What I want to make plain to the reader is that when you experience bumps and obstacles in life you can overcome and still succeed. Also, I want to emphasize the process of grief and how to not succumb to depression and to fuel your life with things that may leave a legacy on your behalf and the deceased one. It doesn’t matter if you were born with nothing, and who your parents, are, nor the mistakes you made, you can overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plots of many films pivot on the moment when a dowdy girl with bad hair, ill-fitting outdated clothing, and thick glasses is changed into an almost unrecognizable glamour girl. Makeover scenes such as these are examined beginning with 1942's Now, Voyager. The study examines whether the film makeover is voluntary or involuntary, whether it is always successful, how much screen time it takes up, where in the narrative structure it falls, and how the scene is actually filmed. Films with a Pygmalion theme, such as My Fair Lady, Vertigo, and Shampoo, are examined in terms of gender relations: whether the man is content with his creation and what sort of woman is the ideal. Some films' publicity capitalizes on a glamorous star's choice to play an unattractive character, as discussed in a chapter examining stars like Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, and Cameron Diaz. Topics also include folk literature's Cinderella tale, men as the inspiration for makeovers in teen flicks films like Clueless, She's All That, and Me, Natalie, and class repositioning in such movies as Working Girl, Pretty Woman, and Grease. Photographs are presented in a before/after format, showing the change in the madeover character.

This essential guide offers a simple 5-part framework that will help you have honest and enlightening conversations despite deep and fundamental disagreements. Divisions are on the rise around the world, and 2024 may well be a peak year. We're losing the ability to disagree without dehumanizing. There is a deep need for this practical and accessible guide to having challenging conversations in any situation, from the workplace to the classroom to the dinner table. It's not about saying the right words at the right time but something vastly deeper. In this book, you'll discover the 5 pillars of respectfully disagreeing: Challenge your perspective Be the student Cultivate your curiosity Seek the gray Agree to respect But this is not a weighty tome. Each chapter features a cartoon, and Justin Jones-Fosu tackles this serious subject with a playful and compassionate tone. For example, he writes I have become more and more intentional in my desire to respectfully disagree with others (except those who think putting ketchup on eggs is wrongthere is no hope for respect there). With a wide range of examples and exercises throughout, this is a timely and reader-friendly handbook to disagreeing with someone's ideology while passionately pursuing their humanity.

Before Chloé knows it, she is wearing designer clothes and barely recognizes herself in the mirror. Chloé’s friends and family are worried, and they warn her that Amelia is a lady killer. Chloé does her best to ignore them, reasoning that her relationship with Amelia is purely professional…or is it? Is Chloé’s growing regard for Amelia something more than friendship? Book excerpt: From one of Canada's top baseball writers and radio hosts: a retrospective of the Toronto Blue Jays that comes more than 20 years after Joe Carter's World Series-winning home run. A must-have for all Blue Jays fans, and a great read for Toronto and Canadian sports fans in general. In Full Count, Jeff Blair takes us back to the days when the Toronto Blue Jays were "the Cadillac of franchises," and shows us exactly what they did right to become baseball's premier club. Then he explores the disappointing aftermath, when the league's fourth-largest market became an also-ran: seemingly destined to languish behind the big-spending Yankees and Red Sox and free-wheeling Rays--until the offseason of 2012. Full Count will appeal to the casual fans wanting to re-live Blue Jays history, and to the serious fans who relish the nitty-gritty business decisions and behind-the-scenes details that made this team what it is today.

