-snatching books. One is taking out the members of Wendell Baumbach's evening book club at an alarming rate.Within the city is a society called the Order of Scrolls created after the great fire in Alexandria to save books for humanity but, when called upon, will act to save humanity from books. The Order of Scrolls summons their knights to fight to save Chicago from a very dangerous book. Join Nash, Clara, and the secret Order of Scrolls in their quest to find the life-snatching book and destroy it before it destroys them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To celebrate her 75th birthday, Linda Gray, the iconic star of Dallas and timeless beauty, is sharing her road map to happiness in her revelatory memoir. When Linda Gray, iconic star of Dallas, was twenty years old, a magazine editor coldly rejected her as a model, writing that, perhaps one day, “you might shape into something.” Since then, Linda has been evolving and growing, and has shaped into a role model for women of every age in her grace, beauty, generosity, and wisdom. She’s been through more pain and tragedy than her longtime fans realize, having suffered paralyzing polio as a child, growing up with an alcoholic mother, landing in a emotionally abusive marriage at twenty-two and living by her husband’s rules for sixteen years before she openly rebelled against him to take an acting class. At thirty-eight, Linda got her big break, as Larry Hagman’s wife on Dallas. With fame came a bitter, public divorce, trouble at home with her two kids, and the loss of her beloved sister to breast cancer. Linda got through it all—the challenges of sexism in Hollywood and the pressures of being a single working mom—with a relentlessly positive attitude that kept her cruising, with a few speed bumps, to the place of serenity she thrives in now. To celebrate her seventy-fifth birthday, Linda is opening up about her life for the first time. Inside this book, she tells deeply personal stories with wit, humor, and candor, and reveals how she’s learned to love every day as the blessing it is and to treat herself with the kindness she bestows on friends and strangers alike. Along with wisdom, Linda has accumulated a lot of practical tips about maintaining a healthy lifestyle—how to strengthen and detoxify your body, liberate your mind, and uplift your soul—and shares them as well. Her message to “give, love, and shine, baby, shine” will fill anyone with inspiration to live life to the fullest, and never stop pursuing honesty and joy.

Book excerpt: Aaron Stiles is dead. He’s been dead for four years but doesn’t seem to know it. He’s waiting for his partner Bill to come home, and until that happens, he’s not going anywhere. The trouble is, Bill Somers won’t be coming home—ever—because he’s dead, too. The official verdict was suicide, but… The last thing Elliott Smith needs in his latest renovation project is a ghost, especially one who won’t let him sell the place until he solves the mystery of who killed Bill. Elliott has John to help with the spectral side of things, but that leaves Elliott with the quandary of how to get information on the case. After all, he can hardly explain he’s investigating on behalf of one dead man with the assistance of another.

The day was normal, hot and still, with the shimmer of a heat mirage, but today there was one of the vanishingly rare patches of cloud. This could be seen as the harbinger of great things. In this instance, great things with profound consequences certainly followed. There would be death and destruction, joy and sadness, war, disaster, and recovery, and delicious sin. A 1969 Austin Healy Sebring in British Racing Green, its top folded down raced through Beverly Hills along Alpine Drive. It had been purchased by the father of the current owner thirty years earlier, when it was an already pre-owned but lovingly maintained extravagance. It was in showroom condition then, and remained so when he passed it on to his son, who also treated it with the care due a classic car over two hundred years on the road. Parts had been replaced many times, but the car still ran, and could do so on biofuels.

Book excerpt: Along with plan and elevation, section is one of the essential representational techniques of architectural design; among architects and educators, debates about a project's section are common and often intense. Until now, however, there has been no framework to describe or evaluate it. Manual of Section fills this void. Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki, and David J. Lewis have developed seven categories of section, revealed in structures ranging from simple one-story buildings to complex structures featuring stacked forms, fantastical shapes, internal holes, inclines, sheared planes, nested forms, or combinations thereof. To illustrate these categories, the authors construct sixty-three intricately detailed cross-section perspective drawings of built projects—many of the most significant structures in international architecture from the last one hundred years—based on extensive archival research. Manual of Section also includes smart and accessible essays on the history and uses of section.
