First the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear was never meant to be the exhaustive, all comprehensive statement of the method of Christian progress. You and I are not vegetables and the Parable of the Seed is only one side of the truth about the method of Christian growth. The very word purify speaks to us of another condition it implies impurity, it implies a process which is more than contemplation, it implies the reversal of existing conditions, and not merely the growth upwards to unattained conditions. And so growth is not all that Christian men need they need excision, they need casting out of what is in them they need change as well as growth. Purifying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town: A Sermon To one who has reached middle life there begins to be something pathetic in the thought of the hurrying years. To youth the flight of time is a desire and a delight, rather than the opposite. The boy longs for manhood - thinks it glorious to be approaching that consummation of human hopes. The young man is eager to get into the bustle, stir and conflict of middle life. But when the conflict has been carried on for a few years, until the vista before begins perceptibly to shorten and that behind to lengthen, then a change comes, and the birthdays begin to have a touch of sadness in them, as we wonder why they hurry so fast to meet us. Ah! time is our mystery of mysteries in this world. We cannot understand it; we can only stand dumb in its presence, and stretch out imploring hands to it as it steals our years away. Our only possible compensation, if not our only possible alleviation, is to be found in the consciousness of spending the years, as they pass, for worthy and useful ends. Thus only can we get out of them the eternal gold that lies in their heart. Such thoughts as these crowd inevitably on my mind as I rise before you this morning, to remembering that we have been fifteen years together as pastor and people. Fifteen years is not a short time even in the history of a church. But in the working life of a man it is a long time. I cannot therefore find it in my heart to pass over such an anniversary as the present one without notice. May I not trust that the spending of the half hour that is before us in looking back thoughtfully over the years of our common life and labor, may not be unwelcome to you. The recollections of these fifteen years naturally divide themselves into three groups: one group gathering about the town, or the community, as a whole; another about the University; and the third about our own church. Can we do better than let our thoughts take this order? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years AT the request of some of the members of the Boston Association of Ministers I have agreed to prepare a paper upon Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years, from Dec. II, 1854, to Dec. 11, 1894. I have been asked to give a resume' of my ministry, 'and to speak of the men whom I have met, and of the churches and their work when I began my work, and of the hopes of to-day, when everything seems so vastly different from what it did in 1854. The subject is a large one, and it would hardly be possible to condense forty years into forty minutes; and whatever may be said on the subjects suggested must of necessity be fragmentary, conversational, and perhaps somewhat too personal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Historical and Biographical, of Sixty-Four Years in the Ministry Fob many years, and by many persons, including bishops, editors, and others, I have been importuned to publish the substance of my records and recollec tions of the Methodism of my day. It was judged that my great age, my intimate relations with Bishop Asbury, and my acquaintance with other pioneers and fathers of the Church, would enable me thus to preserve much desirable information which would otherwise soon be forgotten. In 1847 the New Jersey Conference took action on the subject, and appointed a committee to confer with me in respect to my journals and other papem, and aid in preparing them for publication. The com mittee was a very competent one, but the members were too widely separated for any effectual result. I had concluded to abandon the design, and this volume would probably never have seen the light had not the Rev. J. B. Wakeley come to my help. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Fifty Years in the Ministry: With Numerous Character Sketches The observance of the fiftieth anniversary of my licensure to preach the gospel recalled to my mind so vividly many of the scenes and occurrences of the past, and many of the friends of former years, that I have thought it might be of interest to my family, and perhaps to others, to place on record some of my recollections of former times, showing, as they do, the changes which have taken place in one short lifetime. The great mass of the people belong to the industrial classes, who possess good common sense and such education as qualifies them for the ordinary pursuits and enjoyments of life, but who make no pretensions to literary culture and scientific knowledge. A man who can write an instructive and entertaining book about common things, level to the capacity of this class, has an opportunity of doing greater good than the man who can produce a learned and profound treatise on some abstract scientific subject, which but few persons would be able to understand and appreciate. After all, it is the common, everyday, practical things of life that really concern and interest the great majority of the people, and these are often deemed too trifling to secure attention and be placed on record for their perusal and instruction. This narrative is about a very common life, passed among common scenes, and occupied with common things. It makes no pretensions to elegance of diction or attractiveness of style; but tells in a plain and simple manner the story of a life spent by a common man, among common people, in an attempt to do them good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year thousands of God's servants leave the ministry convinced they are failures. Years ago, in the midst of a crisis of faith, Kent Hughes almost became one of them. But instead he and his wife Barbara turned to God's Word, determined to learn what God had to say about success and to evaluate their ministry from a biblical point of view. This book describes their journey and their liberation from the "success syndrome"-the misguided belief that success in ministry means increased numbers. In today's world it is easy to be seduced by the secular thinking that places a number on everything. But the authors teach that true success in ministry lies not in numbers but in several key areas: faithfulness, serving, loving, believing, prayer, holiness, and a Christlike attitude. Their thoughts will encourage readers who grapple with feelings of failure and lead them to a deeper, fuller understanding of success in Christian ministry. This book was originally published by Tyndale in 1987 and includes a new preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of English literature, church ministers have figured prominently in novels, plays, morality tales, and even poetry. Pastors in the Classics is a unique, unprecedented collection of relevant literary masterpieces in which the pastor's experience is a major part of the story. Part 1 is a reader's guide to twelve important classics written over four centuries and covering seven different nationalities. Each chapter not only describes and interprets the work in question, it also highlights a specific feature of pastoral ministry explored in the work. Part 2 is a handbook that defines the canon of literary masterpieces that deal with the pastor's experience, offering reading suggestions for both ministers and lovers of literature. From the familiar (The Canterbury Tales; Cry, the Beloved Country; and The Scarlet Letter) to the lesser-known (Silence, Witch Wood) to the surprising (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), this collection uncovers the good, the bad, and the ugly ways in which pastors have been presented to the reading public for the past half millennium.