Book excerpt: Simplicity is the new era of chic. Despite the grandeur in which Louis XIV and his descendants Louis XV and Louis XVI lived in the magnificent Château de Versailles, extravagance rarely suggests elegance these days. Befitting spaces less assumedly scaled than the vast palace, alluring, of-the-moment interiors exude a more discreet cachet. Clean, not stuffy, reflects our culture and the times. And a one-night stand ten years in the making… Astrid Anderson Bouchard, a creative free spirit, has one last item on her birthday bucket list before she starts graduate school. She’s determined to hookup with Jesse Lambert and get over her long-standing crush once and for all. No more fantasizing about the guy who saved her very clumsy teen self from public humiliation at hockey camp. No more comparing him to every man she dates. One and done, and she can move on with her life. Jesse Lambert has a plan. Sign a big contract with a new team for his remaining few seasons as a pro player, then retire back home to Beaver Bend, Minnesota. Find a nice woman, settle down, and start a family. The Tap That charity strip event weekend is his last chance to sew some wild oats, and the sexy stranger with the pink hair and the sweet laugh fits the bill. Only after a very hot night together, Jesse learns Astrid is his new boss’s one and only daughter. Which is bad. There’s only one way out of this sticky situation and it involves convincing Astrid to pretend they’re in a serious relationship so he doesn’t lose his lucrative deal with her dad. But will she give him an assist or send him straight to the penalty box? Stripped Bare A sexy single dad. A tomboy turned runway model. And the smallest apartment ever for “just friends” to share… The last single man standing, Sullivan O’Toole is determined to remain that way while raising his son. Until his apartment has smoke damage and he’s forced into a short-term rental with Edwina “Eddie” Hunt, whose nose he accidentally broke during a hockey pickup game when they were kids. Eddie is no longer a tomboy. Eddie is drop-dead gorgeous, back in Beaver Bend visiting, and the one woman who can make him change his mind about being a permanent bachelor… Except for three small problems. Eddie lives in New York City and has a thriving business there. Eddie isn’t single. Sullivan still hasn’t forgiven himself for his wife’s death four years earlier. So maybe three big problems. Yet for the first time in forever both are laughing and having fun again, and every heartfelt conversation the old friends have feels like a hefty nudge from fate. Throw in undeniable chemistry that they can’t act on and they’re left wondering what they actually want out of life. Can they listen to the signs and find a different future… together? Bonus Novella: Fake Dating Sullivan’s Dad My best friend is stubborn. And my best friend has a super hot dad. I’ve had feelings for Sullivan since he lost his wife four years ago, but he doesn’t see me that way. The plan? Fake date his dad. If he thinks Liam, who has tattoos, a beard, and the reputation of being a heck of a lover, is interested in me, maybe it will spark his own interest. Liam is totally on board— in fact, it’s his idea. The only problem is that with every fake date, I find myself falling harder and harder for the father and not the son. It’s definitely time to pivot and see what is real and has been right in front of me all along… Liam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Norman Lear remade the BBC series Till Death Us Do Part into All in the Family, American remakes of British television shows have become part of the American cultural fabric. Indeed, some of the programs currently said to exemplify American tastes and attitudes, from reality programs like American Idol and What Not to Wear to the mock-documentary approach of The Office, are adaptations of successful British shows. Carlen Lavigne and Heather Marcovitch's American Remakes of British Television: Transformations and Mistranslations is a multidisciplinary collection of essays that focuses on questions raised when a foreign show is adapted for the American market. What does it mean to remake a television program? What does the process of 'Americanization' entail? What might the success or failure of a remade series tell us about the differences between American and British producers and audiences? This volume examines British-to-American television remakes from 1971 to the present. The American remakes in this volume do not share a common genre, format, or even level of critical or popular acclaim. What these programs do have in common, however, is the sense that something in the original has been significantly changed in order to make the program appealing or accessible to American audiences. The contributors display a multitude of perspectives in their essays. British-to-American television remakes as a whole are explained in terms of the market forces and international trade that make these productions financially desirable. Sanford and Son is examined in terms of race and class issues. Essays on Life on Mars and Doctor Who stress television's role in shaping collective cultural memories. An essay on Queer as Folk explores the romance genre and also talks about differences in national sexual politics. An examination of The Office discusses how the American remake actually endorses the bureaucracy that the British original satirizes; alternatively, another approach breaks down The Office's bumbling boss figures in terms of contemporary psychological theory. An essay on What Not to Wear discusses how a reality show about everyday fashion conceals the construction of an ideal national subject; a second essay explains the show in terms of each country's discourses surrounding femininity. The success of American Idol is explained by analyzing the role of amateur music in American culture. The issue of translation itself is interrogated by examining specific episodes of Cracker, and also by asking why a successful series in the U.K., Blackpool, was a dismal failure as an American remake. This collection provides a rich and multifaceted overview of approaches to international television studies.
